Today (Sept. 22, 2010) is the groundbreaking ceremony at Deer Creek Station in Brookings County, SD. Now, outside it's wet and dreary. But indoors, South Dakotans are celebrating a $405 million investment in their state.
Even though inches of rain were falling, more than 150 neighbors stopped out at the Deer Creek Station site for the celebration.
(Ron Harper): "You add up those facilities that we own, or those that we helped to become a reality, think of a wind farm, Basin Electric will have invested 1-point-2-billion-dollars in the state of South Dakota."
Basin Electric's newest power plant will be fueled by natural gas. It will run during the hours when there's the most demand for electricity.
(Jeff Nelson): "To come back, to throw the switch, and turn on what is an investment in our confidence in the future of rural America and rural South Dakota."
(Dusty Johnson): "The local review committee report was one of the finest that's ever been received by the commission and they were unwaveringly supportive of the project, talking about the positive impact in area after area after area. That does not happen easily."
Even though construction has been slowed down a lot by the weather, you can see progress on site. Here is where the natural gas pipeline will feed the plant.
(Don Marker): "Benefits our members, who live in and around these communities, with the electricity that's generated right here at Deer Creek. It will be used to power their homes and businesses."
(Track): Construction at Deer Creek Station started at the end of July. The project should be complete in 2012.
(Kermit Pearson): "Today, I'm proud to be a rural American, but I'm also proud to be a co-op member."
(Gavin McCollam): "The cooperative spirit is alive and well at Basin Electric, from the board members to Mr. Harper, all the way down. Part of that cooperative spirit is just simply being a good neighbor."
(Track): Here are a couple folks who know that from their experience with Basin Electric Property and Right-of-Way specialist Kelly Suko.
(Anna Even): "We both grew up on a farm, so we appreciate the land and what it represents, and when Kelly approached us about buying it, we weren't even dreaming of selling it. So, he had to do some talking and give us kind of a vision of what they were going to do here in order for us to let it go." (Rick Even): "Actually, we were going to sell it right away, but we got all these free meals. (laugh)"
(Track): Rick and Anna Even owned the land the Deer Creek Station site is on. It's land they bought together as a young couple.
(Anna Even): "It's still really disconcerting to come and see how it's changed, you know, 'cause when you're a farmer you see the land in a different way. But we're excited for what's it's going to do, what it's already done and doing for the Elkton school, for the outlying communities. So, for the bigger picture and for the better good of everybody, it's a good thing."

My trip to Europe is coming to an end and this video gives an overview of what I have learned about Luxembourg, it's history, it's people, places to see, things to do.
Luxembourg has this catch cry, 'We want to remain as we are' and in that spirit of independence and holding onto what is unique, I have decided to do this video in 'Australian English' - so be warned, there is some course language!
Some footnotes:
Steel doesn't grow in the ground - iron ore does!
"Luxembourg is considered one of the strongest fortifications in Europe"
"Luxembourg remained an underdeveloped agrarian country for most of the century. As a result of this about one in five of the inhabitants emigrated to the United States between 1841 and 1891."
Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, and ranked 179th in size of all the 194 independent countries of the world; the country is about 2,586 square kilometres (998 sq mi) in size, and measures 82 km (51 mi) long and 57 km (35 mi) wide.
"Between 1945 and 2005, the economic structure of Luxembourg changed significantly. The crisis of the metallurgy sector, which began in the mid-1970s and lasted till the late 1980s, nearly pushed the country into economic recession, given the monolithic dominance of that sector. The Tripartite Coordination Committee, consisting of members of the government, management representatives, and trade union leaders, succeeded in preventing major social unrest during those years, thus creating the myth of a “Luxembourg model” characterized by social peace. Although in the early years of the 21st century Luxembourg enjoyed one of the highest GNP per capita in the world, this was mainly due to the strength of its financial sector, which gained importance at the end of the 1960s. Thirty-five years later, one-third of the tax proceeds originated from that sector. The harmonization of the tax system across Europe could, however, seriously undermine the financial situation of the grand duchy."
"Luxembourg is the world's second largest investment fund centre (after the United States), the most important private banking centre in the eurozone and Europe's leading centre for reinsurance companies. Moreover, the Luxembourg government has aimed to attract internet start-ups, with Skype and Amazon being two of the many internet companies that have shifted their regional headquarters to Luxembourg."
"In March 2010, the Sunday Telegraph reported that most of Kim Jong-Il's $4bn in secret accounts is in Luxembourg banks"
"In 2013, Luxembourg is ranked as the 2nd safest tax haven in the world, behind Switzerland."
"In 2011, according to the IMF, Luxembourg was the second richest country in the world, with a per capita GDP on a purchasing-power parity (PPP) basis of $80,119."
"Luxembourg has been one of the strongest advocates of the European Union in the tradition of Robert Schuman. In 1957, Luxembourg became one of the six founding countries of the European Economic Community (later the European Union) and in 1999 it joined the euro currency area."
"Luxembourg sells the most alcohol in Europe per capita.[124] However, the large proportion of alcohol purchased by customers from neighbouring countries contributes to the statistically high level of alcohol sales per capita; this level of alcohol sales is thus not representative of the actual alcohol consumption of the Luxembourg population."
"In 2013 there were about 88,000 inhabitants with Portuguese nationality."
"McDonalds Australia channel $500,000 million of their Australian tax commitments to Luxembourg."
Judd mat Gaardebounen, or Smoked Collar of Pork with Broad Beans, is one of the most widely recognized national dishes of the Luxembourg.
Anna Creek Station, in northern South Australia, is the biggest of the company’s properties and, at more than 23,000sq km, it is larger than Ireland.

http://basinelectric.wordpress.com
On Oct. 15 at 5 p.m., Brookings County farmer Dan Lutgen made a 911 call. "This is an exercise. ... I just hit a buried pipeline that comes through my property."
The phone call was three months in the making through a partnership between Brookings County Emergency Management and Basin Electric staff to perform a full-scale emergency exercise on the 14-mile natural gas pipeline that connects Deer Creek Station to the Northern Border Pipeline.
Bob Hill, Brookings County development director/emergency manager, said the Basin Electric pipeline runs through the service areas of four different fire departments. "Hendricks Fire Department will get the call. We didn't know that until we started the planning, and that's important to know. (Hendricks is in Minnesota.) We got them involved as soon as we found that out. This is another state's fire department coming into Brookings County. We pay money to that fire department, and we expect them to respond accordingly."
From Basin Electric's perspective, shortly after the 911 call was made by Lutgen, 911 called Basin Electric dispatch at Headquarters. Brian Donbroski, lead operator technician in Deer Creek Station's control room, received a call from Headquarters to shut off the gas. Donbroski had Kevin Crose, outside operator technician, call Northern Border Pipeline to close off the control valve. Crose then grabbed an emergency kit, and drove to the pipeline to shut off the manual valve, and then came to the site to advise the fire department. All that took a little less than an hour.
At 5:20 p.m., the Hendricks Fire Department responded as expected and took command of the situation. Brookings Fire Department showed up as well.
Kelly Schafer, Basin Electric safety coordinator -- ND, said Hendricks Fire Department hadn't been included in previous drills. "This is why we do these events. When we have emergency responders out to the plant in the future to review our plans and procedures, they will be included."
In addition to drills like this, Basin Electric holds annual first responder training and meetings, according to Kevin Tschosik, Basin Electric manager of distributed generation. While the South Dakota Department of Transportation does not require this drill, Tschosik said Basin Electric chose to go through it anyway. "This is a good thing to do for our employees, first responders, landowners and for the general public. We want the public to be aware Basin Electric is in the area with a gas pipeline, and we are prepared in case something would happen."
Joshua Rossow, Basin Electric environmental coordinator, said the drill helps test communications, which was an issue. Cell service was nonexistent in the valley in which the exercise was performed, and radio signals weren't able to get out, either. After the exercise outdoors, all crews got together at Deer Creek Station for a "hotwash," in which they went over what happened, and what went right and wrong.
The pipeline runs one-eighth of a mile from Lutgen's home, and he said the drill served as good education for local landowners. "Up until now, we really didn't know what should happen in case we would hit the pipeline," he said. "Being a part of this was kind of fun, and gives me an idea of what to say if this ever happens in real life."

Currently it is the end of the dry season, a time of maintenance and repair. It's also a time of waiting...waiting for the first rains to hit. The land is harsh and dry, having gone up to 40 weeks without rain. I interviewed station owner Ron Croft about

Part two consists of: white water rafting, eating kangaroo, daydream island, whitsunday day sail, feeding sharks and stingrays, holding starfish, arriving at the cattle station.

Thirty minutes drive from Mt. Isa, West Leichhardt station is a 310,000 acre cattle station. Up here there are two seasons, the dry and the wet. Currently it is the end of the dry season, a time of maintenance and repair. It's also a time of waiting...waiting for the first rains to hit. The land is harsh and dry, having gone up to 40 weeks without rain. I interviewed station owner Ron Croft about life in the outback.

Australier lieben keine langen Namen.

After a good breakfast at the Waffle House in Tuscaloosa, we headed West to the Bent Creek Lodge. After signing in to the Lodge, we sighted in our rifles, unpacked, and dressed for hunting. The guides took us to our stands. Thane and Chris enjoyed a lot of activity, but no kills. I had a doe down in under an hour and another doe and her baby button buck come in right at the end of shooting light. It was awesome!

Live your dream, and travel to Australia's Northern Territory on a working holiday with German backpacker Martin Tashenmacher.
Martin works at Napperby Cattle Station in Australia's Red Centre, three hours from Alice Springs. Join Martin on his adventure holiday in the real cattle country, where stock is mustered on horseback and the garden provides fresh produce for dinner, and meet the characters with whom he works every day.
Like Martin, you can experience the Northern Territory while backpacking in Australia: http://en.travelnt.com/experience/backpacking/working-holidays.aspx

I shout, and make people lose the game via echoes. It's a 572m long tunnel under the river Scheldt in Antwerp. Designed by the local engineer, Emiel van Averbeke, and consists of a 572 metre tiled cylinder which crosses under the river at a depth of 32 metres, from the Sint Jansviet square, at the end of the Hoogstraat, in the city centre to the West bank. People walk and ride bikes along here all day long. Cool.

Part two consists of: white water rafting, eating kangaroo, daydream island, whitsunday day sail, feeding sharks and stingrays, holding starfish, arriving at the cattle station.
I went on the Contiki Tour called Reefs and Rainforests in Australia for 16 days in November (with a few extra days after). We started in Cairns and finished in Sydney. It was definitely a trip of a lifetime and I'm so glad I was able to travel with people from all over the world who I can now call my friends.

Geronimo - Sheppard
Leaves - SizzleBird
