In his 1997 book Rocking the Classics, critic and musicologist Edward Macan notes that In the Court of the Crimson King "may be the most influential progressive rock album ever released". The album was remastered and re-released on vinyl and CD several times during the 1980s and 1990s. All of these versions were based on tape copies that were several generations removed from the originals. The original first-generation stereo master tapes were thought to be lost, but were finally located in a storage vault in 2003.

The Daily Telegraph 2015-03-30An epitaph (from Greek ἐπιτάφιον epitaphion "a funeral oration" from ἐπί epi "at, over" and τάφος taphos "tomb") is a short text honoring a deceased person, strictly speaking that is inscribed on their tombstone or plaque, but also used figuratively. Some are specified by the dead person beforehand, others chosen by those responsible for the burial. An epitaph may be in poem verse; poets have been known to compose their own epitaphs prior to their death, as W.B. Yeats did.
Most epitaphs are brief records of the family, and perhaps the career, of the deceased, often with an expression of love or respect - "beloved father of ..." - but others are more ambitious. From the Renaissance to the 19th century in Western culture, epitaphs for notable people became increasingly lengthy and pompous descriptions of their family origins, career, virtues and immediate family, often in Latin. However, the Laudatio Turiae, the longest known Ancient Roman epitaph exceeds almost all of these at 180 lines; it celebrates the virtues of a wife, probably of a consul.
As I sit and journal my life
I wish on my dying breathe
That we as one won a new day
for this world upon my death
Time sleeps on forever these words
the last words I'll say
Read my epitaph - heed my epitaph
Light shines on my death-bed
a last wish is to write
These secrets that I give you
are for all of mankind
Before I sleep on forever
heed these words, learn the truth
Read my epitaph - heed my epitaph
Reason foretold - season of old
My words will tell my world your hell
My words will tell my world your hell
Fearless ending darkness goodbye
Feeling empty my turn to die
Bravely ending my light goodbye
Feeling empty my turn to die
Read my epitaph - heed my epitaph
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams.
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams,
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
As silence drowns the screams.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying.
Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying.
Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Her close friends have gathered.
Lord, ain’t it a shame
Grieving together
Sharing the blame.
But when she was dying
Lord, we let her down.
There’s no use cryin’
It can’t help her now.
The party’s all over
Drink up and go home.
It’s too late to love her
And leave her alone.
Just say she was someone
Lord, so far from home
Whose life was so lonesome
She died all alone
Who dreamed pretty dreams
That never came true
Lord, why was she born
So black and blue?
Oh, why was she born
So black and blue?
Please don't leave me wanting more
I hope you never die
These's no need to say why
Just promise that you'll try
To give me all you can
I'll never ask for more
There's a new life thru the door
A cradle rocks and falls
Cements the melody
Our troubles passing
Through decaying, simple times
I'll tread on your tail with pride
C'est maintenant decide
I've nothing better
Please don't leave me wanting more
I hope you never die
There's no need to say why
She read your words on my TV, So much anger in her grief
A candle lit for you, And the words you wrote they sing with
So much truth, More than you could ever know
You lost your faith in something, How could you do this to us?
You went and sold yourself out, You lost your love in someone
How could you do this to us, You took the easy way out
I hear your voice now everyday, You sing much louder from your grave
All the questions why, And mysteries of why
The good must die young, Are lost now with your life
You lost your love in something, How could you do this to us
You went and sold yourself out, You lost your love in someone
Why did you take it out on us, You took the easy way out
She read your words on my TV, So much anger in her grief
And the candle lit for you, Burned out to soon before
Your star could shine, Now we will never know
Open your eyes
Don't you cry
"Days of glory
Left in the past
This perfect day
Will be the last
As time has come,
Forefathers blessed
Soon to join you
I'll lay to rest..."
(Written on a runestone from the year 997 A.C).
I hail the old northern gods
So help me thou mighty ones
Odin, tyr and thor
Lead me through my final war
Deep in my mind I
Sail across the sea
Though now I ride to
My final battlefield
I'll meet my destiny
Hail to our gods
To valhall we ride
With our swords held high
And today I think I have had enough. All of my yesterdays seem a little thin. So I suppose I will give up on tomorrow, on tomorrow. And I just watch, and I just wait, I just wait and see. And if I have to hear, one more time, "It's never enough" I.... and if I have to hear, one more time, "It's never enough" I swear, I will give up on everything this far. Close the book on this. Lay my down for the last time. And all I ask of you, is that you write my epitaph, that you write my epitaph and I, I will leave you all, all of my passion. You know it burns. And to you I leave, everything this far. All of these lessons I have learned, all of these lessons I have learned. And to you I leave all of my passion. Cause you know that it burns. Cause you know that it burns. And to you I leave, all of these lessons I have learned up til now. I have grown tired of today and I guarantee, I'm already sick of tomorrow, of tomorrow. So I, I think I'll just give up on, give up on tomorrow. Just you watch, just you wait and see. Just you watch, just you wait and see. Just you watch, just you wait and see. Just you watch, just you wait and see.
Epitaph
Starry eyed explorer found another flag to drop
In the form of loose pills to conquer her America.
One straight to the head; a tight grasp towards her pocket:
An archetype for innocence with diamond eye sockets.
No longer interested in soft words or sonnets,
Only cares about the war she's lost and when she'll find her coffin.
Will any words be etched in the granite to whisper her legacy?
A legend in her own terms utilizing Athena's jealousy.
It's sad to see the day when the sky falls like this:
Clouds retreat to avoid the crash but the comets will not miss.
In the crater we will find a body if we're lucky
Label her a misfit and another helpless junkie.
But I can see better, past black and white shades
Into the gray area in which her mind lays
I don't think I can save her, but I hope that I'm led to
That little lonely girl just begging to be rescued
You don't have to go through this yourself,
All you've got to do is ask for help.
This fairy's broken wings don't flap like they used to,
Writing diaries in angels' dust but the meanings misconstrued.
And after her pen bled all the ink that she could use
She starting using her own blood to write the feelings that she knew.
Now the page is full and there's so much left to write.
Carves the meaning of her story on her skin and swears that she's alright.
It makes me see the world in a completely different light,
I hate to see you hurt yourself but whatever helps you sleep at night..
It's scary asking all the places that you've been
When rings aren't the only things that are piercing your skin...
You're having dreams now, so there's progress to attempt
The road to recovery is plagued with hurdles and missteps.
I am here to catch you if you ever start to trip
And help guide your arrow towards all the targets that you've missed.
You can ask for anything, I'll do what I can
So don't be hesitant if you need a helping hand.
You don't have to go through this yourself,
all you've got to do is ask for help
The funeral was silent, sky was overcast
Cast over cloudy hearts and a less than sunny past.
Sent shivers down our backs as wind whipped our spine
Standing shoulder to shoulder in a large circular line.
Preacher said words from a bible, every one read
If God loves all his children then you have been adopted
Placed in a foster home your self esteem depleted,
Practically given up at birth, now I hope that you can see that
The mistakes that they made were much more than monumental
You are living proof that life isn't always gentle...
But you have your own touch have so much left to give
So many things to say and so much more life to live
We buried the body so nobody could see
The shell of what once was and who you used to be
And all you did was smile as we made our way home
Await my breath
the colours blend to extract
nutrition
from black and white
And off we go
into the colour saturated part of you
count me in
the fraud you're planning
Now the peasant lies still
for he knows the lot
knows why and when and whom to blame
Set the controls for pleasant dreams
speak the liars tongue
to wake the ancient gods
Set the controls for higher grounds
Trust me to fetter my thoughts
Count me in
That epitaph
met my eye through the wilderness
now the crescent lies still
for it covers the lot
sweet saturation
when colours leave no space to fill
I dare you, count me in
count me in the fraud you're planning
That epitaph
met my eye through the wilderness
as a monument of that fraud
colours leave the spaces in shades of grey
and those salty tastes
that labels the dissidents
Morning mist
one freezing night awaits your death
salty taste
lures that child to lick
that child lies still for it knows the lot
Final solution for the colourless
and I'm off
I'll count you all in
That epitaph
one freezing night awaits your death
colours spawned by dust
recall the saltier taste of hate
It creeps around me all the time
This restless feelin' on my mind
Confusin' and abusin' me
So I won't turn around to see
What I should do instead
Be alive
I look at myself
I disappear
I can't do that
But it's such an easy way out
It bruises me when I complain
It changes me that way again
What I should do instead
Be alive
I look at myself
I disappear
I can't do that
But it's such an easy way out
But I don't understand
How you do
The things that you do
So easily
You can't do that
My love cast into the sewer
Cries for revenge when I sleep
This is all that matters yet
There is only half of me
Now you're fighting for a cause
You don't even know it's true
Full of pride and dedication
Yet there's only half of you
Ruined castle in the air
Music weeps behind the door
Tears are flowing to the sewer
Recollection of past affections
Fading gradually into obscurity and confusion
Leaving only awareness of a dismal present
And a hopeless future
It's dark all the time now
And the emptiness within me has become unbearable
I can't stand this pain any longer
Nor the crushing headaches and nausea
I have no sentiment for a worthless world
And a meaningless life
No trust in faith or salvation
Only a deep bitterness and frustration
Above all storms and torments
Darkness sets beautifully
Across an endless sky
Leaves fall in the autumn
of lives that appear
to be worthless to some,
utmost ignorant.
Expectations shift in the eye
of the beholder...behold.
Tears drop from the eye
of lives paled
as jealousy fools
a mind distorted.
Expectations shift in the eye
of the beholder...behold.
One wishes existence
to be of fulfillment,
but leaves bend to the will
of winds blowing.
To foresee the end
of a soul...Epitaph.
Claim to foresee
the end of a soul.
Premature Epitaph.
[Solo: Muenzner]
To foresee the end
To those I love, I'm sorry.
But at night I dream I'm dying.
And I want it all, I want it all.
To those I love I'm sorry.
But at night I dream I'm falling.
And I want it all, I want it all.
And at night I dream I'm flying.
And at night I dream I'm dying.
But I want it all, I want it all.
And at night I dream I'm falling.
And at night the end is calling.
But I want it all, I want it all.
Endless nights, endless days.
It always feels this way.
So I want it all, I want it all.
To those I love I'm sorry.
At night I dream of wanting.
And I'll have it all, I'll have it all.
To those I love, I'm sorry.
During the day I'm drowning.
And I'll have it all, I'll have it all.
To those I love I'm sorry.

Die Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die,
Die, Diedum
Searching the water, follow a line
Rose petals ripple round a swimming swan
When god was lonely, song was sung
A tune to echo, like a dying sun
Die Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die,
Die, Diedum
Find me no reason, teach me no word
Leaves settle slowly, when the autumn comes
When god was lonely, song was sung
A tune to echo, like a dying sun
Die Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die,
Die, Diedum
Die Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die,

Wait for the season, rushed by the wind
For we'll do battle, when spring has come
When god was lonely, song was sung
A tune to echo, like a dying, dying sun
Die Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die, Die, Die Die,

Rhayader ferries many stranded soldiers to safety until at last he is hit, and the Snow Goose is seen circling low over the spot where the little boat has gone down.
bad luck just weaves through the city,
but it's keeping away from us
we move at a crawl through the traffic
and water street is humming along
with me and cecilia singing
and banging on the dashboard in time,
we sing the words on her father's gravestone
and he's there in the humid light...singing:
don't let the bastards grind you down
good luck's in town for the weekend
so we stumble around until dawn
daylight just melts through the narrows
and those morning birds are humming along
with me and cecilia singing
and stamping on the asphalt to prove
we are the children of strength and of vigor
we were born in the morning blue...singing:
don't let the bastards grind you down
when you're all, 'Jesus Murphy'
and 'Ave Maria'
and 'send me the courage'
and 'let me be delivered'
cause there's devils among us
there's devils living among us
some have not got their teeth up
and some are ashes and near-dust
and they're riding the freeways
and they're locking their front door at dusk
and they're raising their families
and they're raising their fingers at us
but this is a good town
this here is a heavy ancient thing
this is a new land
this here is a thing they'll never see
when they're all 'Jesus Murphy'
and 'Ave Maria'
and 'send me the courage'
and 'let me be delivered'
don't let the bastards grind you down
bad luck just weaves through the city
Isolation freezes my life, coldness grips my heart
Trapped within a world, a world apart.
Desolate am I, a tempest raging silently.
Lost a barren adrift at sea.
Catatonic state, it sharpens life's depressing edge
The clamor draws me closer to the ledge
As I gaze upon this burning world I curse this life.
A life through which I'm hurled
Lies, lies upon this side and that
Truthless violence deception mourned by the wise.
Thousands of voices drowning out his own
In a popular torrent of lies upon lies
Turn to stone.
So intense the pain that has crawled
From the bleeding corpse of pleasure.
That feeds the worm the writhes
Inside my brain.
In the deep of night it stirs again
In the heart of the sleeper,
From the crack of dawn I wake to curse
The rising of the sun.
Every life is built on hope
Now my dreams have surely passed,
Inner voices haunt my numbered days
Darkness calls me with her laughs
Torn between life and death inertia
Fills my soul.
No will to be nor pride to care
Reapers take your toll.
Strangers cast a menacing glance as
Existence I defy.
Shatter their dream like world I'm not
Afraid to die
Omen bird soars the desert land to the castle
Of idolence, there lies the shadow of a man.
See the colored flowers and marble towers
They fade to brown
Like the unknown inscribed in stone
He's abandoned, abandoned flesh and bones
He's lost in silence swallowed in vastness
Drowned in the depths of a meaningless
Cruel, cruel fate.
Why dost thou mock thy servant so?
When in my heart fledgling love Dost earnest grow.
The boundaries of hate, and love,
Are too blurred to understand.
Where must I, a mortal man,
Go to see God's plan?
For happiness on earthly planes is but a hollow shade!
So easily brought crashing down to horrid angry flames.
And thou dost flaunt my stolen love
Before my very eyes.
And O, but fate,
Malignant Hate:
Mark my grave, and call the winds of torment
Oh, remember me now, and feed the wind with your dreams
Feel my name, and feel my blood in your veins
Now the tide will turn, I will live on through you
Mark my name upon the flesh you create
No, don't cry for me, my son, myself
I am waiting my son, on the threshold to the other side
Cannot tell you what is here
What I see now is beyond your mind
I am formless, but I feel
All the questions burning in your head
Learn your lesson and never grieve
For there is no beginning, and there is no end
I'm standing at the door of time, I see life complete
Truth is never what is seems
Bodies wither, but your mind still dreams
No one ever can rest in peace
Until they've learned the game and become light to darkness
See me shine
I'm standing at the door of time, I see life complete
Oh father where will I be when I meet my time?
You will pass on and follow me, into the sanctuary
I am in the mirror, see my reflection in the stars
And as you search for truth, so I will shine to spur you on
Spur you on
Bathe in the pure truth of my light
Time is an illusion, death is not conclusion
All those who seek the truth will questions still remaining
Now listen closely, and all will be so clear
I am a messenger, a bringer of light from the other side
So chosen now to teach while drifting between lives
Drifting, drifting
THE WALL ON WHICH THE PROPHETS WROTE
IS CRACKING AT THE SEAMS.
UPON THE INSTRUMENTS IF DEATH
THE SUNLIGHT BRIGHTLY GLEAMS.
WHEN EVERY MAN IS TORN APART
WITH NIGHTMARES AND WITH DREAMS,
WILL NO ONE LAY THE LAUREL WREATH
AS SILENCE DROWNS THE SCREAMS.
BETWEEN THE IRON GATES OF FATE,
THE SEEDS OF TIME WERE SOWN,
AND WATERED BY THE DEEDS OF THOSE
WHO KNOW AND WHO ARE KNOWN;
KNOWLEDGE IS A DEADLY FRIEND
WHEN NO ONE SETS THE RULES.
THE FATE OF ALL MANKIND I SEE
IS IN THE HANDS OF FOOLS.
CONFUSION WILL BE MY EPITAPH.
AS I CRAWL A CRACKED AND BROKEN PATH
IF WE MAKE IT WE CAN ALL SIT BACK
AND LAUGH.
BUT I FEAR TOMORROW I'LL BE CRYING,
YES I FEAR TOMORROW I'LL BE CRYING.

[Jise One]
Jise was a scapegoat with staggered tear hype
Snipe life work on the street poles
with jailstripes born spic with temples of dynamite
Strolling turnpikes troopers will take your life
Jise died a week ago, stealing some rice
It's kinda trife without a wife and kids
He landed on skid road facing a bid
with blood on his bib, manslauthered his wiz
He should've did the pride away,
slid to hustle legit
He grabbed dreams with mits, losing a steady grip
Without the wits you're in shit
Within the pits of sleaze hell, spit fits
of hunger split his own wig
Lava leaking from top lid, shades of grey coat
his atmosphere, to rid 'em of the positives
moves lived
He broke grid, shifty biz the greenback sense
Making a mends, with pocket cents
He smoke sin, robbing ladies and gents
He rather kick it on corners with sauna
sources of hatred
Patriot of the jungles of N.Y.
he never made it
Faded by the crossfires of gimmick
He lost his image, LSD marking the scrimmage
He'll never finish, forget it down in the village
with saks of tray size
Selling to vintage niggas with cashroll
missing the whole prize
He sizing up the shorty with splash expertise
Within his eyes there's no ease, don't ask why
She's cuty tease, cheese hag sittin on genital
sore case, with all types of insecurities
Get your knees and get these the D's
and mom dukes discuss the where abouts of young man
Who ran it contraband styles
with dreams of rocking summerjam (damn)
It's kinda sad that we blew out this concept (damn)
It's kinda sad that we blew out this concept!
[Chorus 2x:]
Street life equals hard times plus
hard crimes divided by death
Prison multiplied by life wasted
Swallowed by the Earth before you could even taste it

"I've seen the hood raised brothers"
"killed too many of us"
Paint me a room where I can dream
Dream of a world that I used to see
Paint me a window, soft and defined
And flood yellow light
Through the open blinds
It's somewhere, hidden from view
I've seen your hearts - I've seen your mind
Within your presence I go blind
I've seen your souls - I've seen your cries
Eye for an eye and I hope to die
I've seen your emblems - I've seen your signs
I've seen your passions, cross over lines
I've seen your fears - I've seen your hate
In blissful ignorance you seal your fate.
[Chorus:]
What's your excuse, are you confused?
On what grounds, oh, I just don't get it
Can you explain why you're causing pain, is this what's sane?
How do you rationalize your wicked manners?
I've seen your anger – I've seen your lust
I've seen blood and guts – I'm so disgusted
I've seen your hopes – I've seen your dreams
Refined malice, they're worse than greed.
I've seen your heroes – I've seen your foes.
You're all insane, so.
I've seen your present repeat your past
I see no future, nothing learned, nothing lasts!
[Chorus:]
What's your excuse, are you confused?
On what grounds, don't know why, but I just don't get it
Can you explain why you're causing pain?
How do you rationalize your wicked manners?
I'll make you bleed.
Oh, what's in your mind?
How can you smile?
Is it your lack of remorse?
(Written by King Crimson in 1969)
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments if death
The sunlight brightly gleams.
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams,
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
As silence drowns the screams.
Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back
and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying,
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
When silence drowns the screams?
Confusion will be my epitaph
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known
Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools
Confusion will be my epitaph
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
The old man's sitting there, his head bowed down
Every now and then he'll take a look around
And his eyes reflect the memory-pain of years gone by
He can't regain nostalgic dreams he'll never see again
With trembling hands, he wipes a tear
Many fall like rain, there's one for every year
And his life laid out so clearly now, life that's brought death
So nearly now life once he clung to dearly lets go
But spare a thought as you pass him by
Take a closer look and you'll say
He's our tomorrow, just as much as we are his yesterday
A lonely grave, and soon forgot
Only wind and leaves lament his mournful song
Yet they shout his epitaph out clear
For anyone who's passing near
It names the person lying here as you
I'm floating away
To find my innocence
I'm drifting away
To find my peace
Arrow to coal
Burns through the soul
Wither away
Summer to fall
In my weakness I let you see
through me
You felt my warm skin and
left me cold
Desperately searching in the
dark for you
Breathe new life in me
Take me back and un-dream
this nightmare
Forsake this bitter land and
have me taste you once more
Find me
Howling storm strangles
my call
Tears fall for thee
Embrace the dark in me
Wash me away
I'll find my peace
Sinking so deep
I watch the mourners weep
My grave cold and bleak
Forevermore
In my...
Take me back...
Water so pure
Coarse through the soul
Wash me ashore
Wash me ashore
I'm floating away
To find my innocence
I'm drifting away
To find my peace
In my...
Take me back...
Requiem aeterna dona eis,
et lux perpetua luceat eis,
Exaudi orationem meam;
ad te omnis caro veniet.
Requiem aeternam dona eis,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Eternal rest grant unto them
and let perpetual light shine upon them
Her my prayer; to you shall all flesh come.
Eternal rest grant unto them,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
The stillness and the cold
Draws me into shadows torn
Wasted tears for me
Still whispers within
The emptiness won't let go
Wandering towards the precious unknown
I'm longing for the dark cold silence
To take hold of my soul
This is the end of me
This is the end of me
I dream of escaping this life
The void you filled, I never gave up
I'm longing for the dark cold silence
To take hold hold of my soul
Lonely wanderer, in shadow's grasp
Headed for the Darkland I'll be
Where dreamless nights are forever
I'm waiting for the end
This is the end
I know you hear what I hear
I put speakers on your brain
I know you see what I see
Because I wrote it on your face
I'll feed off your misfortune
Until there's nothing left to save
I'll bury you on sunday
And put roses on your grave
Set in stone right now
It's only a matter of time
Your never going to take me alive
Going to find another way survive
It's do or die
It's me against the world
Your never going to take me alive
Going to find another way to survive
It's do or die
It's me against the world
I know you feel what I feel
Because we're all built the same
And in the end there's nothing
Only fingerprints and pain
The echoes of misfortune
Nothing can be saved
Bury me on sunday
And put roses on my grave
Set in stone right now
It's only a matter of time
Your never going to take me alive
Going to find another way survive
It's do or die
It's me against the world
Your never going to take me alive
Going to find another way to survive
It's do or die
It's me against the world
It's getting complicated staying alive
With all this love and hatred bottled inside
And I'm bottled inside
It's just me against the world
It's just me against the world
It's just me against the world
It's just me against the world
Your never going to take me alive
Going to find another way survive
It's do or die
It's me against the world
Your never going to take me alive
Going to find another way to survive
It's do or die
