CNN, FOX & MSNBC losing viewers left and right
While cable news' attempt to exploit missing planes to gain viewers may increase ratings in the short term, the Pew Research Center's "State of the Media" report doesn't paint a rosy picture of the health of the industry overall. CNN, FOX and MSNBC have been suffering declining primetime viewership as more consumers turning to online sources for news, while newspapers are shedding jobs in order to stay in the black. With questionable practices by cable news networks becoming more prevalent, does the industry stand a chance against online media? RT's Marina Portnaya offers analysis and a critique of the industry with Lindsay France. Jesse Ventura slams plans for new US intervention in Iraq
Insurgents with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria continue their offensive in Iraq, capturing more cities and inching closer to Baghdad. The militants also reportedly massacred 1,700 Iraqi security forces over the weekend, posting pictures online of a mass execution in Tikrit. RT's Ameera David discusses the implications and politics of this latest violence with former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura. RT America Gun Debate: What's the root cause of US violence?
A year after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. RT America hosts a rational, fact-based debate on guns and their role in American society. Moderator Abby Martin hosts a panel discussion with investigative journalist Ben Swann; Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence; Richard Feldman, president of Independent Firearms Owners Association; and 2012 Green Party presidential Candidate Jill Stein. In this first part of the debate, Martin asks the guests about the root cause of violence in America, whether guns make us safer and if the problem in this country is really with guns or if it's with their owners. Proposed bill would curb militarization of US police
Proposed bill would curb militarization of US police
The Pentagon's 1033 program, which "provides or transfers surplus Department of Defense military equipment to state and local civilian law enforcement agencies without charge," needs a major overhaul to prevent the further militarization of American police departments, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) argues in a new USA Today op-ed. The program currently allows small-town police departments, like that in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., to receive Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected vehicles (or MRAPs), assault weapons, drones and other military-grade equipment - that they may never use - for free, instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for them. And then those small towns can turn around and sell that equipment online. RT's Gayane Chichakyan discusses the militarization of US police with Michael Shank from the Friends Committee on National Legislation, who co-wrote the Johnson op-ed. NSA can spy on 98 percent of the world
Despite President Obama's January speech limiting the scope of National Security Agency surveillance, a new Washington Post article outlines a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court could turn that notion on its head. The ruling allows the NSA to conduct surveillance on 193 countries around the world. Only four countries in the world are excluded from the ruling: Canada, Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand. RT Correspondent Meghan Lopez walks us through the latest revelations. RT America's Liz Wahl resigns live on air
Ms. Wahl's resignation comes on the heels of her colleague Abby Martin's recent comments in which she voiced her disagreement with certain policies of the Russian government and asserted her editorial independence. The difference is, Ms. Martin spoke in the context of her own talk show, to the viewers who have been tuning in for years to hear her opinions on current events, the opinions that most media did not care about until two days ago. For years Ms. Martin has been speaking out against US military intervention only to be ignored by the mainstream news outlets -- but with that one comment, branded as an act of defiance, she became an overnight sensation. It is a tempting example to follow. When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional. But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt. We wish Liz the best of luck on her chosen path. SHOCKER: Americans don't trust news media
Americans trust news media less than ever, according to a new poll by Gallup. Confidence in newspapers is less than half of its 1979 peak of 51 percent, while trust in television news hit a new low of 18 percent. Is this due to the rise of infotainment, media concentration or another reason altogether? RT's Ameera David finds out by discussing the issue with Abby Martin, host of Breaking the Set, and producer Manuel Rapalo. NATO continues escalation of tensions with Russia
NATO is suspending "all practical civilian and military cooperation" with Russia. Russia and NATO have long cooperated on issues from terrorism to allowing transport of supplies to troops in Afghanistan. This suspension of cooperation along with the announcement of NATO joint military exercises with Ukraine have many experts worried, and questioning why NATO keeps expanding eastward to Russia's borders. RT's Marina Portnaya and Gayane Chichakyan take a look at growing strain between the alliance and Russia as well as NATO's continued expansion. Ron Paul: Revolution continues after Congress - Full Interview
Dr. Ron Paul served as a Republican congressman from Texas for a total of 23 years, covering three different times in office and two different congressional districts. He also ran for president three times, once as a member of the Libertarian Party and twice - including in 2012 - as a member of the Republican Party. After his 2008 presidential run, he wrote "The Revolution: A Manifesto" based on his notes during the campaign. Now, after retiring from Congress, he is continuing to speak out, but this time with his online media venture, the Ron Paul Channel. RT correspondent Meghan Lopez headed down to Clute, Texas to find out what life is like for the former presidential candidate after decades in Congress. Humanitarian crisis swells in Gaza
Power, water and other necessary resources are becoming increasingly inaccessible to many Gaza residents as Israel continues its assault on the small territory. Experts do not expect the growing humanitarian crisis to lessen anytime soon, and they warn the situation may grow even worse. RT’s Manila Chan learns more by speaking with Khalil Alwazer, a human rights attorney in Gaza. World powers deeply involved in the Ukrainian crisis
World powers deeply involved in the Ukrainian crisis
The center of Kiev has been transformed into a battleground as rioters clash with police on Independence Square. Ukraine has seen some of its worst scenes of violence over the last few days, with over 60 dead and over 500 injured in the escalating conflict. Violence escalated on Tuesday after a group of radicals attempted to storm the building of the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada). On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych agreed to a truce with opposition leaders, and that he would begin negotiations with protesters. Now, the US has imposed individual sanctions for 20 Ukrainian politicians for the use of violence on protesters. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said those actions "resemble blackmail." RT's Meghan Lopez discusses the bigger picture of relations between the US, EU, Russia and Ukraine with Brian Becker, the national coordinator for the anti-war ANSWER Coalition. Kerry bashes RT as "propaganda"
Secretary of State John Kerry accused RT Thursday of being a Russian "propaganda bullhorn." Blasting the network for its supposed efforts to "propagandize and distort" the events in Ukraine, Kerry followed a familiar path of ignoring US involvement in the crisis and placing the blame squarely on Russia. Offering analysis with RT's Gayane Chichakyan is Brian Becker, national coordinator of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition. NSA leaker Snowden joins Freedom of the Press Foundation
National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden is gaining in popularity with average Americans as more information about the NSA becomes known, according to a new Quinnipiac study. Snowden agreed this week to join the board of directors of the non-profit Freedom of the Press Foundation, which was founded by the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s. RT's Meghan Lopez speaks with Jesselyn Radack, national security and human rights director for the Government Accountability Project, about Snowden's future and prospects of amnesty. Snowden’s asylum in Russia expires
Whistleblower Edward Snowden’s asylum in Russia is set to expire Thursday, and his future remains in question as the country considers his renewal request. Fearing a return to the US would result in imprisonment and a sham trial, Snowden’s supporters argue the only way he would consider returning to his home country is if the government drops the espionage charges against him. RT’s Lindsay France takes a look at the Snowden saga and what may be next.
