The dark fantasy world of Dark Souls is rich with intriguing lore and atmosphere, if you can make it past the unique take on controls and take a special interest in learning the game and its mechanics you will enjoy the challenges and world that awaits you. Otherwise you will fall into stupor of rage and frustration. Dark Souls: Dark Souls is like that date that went decently well, maybe you said some dumb things but, you felt pretty good about the date overall. Then the date ignores you outright and, never returns your calls. Do you stop pursuing altogether or, make a more concentrated effort and maybe change up your game to try and score another date, maybe, a better one. Dark Souls is the game series that is infamous for its unforgiving gameplay and dark setting with the main point being you dying over, and over, and over. A refreshing take on the action roleplaying formula, dark souls is a unique mix of role-playing, exploration and anger management. Told next to nothing about practically anything, you are dropped in the world of dark souls, given a brief tutorial on the controls and expected to march forth and succeed. There is something to be said for gameplay over story and Dark Souls definitely capitalizes on the gameplay and mechanic aspect and fails badly at the story aspect. Dark Souls' combat mechanics is simple to grasp but has a hidden layer of depth and strategy that you learn all on your own. Combining magic, different armors, weapons and so forth you will easily come up with a variety of different builds of characters that all are fully capable of succeeding in the world of Dark Souls. Gameplay and the combat mechanics as well as a superb level design makes learning Dark Souls the challenge it has been cracked up to be but, one that is fair and rewarding. The lore and atmosphere is also worth noting and it makes exploring this world a treat and getting further into the game very rewarding. The main games fault is its vagueness; Instead of igniting mystery and intrigue it often leaves you with more questions to ask than answer and when the game fails to mention basic game mechanics (such as jumping) there is something to be said for being a challenge and just flat out not telling you anything. Unfortunately, a lot can be gleaned it great detail from the awesome wiki sites, however, video games shouldn't rely on the fan wikis to tell you critical information. Overall, Dark Souls is a challenge, one I find to be harsh at times but, fair and always part of the overall experience. The PC port is pretty awful, don't buy the game without having a controller on hand to use or you will suffer the wrath of terrible key binding, limited video and audio options and much more. Also the vagueness of basic game mechanics as well as background and story can also lead to frustration and can be hard to find reason to continue on when you are unsure of why you are even there in the first place. However, if you are remotely intrigued by Dark Souls and are up for a challenge then it is easily worth the $20.00 USD.
