Gaziantep is famous for its regional specialities: Copper-ware and "Yemeni" sandals, specific to the region, are two examples. The city is an economic center for Southeastern and Eastern Turkey. The number of large industrial businesses established in Gaziantep comprise four percent of Turkish industry in general, while small industries comprise six percent. Also, Gaziantep has the largest organized industrial area in Turkey and holds first position in exports and imports. The city is centre of the Green olive oil- based Nizip Soap industry. Traditionally, commerce in Gaziantep was centre in covered markets known as 'Bedesten' or 'Hans', the best known of which are the Zincirli Bedesten, Hüseyin Pasha Bedesten and Kemikli Bedesten. Gaziantep also has a developing tourist industry. Development around the base of the castle upgrades the beauty and accessibility to the castle and to the surrounding copper workshops. New restaurants and tourist friendly businesses are moving into the area. In comparison with some other regions of Turkey, tourists are still a novelty in Gaziantep and the locals make them very welcome. Many students studying the English language are willing to be guides for tourists. Gaziantep is one of the leading producers of machined carpets in the world. It exported approximately $700 million USD of machine-made carpets in 2006. There are over 100 carpet facilities in the Gaziantep Organized Industrial Zone. With its extensive olive groves, vineyards, and pistachio orchards, Gaziantep is one of the important agricultural and industrial centres of Turkey. Gaziantep is the center of pistachio cultivation in Turkey, producing 60,000 MT in 2007, and lends its name to the Turkish word for pistachio, Antep fıstığı, meaning "Antep nut". In 2009, the largest enclosed shopping center in the city and region, Sanko Park, opened, and began drawing a significant number of shoppers from Syria

Gaziantep'te meydana gelen zincirleme trafik kazasında 9 kişi yaralandı. Alınan bilgiye göre, Fatih Kaya yönetimindeki 27 R 7852 plakalı kamyonet, Sani Konukoğlu Bulvarı'nda, aynı istikamette seyreden Mustafa Diken'in kullandığı 27 P 6708 plakalı kamyonetle çarpıştı. Mustafa Kılıç idaresindeki 27 TF 859 plakalı motosiklet de kaza yapan araçlara çarpıp devrildi. Kazada, sürücüler ile kamyonetlerde bulunan Leyla Diken, Arda Diken, Filiz Hayta, Zeynep Hayta, Sıla Hayta ve İbrahim Halil Biber yaralandı. İlk müdahaleleri olay yerinde yapılan yaralılar, ambulanslarla çeşitli hastanelere kaldırıldı. Gaziantep Emniyet Müdürlüğü Kaçakçılık ve Organize Suçlarla Mücadele Şube ekipleri tarafından uyuşturucu tacirlerine büyük darbe vuruldu. Uyuşturucu ticaretine geçit vermeyen Emniyet ekipleri, Türkiye tarihinde Diyarbakır'dan sonra en büyük ikinci operasyonu gerçekleştirdi. Kaçakçılık ekiplerinin Diyarbakır'da gerçekleştirdiği başarılı operasyondan sonra ellerindeki uyuşturucuları piyasaya sürmek isteyen uyuşturucu tacirleri yakayı ele verdi. Gelen bir ihbar üzerine harekete geçen Kaçakçılık ve Organize Suçlarla Mücadele Şube ekipleri, Diyarbakır'dan hareket eden 72 AP 986 plakalı bir akaryakıt tankerinin içerisinde esrar olduğu bilgisini aldı. Otoban Doğu gişelerinde durdurulan tankerde, narkotik dedektör köpekleri Şile ve Zoro'nun da katıldığı aramada, tanker içinde balyalanmış şekilde piyasaya sürülmeye hazır 1 buçuk ton uyuşturucu madde ele geçirildi. Son aylarda Diyarbakır'da yapılan operasyonların ardından uyuşturucu tacirlerinin yurdun dört bir yanına sevkiyat başlattıkları ve ellerindeki malları bir önce piyasa sürmek istedikleri ortaya çıktı. Operasyonun ´Cumhuriyet tarihinin en büyük ikinci uyuşturucu operasyonu olduğu ve piyasa değerinin 5 milyon lira olduğu ifade edildi. Bu yakalamayla birlikte 2013 yılında Türkiye genelinde yakalanan uyuşturucu madde miktarı da bir önceki yıla göre yüzde 126 artışla 98 tona çıktı. Öte yandan detaylı arama ve tarama yapmak üzere tanker içine giren narkotik polislerine uyuşturucu maddeden etkilenmemeleri için süt içirildi. İl Emniyet Müdürü Ömer Aydın yaptığı açıklamada, "Uyuşturucu ve uyuşturucu tacirleri ile mücadele görevini gece gündüz demeden, fedakârca yerine getiren ve Türkiye genelinde bugüne kadarki en fazla ikinci büyük esrar sevkiyatını sokağa inmeden yakalayarak bu başarılı operasyona imza atan Narkotik polislerine teşekkür eder, başarılarının devamını dilerim. Suç ve suçlular ile kararlı mücadelemiz, Gaziantep halkından aldığımız destek ile artarak devam etmektedir." dedi. Olayla ilgili gözaltına alınan Fikret P., Halil A., Osman C., Murat T., Mehmet Ş.T. ve Mehmet T. emniyetteki sorgularının ardından adliyeye sevk edildi.

Gaziantep Bakırcılar çarşısı The Coppersmith Bazaar of Gaziantep While the West of Turkey makes every effort to keep up to date with international trends and practices, the same cannot be said of the south east. Now this is not necessary a bad thing because in the big and bustling city of Gaziantep, selected areas dedicate themselves to traditional trades. The local bazaar is one of them and it was the first time I saw a coppersmith at work. Called the Gaziantep Bakircilar çarsisi in Turkish, the cobbled paths were lined on both sides with coppersmith shops. Compared to the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul, it was very small but the skylights in the ceiling allowed natural sunlight to shine through. Coppersmiths were cleaning, engraving or selling their stock. They took no notice of me, sensing instantly that I was a tourist with a camera, and not copper possessions that needed cleaning. Attention was instead paid to the main bulk of their customers who seemed to be housewives and probably repeat business for them. Hassle was nonexistent, even if I stopped to browse and this rather surprised me. I cannot ever remember being in a Turkish bazaar when shop keepers did not shout slogans to attract customers. The bazaar is part of an improvement project by the local council. The trade of coppersmiths in Gaziantep stretches back 500 years and is passed from father to son. Perhaps sensing that modern technology has destroyed this trade in other areas, they are making an effort to keep it alive. The bazaar is part of the official Culture Route of Gaziantep, and all 280 shops participate in it. I am certain that the coppersmith trade of Gaziantep will not exist in 100 years' time but there is a small part of me that secretly hopes I am proven wrong.Text Natalie Sayin

Antiquity The history of Gaziantep goes back to the Hittites.[citation needed] Gaziantep was ruled by Akkadians, Mitannis, Hittites, Neo-Hittites, Assyrians, Urartians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, Parthians, Commagene, Romans, Byzantines, Sassanids, and Arabs. Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine[edit] Gaziantep is the probable site of the Hellenistic city of Antiochia ad Taurum ("Antiochia in the Taurus Mountains"). The ruins of the ancient city of Doliche (modern Turkish: Dülük) lie a few kilometers to the north of the city center. In the center of the city stands the Gaziantep Fortress and the Ravanda citadel, which were restored by the Byzantines in the 6th century. Muslim conquest[edit] In the first half of the 7th century, Arab armies of the Muslim Caliphate captured this region. It was passed to the Umayyads in 661 and the Abbasids in 750. During the period of Arab rule, it was ravaged several times by the Byzantines. After the disintegration of the Abbasid dynasty, the city was ruled successively by the Tulunids, the Ikhshidids and the Hamdanids. In 962, it was recaptured by the Byzantines (Eastern Romans). Seljuk conquest[edit] The Anatolian Seljukss took Aintab in 1067. They gave way to the Syrian Seljuks in 1086. Tutush I appointed Thoros of Edessa as governor of the region. It was captured by the Crusaders and united to the Maras Seigneurship in the County of Edessa in 1098. It reverted to the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm in 1150, controlled by the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia between 1155--1157 and 1204--1206 and captured by the Zengids in 1172 and the Ayyubids in 1181. It was retaken by Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm in 1218. It was ruled by the Ilkhanate between 1260--1261, 1271--1272, 1280--1281 and 1299--1317 and by the Mamluks between 1261--1271, 1272--1280, 1281--1299, 1317--1341, 1353--1378, 1381--1389 and 1395-1516. It was also governed by the Dulkadirids, which was a Turkish vassal state of the Mamluks. Ottoman Period[edit] The Ottoman Empire captured Gaziantep after the Battle of Marj Dabiq in 1516, under the reign of Sultan Selim I. In the Ottoman period, Aintab was a sanjak centered initially in the Dulkadir Eyalet (1516-1818), and later in the Aleppo vilayet (1908--1918). It was also a kaza in the Aleppo vilayet (1818--1908). The city established itself as a centre for commerce due to its location straddling trade routes. The 17th century Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi noted that there were 3900 shops and 2 bedesten. By the end of the 19th century, Aintab had a population of about 45,000, 2/3 of which was Muslim, largely Yörük ("Turkmen") of the Çapanoğlu clan, but also Arabs and Kurds. Of the Christians, there was a large Armenian community. In the 19th century, there was considerable American Protestant Christian missionary activity in Aintab.[5][6] In particular, Central Turkey College was founded in 1874 by the American Mission Board and largely served the Armenian community. The Gregorian Armenians suffered from the massacres of 1895, but the Armenian Protestants thrived, drawn by Central Turkey College.[7] Central Turkey College was transferred to Aleppo in 1916. Republic of Turkey[edit] The Martyrs' monument commemorates the defense of the city and its hero Şahin Bey. Gaziantep was only a small city at the start of the republican period. However, it quickly became a regional hub and industry grew rapidly in the second half of the 20th century. At the entrance to the president's palace, the changing of the guards ceremony is a popular attraction. Dressed in red-white parade uniforms with lace jackets and feathered hats that date back to the nineteenth century, the soldiers goose-step a pre-determined route. The transformation of Sofia into a lively, cosmopolitan capital has succeeded well with history and tradition still very much in evidence.
