In this public lecture, the panelist look at the contours of the China-India bilateral relationship in the context of new global challenges. These challenges include climate change mitigation, global terrorism in the aftermath of the rise of ISIS (Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant), and the South China Sea conflict. The global financial sector is also set to undergo a sea change. China and India are actively working together in establishing a new financial institution that would cater to developing countries -- the New Development Bank. China's Road and Belt Initiative may also change the trajectory of regional cooperation and trade within South and Southeast Asia.
This public session is part of the 5th Regional Security roundtable. Held at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the Roundtable brings together eminent scholars and policymakers from China and India to discuss the challenges and avenues of cooperation within the China-India bilateral relationship.

Kishore Mahbubani (born in 1948) currently serves as the Dean and Professor in the Practice of Public Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. His book The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Global Power to the East led to intense international discussions, as to whether it is time to acknowledge a fundamental shift in the balance of economic and political power from west to east.
Prior to his academic career, Kishore Mahbubani was with the Singapore Foreign Service from 1971 to 2004. During these years, he held positions in Cambodia, Malaysia, Washington D.C. and New York and served two terms as the Ambassador of Singapore to the United Nations. Kishore Mahbubani received a Master in philosophy from the Dalhousie University, Canada.

Kishore Mahbubani (born October 24, 1948, Singapore) is a notable academic and former Singaporean diplomat. He is currently Professor in the Practice of Public Policy and Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. From 1971 to 2004 he served in the Singaporean Foreign Services, ending up as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In that role he served as President of the United Nations Security Council in January 2001 and May 2002.
His earlier postings included Cambodia (where he served during the war in 1973-74), Malaysia and Washington, DC, and he was Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry from 1993 to 1998. He continues to serve in Boards and Councils of several institutions in Singapore, Europe and North America, including the Yale President's Council on International Activities (PCIA), Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, Indian Prime Minister’s Global Advisory Council, University of Bocconi International Advisory Committee, World Economic Forum - Global Agenda Council on China and Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Nominating Committee.

In this public lecture, the panelist look at the contours of the China-India bilateral relationship in the context of new global challenges. These challenges include climate change mitigation, global terrorism in the aftermath of the rise of ISIS (Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant), and the South China Sea conflict. The global financial sector is also set to undergo a sea change. China and India are actively working together in establishing a new financial institution that would cater to developing countries -- the New Development Bank. China's Road and Belt Initiative may also change the trajectory of regional cooperation and trade within South and Southeast Asia.
This public session is part of the 5th Regional Security roundtable. Held at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the Roundtable brings together eminent scholars and policymakers from China and India to discuss the challenges and avenues of cooperation within the China-India bilateral relationship.
The panelist consists of Prof Kishore Mahbubani, Ambassador Jayant Prasad, and Major-Gen Dr Yao Yunzhu.

His book The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Global Power to the East led to intense international discussions, as to whether it is time to acknowledge a fundamental shift in the balance of economic and political power from west to east.
Prior to his academic career, Kishore Mahbubani was with the Singapore Foreign Service from 1971 to 2004. During these years, he held positions in Cambodia, Malaysia, Washington D.C. and New York and served two terms as the Ambassador of Singapore to the United Nations. Kishore Mahbubani received a Master in philosophy from the Dalhousie University, Canada.
