The Remarkable & Untold History Of The Celts (History Documentary) | Our History
Subscribe to Our History: https://bit.ly/3v5mKBG
In this landmark film, the anthropologist RICHARD RUDGLEY explores the history of the Celtic world and reveals the Celtic tradition to be a crucial part of what makes a Brit a True Brit. From Germany to the far west of Ireland, by way of Gaul, Pictish Scotland and England under the Roman occupation, Rudgley takes a 5,000-mile journey of discovery that starts around 1,000 BC and ends in the present day. He uncovers remarkable archaeological evidence that puts a brand new light on the savagery and civilisation of an often misunderstood European culture. The film argues that being 'Celtic' is not about blood, tribe, red hair, folk music or believing in the little people. Neither is it about being out of touch and trampled underfoot. It is not...

Are the Irish & Welsh Really Celts?
A brief look at some recent genetic studies that indicate immigration from Gaul into Southern England and Wales, but not Scotland and likely not Ireland. Focusing on the Celtic language I strive to give an answer to this question, as well as when the Celtic language and culture first arrived in Britain and Ireland. I end up focusing more on the Gaels, because if the study is correct, it would demonstrate a direct genetic relation between the Welsh and Gauls, which some people take as the main marker of being a Celt.

Why did the Celts Collapse?
Why did the Celts Collapse?
The Celts were a people of mysticism, tenacity, and rich culture. Though they lacked a written language for some time, making it hard to document their lives and civilizations for future generations, we have managed to learn a fair amount about these fascinating people. How they rose to power, how they existed, and even, where they are now…

The Origins and History of the Ancient Celts
The ancient Celts were various tribal groups living in parts of western and central Europe in the Late Bronze Age and through the Iron Age (c. 700 BCE to c. 400 CE). Given the name Celts by ancient writers, these tribes and their culture migrated and so they established a presence in territories from Portugal to Turkey.
Although diverse tribes and never a single unified state, the ancient Celts were connected by the Celtic language and marked similarities in art, modes of warfare, religion, and burial practices. Although the Celtic culture was absorbed within the Roman Empire from the 1st century BCE, Celts continued to thrive in more remote parts of Europe like Ireland and northern Britain where Celtic languages are still spoken today.

Today, the word Celtic means so many things. To most of us, it means something related to Ireland. We think of intricately designed Irish crosses, four-leaf clovers, and some of the more well-known stories of Celtic mythology. However, while Celtic culture has stayed alive in Ireland, its roots run much deeper, and they extend much farther than the small island nation off the coast of modern-day Great Britain.

It is not even exclusively about the British Isles. The Celts' history is one of a population pushed to the margins by later waves of invasion. Theirs is a tradition that is the root of an older Briton: a golden thread that has been intertwined within the heart of Europe for thousands of years, a Celtic 'magic' that is still there for the taking, offering us a basis for a new Europe.

The Celts were a people of mysticism, tenacity, and rich culture. Though they lacked a written language for some time, making it hard to document their lives and civilizations for future generations, we have managed to learn a fair amount about these fascinating people.
The ‘Celts’ - Definition & Problems
The term ‘Celts’ is commonly used to refer to peoples who lived in Iron Age Europe north of the Mediterranean region prior to the Roman conquest after ancient writers gave them that name. However, it is a problematic label. This is because these peoples were not part of a unified state but, rather, belonged to a multitude of tribes, many of which had no direct contact with each other. The term remains useful for its convenience but it does disguise the complex relations between different western and central European tribes, the overlapping of some cultural features in time and space, and the isolation and uniqueness of other such features. The European Iron Age was certainly a vibrant period of cultural interaction, trade relations, warfare, and migrations.

Primitive Technology: Stone Axe (celt)
The manufacture of a stone ax including the handle from using only primitive tools and materials. It is a celt (pronounced "selt") a type of ax with a polished stone head wedged into a hole or mortise at the end of a wooden handle (not to be confused with a "Kelt" referring to a Celtic person). The head took about a week and a day to make as I chose to make it from a particularly large piece of basalt. The hammer stone used to shape the basalt was of quartz. This involved hammering, pecking, grinding and polishing the head into the final shape. The handle took a day and a morning to make. A chisel was made from stone and a mallet made from a log. These were used to cut the tree for the handle and shape it once down. Fire was used to harden the wood and also to help shape the mortise. The ...

Stone Tools in Action - Shots of Making A Stone Axe Handle
https://www.patreon.com/RootsSchool

Here are a few shots of using a stone adze, flint knife, and stone chisel that I took while making a celt handle(a celt is a stone axe without a groove). The handle is being made out of elm. It is green at this stage. Once I finished roughing it out I oiled the heck out of it an let it dry. Then I scraped it with a 90 degree flint edge to smooth it. At some point I will do this when I have the extra time to flim more of the process but it is always good to see the tools in action.

This sharpened and polished celt made short work of a 5 inch elm, slicing the fibers extremely efficiently. The hardest part of this process has been getting a handle to hold up to aggressive percussion. A new handle is in the works. Take care and thanks for watching!

The ax was then used to cut down a tree the day after the handle was a tree itself. It is a more efficient tool for felling trees than the hand ax I made and at the time of uploading this video has cut down 4 trees which I will use later. Because this stone axe is blunter than a steel one, the blade needs to hit the tree at angles greater than 45 degrees- otherwise the blade would glance off. So celts were used more like wedges than modern axes.
