Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto (1963)
Temas 1. Girl From Ipanema 2. Doralice 3. Para Machuchar Meu Coracao 4. Desafinado 5. Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars) 6. So Danco Samba 7. O Grande Amor 8. Vivo Soñando (Dreamer) Músicos Antonio Carlos Jobim (piano) Astrud Gilberto (vocals) Joao Gilberto (vocals, guitar) Milton Banana (drums) Stan Getz (tenor saxophone) Tommy Williams (bass)- published: 01 Jun 2012

Stan Getz - The Final Concert Recording 1990 Munich Philharmonic Hall FULL
Stan Getz was having a rather exceptional summer of 1990 when this performance took place at the Munich Philharmonic Hall in Germany. He had successfully recovered from removal of a malignant tumor and it appeared the subsequent cancer on his liver was beginning to wane thanks to a strict macrobiotic diet. He had been sober for five years, he had a new love in his life and, best of all, his chops were still in tact. Listening to this two-CD set, you can almost feel the exuberance that a revitalized Getz felt at this time. He is upbeat and his trademark lyricism sounds undiminished by his 63 self-destructive years in the jazz world. But while this is a wonderful farewell to a jazz giant, The Final Concert Recording is by no means a retrospective on the career of Stan Getz. A total of five tracks here were culled from Getz's syrupy 1989 release Apacionado. On that album, songs like the title track and "Coba" were rendered impotent by syrupy arrangements and the replacement of strings for synthesizers on this recording doesn't make them any more appealing. More interesting for Getz fans is his breezy version of Miles Davis' "Seven Steps To Heaven" and the selections from the Getz songbook. Pianist Kenny Barron played with Getz on many of his latter day songs and he sounds exquisite here. His acoustic duets with Getz on tracks like "Lonely Lady" and "Voyage" are superb and they easily erase the memory of the synthesized tracks. There is a studio polish to the entire show, but as far as "The Sound" is concerned, the fullness of tone and melodic swing of Stan Getz can be heard untarnished on tracks like "Soul Eyes," "Yours And Mine" and the Billy Strayhorn composition "Blood Count." But the cool fire of Getz soloing on "What Is This Thing Called Love?" is the best indicator of how much Getz still had to offer when cancer finally consumed him in June of 1991 ~ Ken Hohman Tracklisting: 1. Apasionado 00:27 2. I'm Gonna Get You On A Slow Boat To China 10:35 3. Soul Eyes 20:18 4. Espagnira 28:58 5. Coba 34:18 6. Seven Steps To Heaven 39:54 7. El Cajon 47:39 8. Yours And Mine 55:34 9. Voyage 1:04:45 10. Lonely Lady 1:12:31 11. Blood Count 1:18:12 12. What Is This Thing Called Love 1:22:17 13. People Time 1:33:31 14. Stan Getz with Bill Evans Trio - But Beautiful
Bill Evans -- piano Stan Getz -- tenor saxophone Eddie Gomez -- bass Marty Morell -- drums "Grandfather's Waltz" (Lasse Farnlof, Gene Lees) -- "Stan's Blues" (Stan Getz, Gigi Gryce) -- "But Beautiful" (Jimmy Van Heusen, Johnny Burke) -- "Emily" (Johnny Mandel, Johnny Mercer) -- "Lover Man" (James Davis, Roger Ramirez, Jimmy Sherman) -- "Funkallero" (Bill Evans) -- "The Peacocks" (James G. Rowles) -- "You and the Night and the Music" (Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz) -- "See-Saw" (Coleman) -- "The Two Lonely People" (Bill Evans, Jim Hall) -- Recorded live on August 9, 1974 during the Laren International Jazz Festival at the Singer Concertzaal located in Laren, the Netherlands and on August 16, 1974 during Jazz Middelheim held in Antwerp, Belgium, this record features pianist Bill Evans and tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. It was the second time the two musicians recorded together. Evans doesn't play on "Stan's Blues" since the piece was played off the cuff, on Getz's initiative; clearly peeved, the pianist took his hands off the keyboard after a few chords. On the other hand, during the concert held on August 16, after performing "The Peacocks", Getz wished happy birthday to Evans and played an impromptu "Happy Birthday". The duo previously released a studio album in 1964 with the members of Evans' trio (bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell). This second record, which consists of the Bill Evans Trio and their guest Stan Getz during a 1974 European tour, was actually kept in the vault for 22 years. The album was deemed a "vital reissue" by Billboard magazine. Indeed, the German Jazz Door label had originally released a six-track record from the concert in Antwerp (August 16, 1974). Years after Milestone acquired the masters and added four tracks from the concert recorded in Laren a week before.- published: 30 Oct 2013
