There was a time when I wasn't sure whether this video would see the light of day. I just couldn't get this song to work. Usually my answer to that is to change songs, but I couldn't do that with this video. THIS SONG WAS MADE FOR JEAN HARLOW. Not literally, but come on!! AMERICAN BABY?! Jean Harlow was nicknamed "the baby" for most of her life- first by her mother, then by the MGM lot and her adoring public. In fact, the only inscription on Jean Harlow's grave is the words "Our Baby". I had planned to use this song for Marilyn Monroe (which is incredibly ironic, considering Harlow was Marilyn's childhood idol and the inspiration for her infamous onscreen persona). I'm glad I didn't...this song definitely suits Jean much better. Oh man, I can't put into words how much love I have for Jean Harlow. She was the original blonde bombshell and definitely one of the most beautiful people to ever grace the silver screen. She was bold, fearless and full of life- someone who wasn't afraid to embrace her sexuality. When you watch Jean Harlow in a film, her enthusiasm is such that you can't help but stare at her in amazement. She truly was one of a kind and, what she lacked in acting ability, she made up for in pure magnetism and raw sex appeal. In my opinion, Jean Harlow is one of the most tragic figures in Hollywood history. "Baby Jean" passed away at the mere age of 26 of uremic poisoning (as a result of kidney failure). This ailment is entirely treatable today which makes her untimely death even more tragic . When she passed away in 1937, she was at the height of her fame and popularity and was developing as an actress with every film she completed. Seriously, thinking about how young she was and the actress she could've become makes me so sad. I'm surprised I managed to get through five months of this video without once becoming a blubbering mess. That being said, show me the photo of William Powell crying inconsolably at her funeral and I will definitely lose it. They were such a beautiful couple, I only wish they would've had the chance to get married. If we're being completely honest, her death probably affects me more than any other Old Hollywood stars, just because she was so young and had so much to live for. She was such an extraordinary talent and human being- is it too much to ask that she could've grown old and had magnificent babies with William Powell. I like to give recommendations when I post actor and actress tributes, so, if you're interested in watching the films of Jean Harlow, I suggest you start with the following: "Red Dust" (the third of six pairings between herself and Clark Gable and without a doubt the best), "Libeled Lady", "Bombshell", "Reckless" and "Suzy". To be honest, her filmography is littered with extremely enjoyable films and you really can't go wrong. I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to post a new video. I'm hoping that in the coming months I'll be posting more and more. I have one particular video that is pretty close to being completed...and yes, it's about old movies. What can I say, the obsession just isn't going away lol. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this video and it encourages you to explore the work of this incredible actress.
