Folk music includes both traditional music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival. The term originated in the 19th century but is often applied to music that is older than that. Certain types of folk music are also called world music.
Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted by mouth, as music of the lower classes, and as music with unknown composers. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles. One meaning often given is that of old songs, with no known composers; another is music that has been transmitted and evolved by a process of oral transmission or performed by custom over a long period of time.
Starting in the mid-20th century a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. This form of music is sometimes called contemporary folk music or folk revival music to distinguish it from earlier folk forms. This type of folk music also includes fusion genres such as folk rock, folk metal, electric folk, and others. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, in English it shares the same name, and it often shares the same performers and venues as traditional folk music. Even individual songs may be a blend of the two.
Bob Snider is a singer/songwriter from Toronto via Nova Scotia, Canada.
Bob Snider is a Canadian icon and legend who grew up in Toronto and later moved to Bear River, Nova Scotia. Upon returning to Toronto in the 80s he befriended Bob Wiseman and other songwriters in the Toronto open stages at Fat Albert's coffee house. The Leslie Spit Treeo, Ron Sexsmith and Kyp Harness were notable friends. Bob Wiseman produced and arranged the debut record entitled You which garnered attention far and wide leading to a deal with EMI. A folk musician, Snider plays almost exclusively songs he has written himself, although notable exception was at the Bear River Reunion, where he played a cover of an old blues tune.[citation needed] Snider's songs have been covered by Ashley MacIsaac, Meryn Cadell and the Leslie Spit Treeo. Moxy Früvous has also covered Ash Hash on The 'b' Album. Over the years he was often be found busking in Toronto's Kensington Market district. In 2009 he relocated permanently to Bear River, Nova Scotia. His daughter, fabric artist/ designer Sarah Snider also lives there.
Jean Ritchie (born December 8, 1922) is an American folk music singer, songwriter, and Appalachian dulcimer player.
Abigail and Balis Ritchie of Viper, Kentucky had 14 children, and Jean was the youngest. Ten girls slept in one room of the farming family's house in the Cumberland Mountains.
Jean Ritchie quickly memorized songs and performed at local dances and the country fair in Hazard. In the late 1940s the family acquired a radio and discovered that what they were singing was hillbilly music, a word they had never heard before. In the mid-thirties Alan Lomax recorded in Kentucky for the Library of Congress's Archive of Folk Song. Among the people he recorded were The Singing Ritchies.[dubious – discuss]
Ritchie attended Cumberland College (Now the University of the Cumberlands) in Williamsburg, Kentucky and later the University of Kentucky in Lexington. At college she joined the glee club and choir and learned to play piano. In 1946 she graduated with a BA in social work. During the war, she taught in elementary school.
Joan Chandos Baez ( /ˈbaɪ.ɛz/) (born January 9, 1941 as Joan Chandos Báez) is an American folk singer, songwriter, musician and a prominent activist in the fields of human rights, peace and environmental justice.
Baez has a distinctive vocal style, with a strong vibrato. Her recordings include many topical songs and material dealing with social issues.
Baez began her career performing in coffeehouses in Boston and Cambridge, and rose to fame as an unbilled performer at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. She began her recording career in 1960, and achieved immediate success. Her first three albums, Joan Baez, Joan Baez, Vol. 2, and Joan Baez in Concert all achieved gold record status, and stayed on the charts for two years.
Baez has had a popular hit song with "Diamonds & Rust" and hit covers of Phil Ochs's "There but for Fortune" and The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". Other songs associated with Baez include "Farewell, Angelina", "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word", "Joe Hill", "Sweet Sir Galahad" and "We Shall Overcome". She performed three of the songs at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, helped to bring the songs of Bob Dylan to national prominence, and has displayed a lifelong commitment to political and social activism in the fields of nonviolence, civil rights, human rights and the environment.
Joni Mitchell, CC (born Roberta Joan Anderson; November 7, 1943) is a Canadian musician, singer songwriter, and painter. Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatchewan and Western Canada and then busking in the streets and dives of Toronto. In 1965 she moved to the United States and, touring constantly, began to be recognized when her original songs ("Urge for Going," "Chelsea Morning," "Both Sides, Now," "The Circle Game") were covered by notable folk singers, allowing her to sign with Reprise Records and record her own debut album in 1968. Settling in Southern California, Mitchell and her popular songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock" helped define an era and a generation. Her more starkly personal 1971 recording Blue has been called one of the best albums ever made. Musically restless, Mitchell switched labels and began moving toward jazz rhythms by way of lush pop textures on 1974's Court and Spark, her best-selling LP, featuring her radio hits "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris."
As I walk these narrow streets
Where a million passin' feet are before me
With my guitar in my hand
Suddenly I realize nobody knows me
Well, yesterday the motor toots screamed
And cried my name out for a song
Now the streets are empty
And the crowds they go on home
With the rain on my face
There's no place where I belong
And my whole life consists of a story
Of poem at a song
Now the truths I've tried to tell you
Are as distant as the moon
More than hundred years too late
Two hundred years too soon
I'm a child of the sage
Lord's been in the pages of a book
But when I'm dust and clay
Where other people stop and to look
And will they marvel and miracles
And perform into the high size to the spider
Oh, will they take the pages of the book to light of fire?
With the rain on my face
He used to sing his song to his Sara Jane the folk singer
His songs filled with love made the mountains ring the folk singer
At first Sara Jane was to be his bride but as his fame grew she was pushed aside
Sweet mountain girl would say goodbye to the folk singer
He let his hair grow long and he dressed in style the folk singer
His voice was pure and the fans went wild for the folk singer
He said Sara Jane was much too plain so he left her alone as he gained more fame
But sorrow will come like the mountain rain to the folk singer
[ harmonica ]
Lavished in glory fortune at his feet the folk singer
Awoke one morning and he couldn't speak the folk singer
The doctors said his singing days were through thousands wept Sara Jane did too
He couldn't sing now his friends were few the folk singer
Sick at heart in the mountains again the folk singer
Now Sara Jane didn't look so plain to the folk singer
Ah the power of love can do strange things cause love has made him sing again
Only now he sings for his Sara Jane the folk singer
Like a folk singer's song I'm moving on
And I'm not the kind of man that acts very strong
When the girls are looking on
When the girls are looking on
If you tied my hands and put chains on my feet
I can picture myself walking down any street
Telling people that I meet
Looks like rain to me
Every single day at eleven I'm home in bed in sleep heaven
Alone 'cause my girl leaves at seven ain't got time for my bedn'in
She said stop pretendin' you're not JOhn Lennon
Will I ever get over this
Having tasted your lips with a kiss
You can cross me off your list
Take these cuffs from off my wrists
And drop your fists
Soon as I'm well I'm gonna leave my house
Become more of a man and less like a mouse
Drive my car down south to the Mississippi's mouth
In the gulf of Mexico I'll get soused
Every girl I made in the shade of Esplanade
I've saved in a song that I play when I'm afraid
Of a full scale air-raid
From the choices that I've made
When I heard the news about the union dues
And how each time I lose no matter which door I choose
I put on my walking shows
And I just cruised (and you know I got bruised)
It was fun while it lasted until it was blasted
Right out of the water and into fantastic
Now he feels shafted and she's already past it
