Fragile Territories is a laser and sound installation by Robert Henke.
Complex visual shapes emerge, drawn on a 30 meter wide wall by four fast moving laser beams, constantly changing motions of pure light. Sounds - transformed recordings of a piano - fill the room, sometimes in sync with the visual aspects and sometimes running simply in parallel. Whilst everything is floating and happening in rather long intervals, a constant black shadow is moving in front of the projection, from left to right, every 4.2 seconds, like a giant blade of a windmill, a negative object that contrasts the bright projection by muting it where it appears. It is not only obscuring the image but also dampening the sounds at its current position and emitting a low frequency noise itself. A dark strong force that puts the rest in an infinitely distant background.
The video has been recorded on the last day of the exhibition, on January 6 2013. Sound is taken directly from the audio interface and edited and layered to provide a good impression of the atmosphere in the exhibition space. While the installation runs, the visual and the auditive component are created in realtime using statistic and stochastic algorithms. As a result, the duration of the work is infinite and it never repeats. Due to the complex nature of the code and its embedded randomness, it is quite impossible to predict future states. However, there are rules within the program that ensure certain states do not let the installation 'explode' or 'fade away' but instead always guides it back to a more or less stable state after it reaches certain boundaries. The installation runs on three Mac Mini computers, two for the four lasers and one for sound, code written in MaxMSP.

Robert Henke
Robert B. Henke (born 1969) is a German computer music artist working in the fields of audiovisual installation, music and performance. He was born in Munich, Germany, and lives in Berlin.
Coming from an engineering background, Henke is fascinated by the beauty of technical objects. Developing his own instruments and algorithms is an integral part of his creative process. His materials are computer generated sound and images, field recordings, photography and light; transformed, re-arranged and modulated by mathematical rules, real time interaction and controlled random operations. Many of his works use multiple channels of audio or are specifically conceived for unique locations and their individual properties. For the past few years, he has been exploring the artistic usage of high power lasers in his installations and performances.
Robert Henke is also a co-developer of the music software Ableton Live, alongside Gerhard Behles.
Since 1995 he has produced electronic music under the name of Monolake, (originally founded in collaboration with Gerhard Behles).

Robert
The name Robert is a Germanic given name, from Proto-Germanic *χrōþi- "fame" and *berχta- "bright". Compare Old Dutch Robrecht and Old High German Hrodebert (a compound of hruod "fame, glory" and berht "bright"). It is also in use as a surname.
After becoming widely used in Continental Europe it entered England in its Old French form Robert, where an Old English cognate form (Hrēodbēorht, Hrodberht, Hrēodbēorð, Hrœdbœrð, Hrœdberð) had existed before the Norman Conquest. The feminine version is Roberta. The Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish form is Roberto.

Fragile Territories is a laser and sound installation by Robert Henke.
Complex visual shapes emerge, drawn on a 30 meter wide wall by four fast moving laser beams, constantly changing motions of pure light. Sounds - transformed recordings of a piano - fill the room, sometimes in sync with the visual aspects and sometimes running simply in parallel. Whilst everything is floating and happening in rather long intervals, a constant black shadow is moving in front of the projection, from left to right, every 4.2 seconds, like a giant blade of a windmill, a negative object that contrasts the bright projection by muting it where it appears. It is not only obscuring the image but also dampening the sounds at its current position and emitting a low frequency noise itself. A dark strong force that puts the rest in an infinitely distant background.
The video has been recorded on the last day of the exhibition, on January 6 2013. Sound is taken directly from the audio interface and edited and layered to provide a good impression of the atmosphere in the exhibition space. While the installation runs, the visual and the auditive component are created in realtime using statistic and stochastic algorithms. As a result, the duration of the work is infinite and it never repeats. Due to the complex nature of the code and its embedded randomness, it is quite impossible to predict future states. However, there are rules within the program that ensure certain states do not let the installation 'explode' or 'fade away' but instead always guides it back to a more or less stable state after it reaches certain boundaries. The installation runs on three Mac Mini computers, two for the four lasers and one for sound, code written in MaxMSP.

In September of 2012 Dubspot visited Seattle's famous Decibel Festival, where we caught up with electronic music pioneer Robert Henke (better known as Monolake, co-developer of Ableton Live) to discuss the past, present and future of Ableton, sound synthesis, music composition, and more.
In our interview the co-creator of Live gave a brief overview of how the program was conceived and discussed the importance of the more recent development of Max For Live, which allows users to program in Cycling 74's Max directly inside Ableton.
We also visited his Decibel Festival workshop, Sound Spaces and Machines, where he compared music synthesis and physical modeling, and talked about why physical modeling is important in the creation of expressive music. He also emphasized the importance of simplicity and minimalism in the production process, while delivering a sobering message about the overuse of compression in electronic music which he calls "evil".

In September of 2012 Dubspot visited Seattle's famous Decibel Festival, where we caught up with electronic music pioneer Robert Henke (better known as Monolake, co-developer of Ableton Live) to discuss the past, present and future of Ableton, sound synthesis, music composition, and more.
In our interview the co-creator of Live gave a brief overview of how the program was conceived and discussed the importance of the more recent development of Max For Live, which allows users to program in Cycling 74's Max directly inside Ableton.
We also visited his Decibel Festival workshop, Sound Spaces and Machines, where he compared music synthesis and physical modeling, and talked about why physical modeling is important in the creation of expressive music. He also emphasized the importance of simplicity and minimalism in the production process, while delivering a sobering message about the overuse of compression in electronic music which he calls "evil".

Complex visual shapes emerge, drawn on a 30 meter wide wall by four fast moving laser beams, constantly changing motions of pure light. Sounds - transformed recordings of a piano - fill the room, sometimes in sync with the visual aspects and sometimes running simply in parallel. Whilst everything is floating and happening in rather long intervals, a constant black shadow is moving in front of the projection, from left to right, every 4.2 seconds, like a giant blade of a windmill, a negative object that contrasts the bright projection by muting it where it appears. The video has been recorded on the last day of the exhibition, on January 6 2013. Sound is taken directly from the audio interface and edited and layered to provide a good impression of the atmosphere in the exhibition space. While the installation runs, the visual and the auditive component are created in realtime using statistic and stochastic algorithms. As a result, the duration of the work is infinite and it never repeats. Due to the complex nature of the code and its embedded randomness, it is quite impossible to predict future states. However, there are rules within the program that ensure certain states do not let the installation 'explode' or 'fade away' but instead always guides it back to a more or less stable state after it reaches certain boundaries. The installation runs on three Mac Mini computers, two for the four lasers and one for sound, code written in MaxMSP.

into the artistic and technical aspects of his recent audiovisual
works. Using his latest installation Fragile Territories as an
example, he will talk about ideas, happy incidents, processes,
compromises, logistics and collaboration. Henke will discuss
the role of technology for his art and his self defined state as
artist-engineer. He will also provide an outlook on his future
plans and elaborate on how they are influenced by his previous
works.
