Yotam Ottolenghi visits Crete
Channel 4 (More4), the TV station in the UK, presents the series "Ottolenghi's Mediterranean Island Feast". In this episode (first broadcast 21 November 2013) Yotam Ottolenghi visits Crete and explores its rich and complex culinary history. In the ancient capital of Heraklion, Yotam makes a variation of the Cretan meze dakos, a marriage of tomatoes, crumbled feta, olives and oregano. In the fishing port of Agios Nikolaos, he marries octopus marinaded in wine with tender baby squid, stuffed with tomatoes and okra. On a trip inland, Yotam uses feta for a cheesecake with a ripe cherry compote. He also prepares a feast of spit-roasted pork souvlaki, served with his twist on tzatziki. Crete is the largest Island in Greece. Crete is also one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. Car hire is a great way to explore Crete. The mostly photographed beach in Crete is Balos Lagoon. There are two ways to get to Balos: "hard" by car and "easy" by cruise ferry. To see Balos at it's full beauty you should go by car. Good idea is to arrive at Balos not later than 11 o'clock before large ship called "Gramvoussa" arrive from Kissamos. It is a time when Balos beach gets overcrowded. I know what I write because I ' ve been 3 times on Balos by car :) The next paradise beach on Crete is Elafonisi. It looks like Caribbean Lagoon. In many places the sand has pink color, because of millions of crushed shells. Very nice beaches at the West part of Crete are also: Stavros (Greek Zorba beach), Falasarna and Stefanou beach with picturesque view from top. If you like adventure, you can follow the European hiking footpath E4, which connects Chora Sfakion and Loutro. You will view breathtaking sceneries over the Libyan Sea and rest in magic Loutro. Time seems to stop here. If you haven't visited Crete yet, it is a time to come and discover this beautiful Island.- published: 23 Sep 2013
