The employees lack of respect seems to be indicative of the company's culture: it is not about the customer, it is about what Comcast wants. Comcast has also been in the news for its anti-union sentiment, lobbying, outrageous CEO pay and support for SOPA and PIPA, two bills that would allow Comcast to unfairly influence end-user connection speeds. There are few Comcast customer service calls that go well. But there are probably even fewer—we hope, anyway—that go this bad. Comcast customer Ryan Block had recently called up Comcast's customer service line to cancel his service, which is simple enough. Just not for the customer service rep Block reach on Comcast's end. We drop in at about 10 minutes into the call, according to Block description, and Comcast's rep is in full-breakdown mode. All of it, it seems, began with the question "Why is it that you don't want faster speed? Help me understand why you don't want faster internet." It is, in effect, the telecommunications version of the clingy ex-boyfriend, just begging you to not leave and make it all better. Block, for his part, remained steadfast. He writes on Soundcloud: The representative (name redacted) continued aggressively repeating his questions, despite the answers given, to the point where my wife became so visibly upset she handed me the phone. ... This recording picks up roughly 10 minutes into the call, whereby she and I have already played along and given a myriad of reasons and explanations as to why we are canceling (which is why I simply stopped answering the rep's repeated question — it was clear the only sufficient answer was "Okay, please don't disconnect our service after all.") Ultimately, Block perseveres through the Comcast rep's fusillade of questions to emerge victorious, canceling his service to switch over to Astound. I said, again "No, thank you, we've already switched, I just need to turn off the service in the old place." It went back and forth like that for another five minutes. At one point I actually pleaded with him, "Please, I don't want to get into a back-and-forth, our minds are made up and we just need to cancel." He wouldn't relent. So Belmont handed the phone to Block. "Overhearing the conversation, I knew this would not be very fun," Block wrote on SoundCloud. "What I did not know is how oppressive this conversation would be. To help others understand what he'd endured, Block posted 8 minutes of the much longer conversation he had with a Comcast retention specialist. In it, Block says over and over that he just wants to cancel his service. Comcast has since said that they're looking into the matter, and added, "This isn't how our customer service representatives are trained to operate." Sources say that Ryan Block went through up to 20 long minutes on the phone with Comcast - in his attempt to cancel and terminate any further services with the company. However, one of the representatives did not follow the main rule(s) of customer service and waste everybody's time! Ryan Block is one of the millions of customers that don't deserve to get pushed around no matter how big your services are, how fast your internet is, how many channels you provide, like who cares?!!! I should know! This is one reason I stick with providers that don't put me through hoops like this. Comcast reported that they issued an immediate apology and started investigating this. Please note that this is NOT an actual customer-to-business phone prank. This is a business-to-customer prank instead! And it's a mortal headache. To solve the problem and view the channels I was paying for would cost at least an additional $20-30 a month! Enter the HD Homerun Prime -- it's a little box that works with a CableCARD and provides a roll-your-own solution without the need for cable boxes. I am using it with the Windows Media Center software to push cable channels to Xbox 360's running the Media Center extender app. It works fairly well but I still have some issues to resolve.
