Topology, sometimes called rubber sheet geometry, is an important and young branch of Maths: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/surfaces-and-topology If we count the number of vertices, v, on a cube, v = 8, number of edges e = 12, and number of faces f = 6, then v¬ -- e + f = 2. The same is true for a tetrahedron where v¬ = 4, e = 6 and f = 4. In fact, the mathematician Leonhard Euler obtained the amazing result that v¬ -- e + f = 2 for a wide class of polyhedrons. This theorem of Euler is a result in topology, a subject which tries to find those properties of geometrical objects that are invariant under continuous deformation -- a tetrahedron can be changed in this way into a cube. Mathematics is patterns and logic, imagination and rigor. It is a way of seeing and a way of thinking. Math Mornings is a series of public lectures aimed at bringing the joy and variety of mathematics to students and their families. Speakers from Yale and elsewhere will talk about aspects of mathematics that they find fascinating or useful. The talks will usually be accessible to students from 7th grade and up, although occasionally some familiarity with high-school subjects will be helpful. Math Mornings lectures will occur on three Sundays each semester at Yale University. The inaugural lecture for the series was given by Yale Mathematics Professor Yair Minsky on November 4, 2012 who spoke "Topology: The Shapes of Space and the Spaces of Shapes." Topology & Geometry LECTURE 01 Part 01

This video forms part of a course on Topology & Geometry by Dr Tadashi Tokieda held at AIMS South Africa in 2014. Topology and geometry have become useful tools in many areas of physics and engineering, and of course permeate every corner of research in today's mathematics. They often help us make fresh progress precisely because they are very unlike, and complement,traditional differential-equation-based methods. Yet they are almost never taught to students outside advanced pure mathematics. This course teaches a minimal amount of topology and geometry of maximal usefulness in applications, relying on pictures and avoiding abstract algebraic machinery. The motto of the course is: look at the generic situation, spot invariants, solve your problem by deformation. I hope that the course will train you to THINK IN PICTURES. Note: Some of you may have studied point-set topology (metric and topological spaces, continuous maps, compactness, etc.). The content of this course is different: it is usually called algebraic and differential topology. This course is designed so that familiarity with point-set topology is unnecessary.

The lectures, filmed by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), were unavailable for years but recently resurfaced. With Simons Foundation funding, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute has produced these digital reproductions as a resource for the mathematics and science communities. Milnor was awarded the Abel Prize in 2011 for his work in topology, geometry and algebra. We begin our study of point set topology (which is also known as elementary topology and general topology) with the definition of an open set. We also look at the definitions of closed sets, the discrete topology, the indiscreet topology, closed-finite topologies and T0 and T1 spaces. We also prove a fundamental result classifying closed sets.
