Iran and the P5+1 group have agreed to extend the deadline for a final deal over the Iranian nuclear energy program by four months. The announcement was made after extensive negotiations between the Iranian team and the US team in the Austrian capital Vienna. The original deadline for both sides to reach a deal was scheduled to expire on Sunday. It has now been pushed back to November 24th. Iran and P5+1 have also agreed to meet at the earliest opportunity to continue the talks. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton have told reporters significant gaps still remain that need to be addressed during the course of the talks. And now US Secretary of State John Kerry says 2.8 billion dollars of Iranian funds will be unfrozen during the course of the talks.

Dozens Of Palestinians Injured At West Bank Protests.
  • Order:

  • Updated: 25 Jul 2014
Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian protester and wounded about 200 on July 24 in confrontations with several thousand people demonstrating in the occupied West Bank against a 17-day-old Israeli offensive in Gaza, Palestinian medical officials said. Hospital officials earlier said three protesters had been killed, but revised that to one killed and three others in critical condition and on life support. Some 200 protesters were injured, a hospital doctor said. The Israeli military confirmed troops had used "riot dispersal means" against protesters who threw rocks and firebombs at them and blocked a road with burning tyres. The protest erupted after allies of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement marched from the West Bank city of Ramallah to the edges of Jerusalem in protest against Israel's war against Hamas militants in Gaza where the Palestinian death toll has neared 800. Israel Radio said the protest appeared to be the largest since the end of a 2000-2005 Palestinian uprising. Israeli troops have killed two other Palestinians this week in smaller confrontations in the West Bank, territory Israel captured along with Gaza in a 1967 war. Protests were also reported in Jerusalem, where police confronted Palestinian protesters in and near the old walled city, including outside a flashpoint holy site revered by Muslims and Jews. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said several officers were injured by rocks thrown at them in Jerusalem and that about 20 protesters were arrested.

"Growing Humanitarian Crisis": Palestinian Toll Tops 650 as Israel Attacks Gaza's Sole Power Plant
  • Order:
  • Duration: 6:38
  • Updated: 23 Jul 2014
http://www.democracynow.org - Israel continues to bombard the Gaza Strip amidst talks over a ceasefire. Israeli military attacks today include the bombing of Gaza's sole power plant and the heavy shelling of Khan Yunis, killing six people and leaving at least 20 wounded. The Palestinian death toll is near 650, including more than 160 children. Some 4,000 have been wounded. According to Gaza officials, 475 houses have been totally destroyed and more than 2,600 homes have been partially damaged. Israel has also struck 46 schools, 56 mosques and seven hospitals. Two more Israeli soldiers have been killed, bringing the Israeli military death toll inside Gaza to 29. A farm worker from Thailand also died inside Israel after being hit by rocket fire from Gaza. On the diplomatic front, Secretary of State John Kerry is in Israel today for talks with Israel and then the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has endorsed a Hamas call to condition a ceasefire on ending the seven-year blockade of the Gaza Strip. Speaking today at the U.N. human rights council, Navi Pillay, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said there is a "strong possibility" Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza. Pillay cited Israel's deadly attack on residential homes in the Shuja'iya neighborhood and the shelling of the al-Aqsa Hospital. On Tuesday, U.S. and European airlines halted flights to Tel Aviv after a rocket strike landed about a mile from the airport.
