Libya petrol depot smoke cloud hangs over Tripoli
A fire at the oil depot for the airport in Libya's capital rages out of control after being struck in the crossfire of warring militias battling for control of the airfield. Libya's interim government said in a statement that the fire could trigger a "humanitarian and environmental disaster" in Tripoli, appealing for "international help" to extinguish the inferno. It did not say what it specifically needed. The blaze had spread to a second depot by Monday afternoon, the government said. It was unclear if there were any injuries from the fire. "The government appeals to all concerned parties to immediately stop firing as the situation has become very grave," the government said. Libyan television stations called on residents to evacuate areas within a 3-mile radius of the airport. Many Libyan families scrambled to leave. Black smoke billowed over the Tripoli skyline. Mohammed al-Harari, the spokesman for the Libyan National Oil Company, said the oil depot had a capacity of 1.6 million gallons and that if the fire was not brought under control, it could ignite liquid gas nearby. Fire trucks from several nearby cities and towns have been deployed to help extinguish the blaze, said a Libyan security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to journalists. The battle for control of the airport began two weeks ago when Islamist-led militias - mostly from the western city of Misrata - launched a surprise assault on the airport, which has been under control of a rival militia from the western mountain town of Zintan. It wasn't clear whose fire started the oil depot blaze. The Health Ministry said Sunday that the fighting has so far killed 79 people and wounded more than 400. Lebanon: Syrian Conflict Increases Tensions in Tripoli
The conflict in neighboring Syria has severely aggravated existing sectarian tensions in Tripoli, where intermittent violence has persisted between the hilltop Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and the Sunni neighborhoods that completely surround it, including Bab al-Tabbaneh, since May 2008. Hundreds of both Sunni and Alawite residents have been the main victims, but Jabal Mohsen residents are especially vulnerable.- published: 20 Dec 2013

Tripoli Travel Video Guide
Tripoli is the capital of the desert state of Libya. The old town is known as the Medina and with its narrow lanes and squat buildings it is a combination of Arabian, North African and Mediterranean cultures. The joie de vivre of the local people is obvious where music and dance are part of their daily life. In antiquity, the city was called Oea. It was one of the three cities of Tripolitania and in Roman times, this section of the coast contained the trading towns of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Since 1963, Tripoli has been the capital of the Great Socialist Libyan-Arab People's Republic. The old town contains a souk that was almost fully abandoned following the Great Revolution as private trading was then forbidden. But when the law was abolished in 1988, it once again sprang to life. Modern Tripoli is undergoing constant development. Contemporary architecture is everywhere with skyscrapers that contain offices and apartments that have been built on the periphery of the city. Around 70 kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast, are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the 2nd century A.D. Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilization located on the edge of the Sahara.- published: 17 Mar 2014
