Lamerica(1994) is a wonderful movie from Gianni Amelio about Albania under the state of mass migration. The Albanian exodus due to the collapse of the communist regime in 1991 and the ensuing economic crisis has been the largest emigration movement in Europe since the population movements after World War II. Between 1989 and 2001, roughly 800000 people have migrated out of Albania, about 440000 of them settling in Greece, where Albanians make up 60% of immigrants. 350000 Albanians have migrated to Italy over the 1990s to 2000s.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was a military genius who brought modern warfare into the aerial age. Although opposed to attacking the United States and "awakening the sleeping giant," Admiral Yamamoto dedicated his life to the battle that devastated US morale and forced America into World War II. In an interesting historical departure, this fascinating documentary analyzes the attack on Pearl Harbor from the Japanese point of view and focuses on Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Japanese military mastermind who (though bitterly opposed) planned the attack on the US fleet anchored in Hawaii. If history is written by the victors, this view of the events of December 7, 1941, fills an important gap in the historical narrative of World War II. It is somewhat mis-titled, for it actually briefly covers the entire ill-fated Pacific campaign. It has a strong focus on Admiral Yamamoto himself--his foresight and vision as a military leader, and his reluctance to enter into a fight with the US It is interesting to hear a few words from the Japanese perspective, yet it seems that is all you get--a few words. There is little groundwork laid which might explain more fully Japan's reasons for attacking us. The SGI-based system design that ended up in the Nintendo 64 was originally offered to Tom Kalinske, then CEO of Sega of America by James H. Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics. SGI had recently bought out MIPS Technologies and the two companies had worked together to create a low-cost CPU/3D GPU combo that they thought would be ideal for the console market. A Sega of Japan hardware team was sent to evaluate the chip's capabilities and they found some faults which MIPS subsequently solved. However, Sega of Japan ultimately decided against SGI's design, apparently in part due to internal problems between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. In the early stages of development the Nintendo 64 was referred to by the code name "Project Reality"[3]. This monicker came from the speculation within Nintendo that the console could produce CGI on par with then-current supercomputers. When unveiled to the public on November 24, 1995, the console was introduced as the Nintendo Ultra 64[4] at the 7th Annual Shoshinkai Software Exhibition in Japan." - [wikipedia]

Artist: The Gun Club Album: Lucky Jim Release Date: 1994 Label: Alive Records The final Gun Club album, Lucky Jim was released in 1994, less than two years before frontman Jeffrey Lee Pierce's death at the age of 37 from complications due to liver disease. Pierce was a wasted, hollow-eyed ghost when he and the last incarnation of the Gun Club convened in Holland. Haunted from a trip to South Vietnam and Cambodia, Pierce wrote 11 new songs for the sessions and forged ahead despite the departure of longtime mate and fellow guitar slinger Kid Congo Powers, who left to concentrate on his own band, Congo-Norvell. With Pierce handling all the guitar chores, there's more overdubbing than there would normally be on a GC disc, but that's not of consequence. Perhaps the most telling track on the album is "A House Is Not a Home," an electric scorcher with Pierce telling his, and his band's, life story; by the end they were a band without a country, dismissed in America and met with indifference everywhere else except in the Netherlands. Pierce expresses his agony vocally, wailing above the guitar storm, riffing and stinging the center of the melody with razored blues fills and the odd James Burton lick. Much of the rest of the disc is nocturnal, including the odd lounge-y blues shuffle of "Cry to Me," with Pierce doing his very best Albert Collins in the intro. There is tenderness in all the pain on Lucky Jim; it's as if Pierce had accepted that this was always going to be his lot ...
