Iris Chang (10-28-68 -- 11-09 04 RIP), - Air date: 05-12-03
Iris Chang, the prominent Chinese American author and journalist who fueled an international protest movement against Japan with her incendiary best-selling book, "The Rape of Nanking," was found dead from an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said Wednesday......Author of three books and many articles and columns, Chang's most famous work was her controversial 1997 book, "The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II," which described one of the war's worst atrocities.
Japanese army troops massacred many Chinese in Nanjing (then called Nanking) in late 1937 and early 1938, and Chang not only believed that the horrible event was in danger of being forgotten but also accused Japanese society of collective denial about it. Translated into many languages, her book galvanized a redress movement in the United States. It was lauded in the U.S. media, drew criticism from several U.S. scholars on Japan and was vilified by right-wing publications in Japan. ......Chang's most recent book, "The Chinese in America," was named one of the best books of the year by The Chronicle. Her first book, "Thread of the Silkworm," told the story of the Chinese scientist who guided the development of China's Silkworm missile. Born in Princeton, N.J., Chang grew up in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., where her parents are professors at the University of Illinois. Her grandparents' escape from Nanjing fed her early interest in what happened there. She received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois and worked briefly as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and Associated Press before entering a master's program at Johns Hopkins University in 1990. She appeared on the cover of Reader's Digest as well as on many TV programs, including "Nightline" and "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," and she wrote for numerous publications, including the New York Times and Newsweek.

Iris Chang - Nanking Massacre by Japanese in World War II (張純如 - 南京大屠殺)
The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II is a bestselling 1997 non-fiction book written by Iris Chang about the 1937--1938 Nanking Massacre, the massacre and atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army after it captured Nanjing, then capital of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It describes the events leading up to the Nanking Massacre and the atrocities that were committed. The book presents the view that the Japanese government has not done enough to redress the atrocities.

A song for Iris - Iris Chang theme song《张纯如》主题曲
theme song for Iris Chang, the movie
Just a little child
They took it all away
Your blood, your life
Your trust, your faith
You died, reborn in pain
Red as the river;
Looming large, the gate.
Darkness in your heart, drowning in hate.
I'll dedicate my life to get your stories told
I'll give voice to the voiceless
(Silenced for too long)
Crying out for justice
(Silenced for too long)
Trust me with your pain
I'll take it as my own
I'll fight to get the truth told
My weapon is my word
One more time, remember.
The horror, the pain
They raped you of your pride
Robbed you of your dignity
Speak of how they stole your peace
Screaming to cease
I'll give voice to the voiceless
(Silenced for too long)
Crying out for justice
(Silenced for too long)
Trust me with your pain
I'll take it as my own
I'll fight to get the truth told
My weapon is my word
It's done. The page's filled
With blood and tears
Not in vain
The world will finally hear
I gave voice to the voiceless
Now I'm silencing my own
What I've left behind, remember
In you, my spirit lives on
Find my light
Pass it on
Find my light
Pass it on

Vancouver remembers Iris Chang
Dear Friends,
I am very happy to report that the book launch of THE WOMAN WHO COULD NOT FORGET -- IRIS CHANG BEFORE AND BEYOND THE RPAE OF NANKING written by Iris Chang's mother, Dr. Ying-Ying Chang in the Vancouver Lower Mainland in BC went well beyond our expectation and it was a great success. You may like to see the photos of Ying Ying's book launch in Vancouver from
http://picasaweb.google.com/105584159483663850059/DrYingYingChangSBookLaunchInVancouver#.
Ying-Ying and Shau-Jin left Vancouver this morning in good spirit. They are returning to San Jose for a well-deserved rest after a 17-day book tour in North America. They worked extremely hard to modify the presentation for each audience. Their hard work paid off. Both of them feel encouraged by the warm reception and well wishes from people of all walks.
Yesterday (June 5) Vancouver was finally graced with gorgeous summer weather; our first summer weekend and people were out enjoying the sun and barbecues. Ying-Ying's last public event was held inside the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library downtown. We didn't know what to expect and the experienced library staff said 200 chairs would be more than enough. 15 minutes before the presentation, we had around 60 people seated. By the time I began the introduction promptly at 2pm, all the chairs were taken and the library staff brought out another 50 chairs...and then another 50 until the room's full seating capacity was reached. Late comers had to stand in the back and along the sides of the room. There were at least 350 people in attendance.
Everyone in the room quietly listened to Ying-Ying's amazing speech. It was her best presentation in my opinion. I think it could be because she heard from my introduction that Iris's first Vancouver public speech was held in the very same room 14 years ago when she began to promote her best seller, The Rape of Nanking. It was an emotional experience for all of us. The quality of questions from the audience which made up people from all ages and ethnicities was very high and provocative. We video documented the whole proceeding and we hope to share the excerpts with you as soon as possible.
The screening of Iris Chang - The Rape of Nanking documentary that followed immediately after the speech was introduced by Olivia Cheng, Ying-Ying and Shau-Jin. 250 people were there to watch it.
I received an email from a staffer of the Richmond Public Library stating that on Friday, June 3, Ying-Ying's Mandarin speaking presentation attracted 170 people in attendance - 100 more than we had anticipated. The library set up 70 chairs at first and we waited nervously for people to come. After all, it was a Friday night with beautiful weather and it seemed like the entire city was in a blissful spirit as a result of Canucks' first Stanley Cup playoff victory over Bruins on previous night. Then the room started to fill up and the library staff kept adding more chairs. Ying-Ying delivered a passionate and eloquent speech. The audience responded with gratitude for the work that Iris did for preserving historical truth and justice and everyone was hugely supportive of Ying-Ying's book. Ying-Ying and Shau-Jin were pleased with the turnout and book sales.
As for Ying-Ying's dialogue with youth, about 150 students from North Delta Secondary School and over 100 students from Vancouver Technical Secondary School that were interested in WWII history in Asia Pacific attended her presentation. The high school students showed deep respect for Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking, listened attentively when Ying-Ying talked about the genesis of The Rape of Nanking, Iris's struggle to become a respected writer and a defender of social justice and most importantly, Iris's message of "The Power of One". It was a worthwhile and positive experience for both Ying-Ying and the students.
Without any doubts, beautiful memories of Iris will remain with us who got to know her one way or other. But Ying-Ying's memoir about her daughter will ensure that Iris Chang will be known and missed by generations to come.
Someone attended the book reading at the Vancouver Public Library and wrote an article entitled "Iris Chang A Writer We Should Not Forget" on Asia Sentinel, an independent news and analysis about Asia's politics, economics, culture and more. http://www.asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task;=view&id;=3239&Itemid;=352
Last but not least, I am most grateful for all the enthusiastic and generous support of our volunteers, sponsors and the media without which the book launch events in Vancouver would not be possible.

The video is the abstract of Prof. Ying Ying Chang's speech at the book launch of "The Woman Who Could Not Forget - Iris Chang Before and Beyond The Rape of Nanking" at Vancouver Public Library on June 5, 2011.
"The Woman Who Could Not Forget - Iris Chang Before and Beyond The Rape of Nanking", a moving, illuminating memoir about the life of world-famous author and historian, Iris Chang, as told by her mother Prof. Ying Ying Chang. http://yy.irischang.net/news/index.php
This book won the 2011 Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) best book in adult non-fiction category as well as the the 2011-2012 APALA (Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association) book award in adult non-fiction category.
"In this brave memoir you will share in the celebration of a life, allowing us to experience
her presence again. Full of courage and conviction, full of life." -- Richard Rhodes
Iris Chang's best-selling book The Rape of Nanking forever changed the way we view the Second World War in Asia. It all began with a photo of a river choked with the bodies of hundreds of Chinese civilians that shook Iris to her core. Who were these people? Why had this happened and how could their story have been lost to history? She could not shake that image from her head. She could not forget what she had seen.
A few short years later, Chang revealed this "second Holocaust" to the world. The Japanese atrocities against the people of Nanking were so extreme that a Nazi party leader based in China actually petitioned Hitler to ask the Japanese government to stop the massacre. But who was this woman that single-handedly swept away years of silence, secrecy and shame?
Her mother, Ying-Ying, provides an enlightened and nuanced look at her daughter, from Iris' home-made childhood newspaper, to her early years as a journalist and later, as a promising young historian, her struggles with her son's autism and her tragic suicide. The Woman Who Could Not Forget cements Iris' legacy as one of the most extraordinary minds of her generation and reveals the depth and beauty of the bond between a mother and daughter. 24 pages of black-and-white photographs.
Ying-Ying Chang (Author) is the mother of Iris Chang. She has a PhD from Harvard in biochemistry and was a research associate professor of microbiology at University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with her husband, Shau-Jin, a physics professor. She lives in San Jose, California and is on the board of the Iris Chang Memorial Fund.
