Welsh poetry may refer to poetry in the Welsh language, Anglo-Welsh poetry, or other poetry written in Wales or by Welsh poets.
Wales has one of the earliest literary traditions in Northern Europe, stretching back to the days of Aneirin (fl. 550) and Taliesin (second half of the 6th century), and the haunting Stafell Cynddylan, which is the oldest recorded literary work by a woman in northern Europe.
The 9th century Canu Llywarch Hen and Canu Heledd are both associated with the earlier prince Llywarch Hen.
Welsh poetry is connected directly to the bardic tradition, and is historically divided into four periods. The first period, before 1100, is known as the period of Y Cynfeirdd ("The earliest poets") or Yr Hengerdd ("The old poetry"). It roughly dates from the emergence of the Welsh language from Brythonic to the arrival of the Normans in Wales towards 1100. The second period, the period of the Poets of the Princes (Beirdd y Tywysogion, also called Y Gogynfeirdd), lasted from about 1100 until 1350, or until 1282, the date of the overthrow of Llywelyn. The final classical period of Welsh poetry, referred to as the period of the Poets of the Nobility (Beirdd yr Uchelwyr) or simply Cywyddwyr, lasted from 1350 to 1600. These included Dafydd ap Gwilym and Iolo Goch, and they produced many cywyddau. There was a lull in the production of poetry after the union with England in the 16th century. The year 1600 is generally taken to mark the beginning of modern Welsh poetry.
James Owen Sullivan (February 9, 1981 – December 28, 2009), professionally known by his stage name The Rev (shortened version of The Reverend Tholomew Plague), was an American musician, composer and songwriter, best known as the drummer, composer, songwriter, co-lead vocalist and founding member for the American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold. The Rev was widely regarded and critically acclaimed for his work on Avenged Sevenfold albums, and contributed entire songs written and composed by himself, such as Chapter Four, Afterlife, "A Little Piece of Heaven" and Almost Easy. He was also the lead vocalist/pianist in Pinkly Smooth, a side project where he was known by the name Rathead, with fellow Avenged Sevenfold member and childhood best friend, guitarist Synyster Gates, and he was the drummer for Suburban Legends from 1998 to 1999.
Sullivan grew up and lived in Orange County, CA. He received his first pair of drum sticks at the age of five and own drum set at the age of ten. In high school, he started playing in bands. Before leaving to join Avenged Sevenfold as one of the band's founding members, Sullivan was the drummer for the third wave ska band Suburban Legends. At the age of twenty he recorded his first album with Avenged Sevenfold titled Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. His early influences included Frank Zappa and King Crimson. The Rev said in a Modern Drummer Magazine interview that "I was raised on that stuff as much as rock and metal."
Performed by: Ffynnon, Lynne Denman History: Amongst the oldest surviving Welsh poetry is an account of battles in the Old North, a text known after the protagonists as Y Gododdin. In the same manuscripts are a couple of odd bits of verse which clearly do not belong, and one of these is a nursery rhyme in which a mother tells her son - the Dinogad of the title - about his father's hunting prowess. The seventh century text, with a bit of orthographic licence, is something like: Peis dinogat e vreith vreith. o grwyn balaot ban wreith. chwit chwit chwidogeith. gochanwn gochenyn wythgeith. pan elei dy dat ty e helya; llath ar y ysgwyd llory eny law. ef gelwi gwn gogyhwc. giff gaff. dhaly dhaly dhwg dhwg. ef lledi bysc yng corwc. mal ban llad. llew llywywg. pan elei dy dat ty e vynyd. dydyg...

The Rev. RS Thomas. Priest and peasant -------------------------- You are ill, Davies, ill in mind An old canker, to your kind Peculiar, has laid waste the brain's Potential richness in delight And beauty; and your body grows Awry like an old thorn for lack Of the soil's depth; and sickness there Uncurls slowly its small tongues Of fungus that shall, thickening, swell And choke you, while your few leaves Are green still. And so you work In the wet fields and suffer pain And loneliness as a tree takes The night's darkness, the day's rain While I watch you, and pray for you, And so increase my small store Of credit in the bank of God, Who sees you suffer and me pray And touches you with the sun's ray, That heals not, yet blinds my eyes And seals my lips as Job's...

Far Rockaway, Iwan Llwyd [translated from the Welsh by Robert Minhinnick] I will take you to Far Rockaway, Far Rockaway, the name strums a guitar in my head, sings a choir of summer and sea-tide rhythms: talks of lovers over black coffee on a night-ride in a pick-up truck, sme...

Hi Everyone, Today I am fulfilling a promise. Not too long ago I did a special Q&A; video as a special thank you for reaching one hundred subscribers. If you saw that video you will know that I asked each person in the comments to leave a request and I would be selecting one person at random and dedicating a video to them by doing their request. So this is for Jesse Altamuro, well done on winning and I hope you enjoy this! I read 2 poems in the Welsh language as I whisper them ear to ear and super close up. The first poem is called 'Ar lan y Môr' or 'Beside the Sea' in English and the second is called 'Rhyfel' or 'war' in English. I hope this helps you get to sleep. Don't forget to like the video with a thumbs up and please subscribe if you want to see more from me.

I recite an excerpt from "Merched Llanbadarn," by Dafydd ap Gwilym. Plygu rhag llid yr ydwyf, Pla ar holl ferched y plwyf! Am na chefais, drais drawsoed, Onaddun' yr un erioed Na morwyn fwyn ofynaig, Na merch fach, na gwrach, na gwraig. I am twisted with passion -- plague on all the girls of the parish! Since I suffered from trysts which went amiss, and could never win a single one of them, neither gentle hopeful maid, nor little lass, nor hag, nor wife.

Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams. Tuesday 16 November 2010 In Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Hotspur is made to refer to the partiality of Owain Glyndŵr (Glendower) for prophecies, which he characterises dismissively as "skimble-skamble stuff".This lecture will explore the authentic medieval Welsh literary corpus associated with Glyndŵr, consisting in the main of bardic eulogies rather than prophecies and mostly composed before the outbreak of the 1400 revolt. The poems will be examined in historical context including some of Scottish interest (alluding to Glyndŵr's participation in the English invasion of Scotland in 1385).Themes to be considered will include their possible utility, both before and during the revolt, as political propaganda designed to further Owain's cause. http://www/welshwne.org On September 19, 2015, the Welsh Society of Western New England hosted “A Welsh Poet and the Ghost of Dylan Thomas” presented by visiting Welsh poet Tony Curtis. Tony Curtis was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2001. He is Emeritus Professor of Poetry at the University of South Wales (Glamorgan). In 2014, Dylan Thomas’s centenary year, he toured a talk based on his memoir “My Life with Dylan Thomas”. The presentation centers on Tony Curtis’ experiences and poetry writing, growing up in the shadow and the shining light of Dylan Thomas, Wales’ greatest ever writer: “Dylan was the mountain you had to climb or bypass; tunnelling through him left you in the dark.” This video is the first of three featuring a portion of Curtis's talk.

Extracts from the 'Cinema 16' symposium "Poetry and the Film" held in New York in October 28 1953, attended by Dylan Thomas less than 2 weeks before his untimely death at the age of 39 on 9 November 1953. The Welsh poet can be heard gently mocking the pretensions of the evening's topic, to the great amusement of the audience (other participants included Arthur Miller, Maya Deren, Parker Tyler and Willard Maas). The event would turn out to be Dylan Thomas's penultimate public appearance. In the early hours of 5 November 1953 he fell into a coma and died on 9 November 1953 (from undiagnosed and untreated pneumonia).
