Queen Victoria (1819-1901) - A Life in Images and on Film
At the end of the C19 and the beginning of the C20, film was a new emerging technology and, for some reason or other, I'm totally fascinated by those historical figures who just managed to be captured by the new medium -- people of whom we would have no moving record had the innovation developed just a short time later. For me, the sensation is of time travel -- as though I have jumped into a tardis or time machine, keyed in a figure of interest and a date, and then journeyed back over the decades. I want to do a series of videos of people of historical interest who were just captured on film and or audio -- people you may not realise were recoded in these new technologies. I hope this venture interests some others of you as much as it does me! The first in this series is a compilation of some of the film that exists of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Prior to each clip, I've added stills from the footage to locate the queen (circled) -- often the quality of the images is such that it's easy to miss the subject! The first four clips were shot during the celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The fifth clip was shot during the Queen's visit to Dublin in 1900, and shows her carriage stopping for the British monarch to receive a large bouquet of flowers from a young girl. The sixth clip shows Queen Victoria arriving by carriage at a garden party in 1898. She is accompanied by the Princess of Wales, later Queen Mary. The seventh clip again shows the queen in a carriage during a Diamond Jubilee occasion. In the eighth clip, the queen is seen in a carriage, visiting Sheffield in 1897. She looks least like herself in this footage -- an impostor perhaps? The ninth clip was shot at Balmoral in 1896 and the queen is outdoors being led in a carriage by a kilt clad gentleman, with members of her family, English and Indian courtiers and attendants ... and her dog present. The tenth clip shows the funeral procession and cortege of Queen Victoria in 1901, with the mourners including King Edward VII and Kaiser Wilhelm II. The music I've used to accompany this video is from Edward Elgar's 'Enigma Variations' (No. 9-12). Enjoy!- published: 15 Sep 2013

Building dedicated to Queen Victoria in Kolkata - Victoria Memorial
Tourist takes a walk inside the premises of Victoria Memorial where they are witnessing the European style architecture of the marble building of the Memorial dedicated to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The Victoria Memorial (Victoria Memorial Hall) is a large marble building in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819--1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The Memorial lies on the Maidan (grounds) by the bank of the Hooghly river, near Jawaharlal Nehru road. In January 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria, George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston and Viceroy of India, suggested the creation of a fitting memorial. He proposed the construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens. Curzon said, "Let us, therefore, have a building, stately, spacious, monumental and grand, to which every newcomer in Calcutta will turn, to which all the resident population, European and Native, will flock, where all classes will learn the lessons of history, and see revived before their eyes the marvels of the past." The Prince of Wales, later King George V, laid the foundation stone on 4 January 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921. In 1912, before the Victoria Memorial was finished, King George V announced the transfer of the capital of India from Calcutta to New Delhi. Thus, the Victoria Memorial was built in what would be a provincial city rather than a capital. The Victoria Memorial's architect was William Emerson (1843--1924), president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The design is in the Indo-Saracenic revivalist style. This style uses a mixture of British and Mughal elements as well as Venetian, Egyptian, Deccani and Islamic architectural influences. The building is 338 feet (103 m) by 228 feet (69 m) and rises to a height of 184 feet (56 m). It is constructed of white Makrana marble. The gardens of the Victoria Memorial were designed by Lord Redesdale and David Prain. Emerson's assistant, Vincent J. Esch designed the bridge of the north aspect and the garden gates. The construction of the Victoria Memorial was delayed by Curzon's departure from India in 1905 with a subsequent loss of local enthusiasm for the project and by the need for testing of the foundations. The Victoria Memorial's foundation stone was set in 1906 and the building opened in 1921. The work of construction was entrusted to Messrs. Martin & Co. of Calcutta. Work on the superstructure began in 1910. After 1947, when India gained independence, additions were made.
