This is any easy one. When your pool filter system turns off the tabs keeps dissolving. This develops a pocket of highly acidic water. When the system turns back on this acidic water goes straight into the filter system and within a short while can compromise the internal parts. Cartridge and DE filters can become brittle. This can wear them down faster and possibly allow dirt to return back into the pool. Acid will also eat away at the O-rings and gaskets. You can use your chlorine tab feeder, or better yet, get a tab float. They come in all different shapes such as frogs, birds, etc... They're only about $10 and can last 7 - 10 years. If it cracks or breaks simply get another one.- published: 10 Feb 2014

A professional water test will guide you through the exact steps and quantities needed to give you a perfectly balanced pool. Chlorinating Granules act as a sanitizing agent for your pool. They kill bacteria and other organic contaminants to keep water safe, healthy and clean. Proper chlorine levels also prevent the growth and spread of algae. Fill a bucket half full of warm pool water. Add "chlor gran" as directed by your IPG water test results. Stir the mixture with a wooden stick. Then, walking along the perimeter of the pool, pour your mixed solution into the water. Let the pool circulate for two hours before swimming. This gives the chlorine time to disperse. First is to allow it to come down naturally. This is the best and most economical method. If you're going to have a large pool party, shock the pool at least 5 - 7 days prior to the event. This will allow enough time for the chlorine to come down to a safe level. The 2nd way to reduce the chlorine level is to do a partial drain and refill. This will decrease the chlorine level quickly but may also mess with your other chemical readings because you're adding new fill water to the pool. The final way, for the most extreme circumstances, is a product called Thiosulfate. This is a chlorine neutralizer and the product I used for the YMCA pool. It works well but adding it incorrectly can not only mess up the chlorine but your other chemical readings as well.- published: 11 Jan 2014
