Lou Gehrig 'Luckiest man' speech remembered 75 years later
Lou Gehrig received a silver trophy from his manager, but he could not lift it, or hold it for very long. He had to set it down on the grass. Then Joe McCarthy walked Gehrig toward a bank of microphones to make the most famous and enduring speech ever made by an athlete. "Clearly too moved to speak, Gehrig summoned the strength for his brief, but stirring valedictory," said commentator Lowell Thomas in the two-minute "Movietone News" reel that would be shown in theaters. What happened next, of course, has lived on. Gehrig, who knew that he had an incurable disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), said, "For two weeks, you've been reading about a bad break. ... Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." That was July 4, 1939, 75 years ago, and the speech, one of the best-remembered of the 20th century, remains one of the most quoted in the 21st. Right down to the echo of the public address system, picked up by the newsreel microphones, to recite the speech is part of growing up a baseball fan. Gehrig's optimism remains a template for fighting an ultimately unwinnable fight, for living life to the last moment. The speech cut across all cultural lines. "I might have been given a bad break," Gehrig said in closing, "but I've got an awful lot to live for." Gehrig, only 36, played in 2,130 consecutive games and hit 493 home runs for the Yankees before taking himself out of the lineup on May 2, 1939, recognizing that he could not continue, and he went to the Mayo Clinic to determine what was wrong. After his speech, he remained with the Yankees for most of the summer, dressed for home games, filling his role as team captain. He later served on New York's parole commission and died at 37 in 1941. The movie "Pride of the Yankees" immortalized Gehrig's life, his speech the natural climax of the film. ALS, of course, is now widely known as Lou Gehrig's disease.- published: 04 Jul 2014
