It started with an act of terrorism: a dirty bomb -a radioactive attack on American soil that completely devastated the American mid-west and left millions dead or dying. Immediately our government looked to overseas threats -Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan... North Korea... but then the truth came. The attack was not carried out by foreign operatives, but by a coordinated effort of domestic terrorist. America was under attack by its own citizens. The government moved quickly, and with one fell swoop they seized complete control of the country, closing our borders, establishing a curfew, implementing a special police force, and regulating all aspects of our lives. They took control of the internet. Implemented a military draft, took away our firearms, and restricted all air travel. Democrats and Republicans united, and passed a law to give the government complete emergency control for the duration of the crisis. They called this law the United States Security Enforcement Act. It's been nearly 10 years and martial law is still in effect. Unemployment is at 38%. All citizens are tracked through their digital devices. All businesses are owned by the government. Special government police troops patrol the streets, seeking out and detaining suspected terrorist. The population lives in fear. We are prisoners in our own country, held hostage by our own government. Many of us now believe the government was directly responsible for the attacks in the mid-west that killed so many. They used our fear to seize control. The general population starves while the corporate government grows fat. People began to take to the streets, protesting, demanding the truth. The government fought back, detaining and executing thousands in a purge of suspected insurgents. What began as civil unrest may soon become a full scale civil war. This is America. The time is now. Stanley Goodspeed, who lives in Washington D.C., is a biochemist who works for the FBI. Soon after his fiancée Carla Pestalozzi announces that she is pregnant, Stanley gets a call from FBI director James Womack. Womack tells Stanley that San Francisco's Alcatraz Island has been taken hostage, along with 81 tourists, by marine General Francis Xavier Hummel who, for years, has been protesting the government's refusal to pay benefits to families of war veterans who died during covert military operations. The death of his wife Barbara Hummel on March 9, 1995 drove General Hummel over the edge, and now he's holding hostages in order to get his point across. Stanley is needed because General Hummel has stolen some VX gas warheads and has announced that he will launch them onto San Francisco unless his demands are met. Stanley knows how to disarm the bombs, but Stanley needs someone who knows Alcatraz well enough to get him inside. That man is former British intelligence agent John Patrick Mason, who has been in prison for the past 30 years without a trial because he was accused of stealing the private files of 'J. Edgar Hoover' (qv). In 1962, John became the only inmate ever to escape from Alcatraz, and he stayed out of Alcatraz long enough to father a daughter named Jade Angelou. Despite his extreme hatred of the FBI, John agrees to help Stanley. When John and Stanley are sent into Alcatraz with a Navy SEAL team, General Hummel's men kill the entire SEAL team, leaving Stanley and John to work on their own to rescue the hostages.

On September 30, cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan were killed in a drone strike in Yemen. Two weeks later, another U.S. drone killed Anwar's 16-year-old son, Abdul-rahman, in Yemen. A month later, a U.S. citizen named Jude Kenan Mohammad was killed in Pakistan. For the past two-and-a-half years, the Obama administration has refused to release its legal rationale for killing American citizens overseas. That changed on Monday when a federal court released a heavily redacted 41-page memo. It concludes the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force gave the U.S. government the authority to target Anwar al-Awlaki, who the Obama administration claims had joined al-Qaeda. On Capitol Hill, Sen. Ron Wyden praised the release of the memo but said it raises many questions. Wyden asked, "How much evidence does the president need to determine that a particular American is a legitimate target for military action? Can the president strike an American anywhere in the world?" Questions also remain over when the United States can kill non-U.S. citizens. There's little doubt among political circles and pundits that the resignation of prime minister nominee Moon Chang-keuk on Tuesday... has dealt a heavy blow to President Park Geun-hye. With two of her recent picks stepping down even before their confirmation hearings,... it's back to the drawing board for her reform drive. Choi You-sun has more. The withdrawal of President Park's second prime minister nominee in the past month has put the brakes on the president's reform drive,... brought on by April's ferry disaster. It's been two months since Prime Minister Chung Hong-won tendered his resignation for the government's lax response to the ferry accident,... and the search for his successor has gone back to square one. There is a line-up of Cabinet minister nominees awaiting confirmation hearings and the details of a government restructuring plan remain in limbo. The back-to-back personnel appointment failures could come at a heavy price for the president and the ruling party ahead of next month's by-elections. There's mounting criticism within both the ruling and opposition parties over the presidential office's personnel verification system, and the opposition is demanding the presidential chief of staff take responsibility. This means lawmakers are likely to go over the president's nominees for eight Cabinet positions and the chief of the state intelligence agency with a fine-tooth comb at their confirmation hearings next month. Some of them have already come under fire, including the nominee to head the National Intelligence Service Lee Byung-kee, who's been implicated in illegal political funding activities in the past. Education minister nominee Kim Myung-soo stands accused of plagiarizing students' thesis papers. During a three-month span in 2011, U.S. drones killed four American citizens overseas. On September 30, cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan were killed in a drone strike in Yemen. Two weeks later, another U.S. drone killed Anwar's 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, in Yemen. A month later, a U.S. citizen named Jude Kenan Mohammad was killed in Pakistan. For the past two-and-a-half years, the Obama administration has refused to release its legal rationale for killing American citizens overseas. That changed on Monday when a federal court released a heavily redacted 41-page memo. It concludes the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force gave the U.S. government the authority to target Anwar al-Awlaki, who the Obama administration claims had joined al-Qaeda. On Capitol Hill, Sen. Ron Wyden praised the release of the memo but said it raises many questions. Wyden asked, "How much evidence does the president need to determine that a particular American is a legitimate target for military action? Can the president strike an American anywhere in the world?" Questions also remain over when the United States can kill non-U.S. citizens.

Football match-fixing: On the trail of the Ghana FA President

Following an investigation by the Telegraph and Channel 4's Dispatches into football match-fixing, The Telegraph tries to speak to the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, who is currently in Brazil. The Telegraph's chief reporter Gordon Rayner and photographer Lewis Whyld travelled 1,000 miles from Rio de Janeiro to Maceió on the Brazilian coast to try to interview Kwesi Nyantakyi at his hotel. When they attempted to call Mr Nyantakyi in his hotel room, they were stopped by members of the Ghanaian FA in the hotel lobby and told to cease filming the encounter. The Ghanaian FA press officer, Ibrahim Sannie Daara said that Mr Nyantakyi was unvailable for an interview. The Telegraph wanted to speak to Mr Nyantakyi following the publication of video footage filmed in June showing him meeting undercover reporters at the St Regis Bal Harbour hotel in Miami. The meeting was the culmination of a six month investigation by the Telegraph and Channel 4's Dispatches into football match-fixing, in which representatives of "Diamond Capital" said they wanted to arrange football matches while appointing the referees. Appointing referees is a common way of fixing the result of a football match. Before the Miami meeting, the fixers said that the President of the Ghana FA had raised concerns that he might be accidentally holding a meeting with undercover reporters. Two fixers -- Christopher Forsythe and Obed Nketiah -- had arranged the Miami meeting, but Mr Nyantakyi had already spoken to the Diamond Capital representatives on Skype. Over the course of the meeting, Mr Nyantakyi said that the sports investment group should have an "experimental period" before the Ghana FA agreed that all their friendly matches should be organised by Diamond. Although the contract specifically stated that Diamond would appoint the referees -- in direct breach of Fifa rules -- Mr Nyantakyi only raised concerns about the exclusivity clause. After being contacted by the Telegraph, the Ghana FA said they would report the matter to the police.
