Up until now businesses have had to sort all their rubbish for recycling but many didn't have the time, which is why much of it ended up in landfill. However, help is now at hand!
In Exeter, there is a place called Envirohub, which is the base for Devon Contract Waste. This company has started a 'Zero to Landfill' campaign because they would like to see everything recycled so landfill wouldn't be needed anymore. To help with this, they have spent over four million pounds on a fantastic new waste sorting machine which means businesses won't have to sort their rubbish anymore.
This machine is huge: it's over ten metres high, covers the same area as one football pitches and it can sort up to 300 tonnes of rubbish per day -- that's the same weight as thirty seven and a half full size elephants.
So how does it work? Let's go and see it in action!
Rubbish arrives at Envirohub from all around the county in dustcarts, front-loaders and wheelie bins, where it is all emptied out on the floor. Then it is lifted by this mechanical grabber and dumped into the hopper where it is shredded down into smaller pieces.
From the shredder, the rubbish goes up this belt to a big drum called a trommel screen. This tumbles the rubbish to remove all the soil and dust which gets turned into a fuel called Refuse-Derived Fuel product -- or RDF for short. Nothing gets wasted here!Everything else continues on to here. This is called a ballistic separator and it walks everything upwards, but only the flat material makes it to the top. The three dimensional items can't manage the climb and fall back onto another line below.
The flat stuff now falls onto a belt which goes under the first optical sorter. This is a line of small cameras that can recognise the different types of rubbish. This one is set to 'see' soft plastic film and when it sees some approaching, it triggers a jet of air which hits the item as it crosses the end of the belt, blowing it on to another belt behind. It's very fast but watch closely and you'll see the plastic flying off. That's amazing!
This rubbish left on the belt drops down to another below. It then passes the second optical sorter, which is set to 'see' all paper and card products. It's very important that nothing else gets through so just to make doubly sure there are two people inspecting it.
Remember the 3D stuff that didn't make it to the top of the line earlier? Let's go and see what happened to it. Here it is, going past a very powerful magnet which attracts all ferrous metal -- that's metals like iron and steel which are magnetic. Everything else won't be attracted by the magnet so goes on to this eddy current machine which removes all non-ferrous metals such as aluminium -- things like drink cans. All the metals are collected in the skips below.
The non-metallic material left on the belt then goes twice past another optical sorter. The first time it puts all plastic on one side and the second time it puts all paper and card on the other. Anything left over will also go into the fuel product or RDF we mentioned before.
Under the machine are all these bays where the different materials end up. The contents are eventually baled and wrapped like this ready to be transported.

So where does it all go? The metal will be sent to be melted down so it can be made into other metal products. Paper will be recycled into tissue such as toilet roll and hand towels. Plastics are recycled into new products; some obvious ones such as carrier bags and bin liners, but also fleeces, umbrellas, children's toys and even car bumpers. Card is generally shipped to China for recycling. This goes on ships that have delivered products from China into the UK, and need to return anyway, so it is reasonably environmentally friendly.

In 2003, the local government in Kamikatsu, Japan decided to require that all residents comply with a new, rigorous recycling program - perhaps the most rigorous in the world.
Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan.
Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer.
All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors.
And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items.
At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. "It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea," says resident, Hatsue Katayama. "If you get used to it, it becomes normal."
Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste.

Landfills are no longer a viable option for construction and demolition (C & D) wastes, which account for more than a third of the waste stream generated in Massachusetts. USGBC's LEED certification program, which many clients, architects and municipalities require, awards up to three points for waste recycling efforts. Recycling is now the mandated and preferred solutions to C & D debris disposal. Waste Solutions Inc of Marshfield, MA is the New England leader in C & D debris disposal.

Boulder County Recycling Center, Boulder, Colorado presents "Single-stream Recycling-Leading the Way to Zero Waste." A 15:15 minute video offering an in-depth look at the single-stream recycling process at the Boulder County Recycling Center. The tour begins at the curbside recycling bin and follows the single-stream materials to the tipping floor of the Boulder County Recycling Center. Mr. Can, the star of the show, continues the recycling journey into the high-tech world of single-stream processing. Recycling is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.
There are some ISO standards relating to recycling such as ISO 15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management control of recycling practice.
Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics. Although similar in effect, the composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste – such as food or garden waste – is not typically considered recycling. Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection center or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing.

Food waste is a major problem for any organisation that produces it. It's notoriously difficult to process and dispose of safely and efficiently and is the most likely waste stream to contaminate other waste fractions. Most waste streams are relatively easy to recycle. Glass, plastic, aluminium and even metals can be recycled into useful by-products. But not so food waste. By utilising IMC's WasteStation food waste processor, many of these problems are removed or reduced leading to large savings in many areas. Food waste typically represents around 40% of total commercial catering waste. Of this 40%, approximately 77% is liquid. WasteStation grinds the food waste into fine particles, these particles feed directly into the built-in dewatering system. Through centrifugal action, the WasteStation forces out the excess liquid from the macerated waste. This "grey water" is fed directly to drain, the resulting solid fraction of the food waste is collected in small, easily managed, lidded bins, ready for onward processing.

Up until now businesses have had to sort all their rubbish for recycling but many didn't have the time, which is why much of it ended up in landfill. However, help is now at hand!
In Exeter, there is a place called Envirohub, which is the base for Devon Contract Waste. This company has started a 'Zero to Landfill' campaign because they would like to see everything recycled so landfill wouldn't be needed anymore. To help with this, they have spent over four million pounds on a fantastic new waste sorting machine which means businesses won't have to sort their rubbish anymore.
This machine is huge: it's over ten metres high, covers the same area as one football pitches and it can sort up to 300 tonnes of rubbish per day -- that's the same weight as thirty seven and a half full size elephants.
So how does it work? Let's go and see it in action!
Rubbish arrives at Envirohub from all around the county in dustcarts, front-loaders and wheelie bins, where it is all emptied out on the floor. Then it is lifted by this mechanical grabber and dumped into the hopper where it is shredded down into smaller pieces.
From the shredder, the rubbish goes up this belt to a big drum called a trommel screen. This tumbles the rubbish to remove all the soil and dust which gets turned into a fuel called Refuse-Derived Fuel product -- or RDF for short. Nothing gets wasted here!Everything else continues on to here. This is called a ballistic separator and it walks everything upwards, but only the flat material makes it to the top. The three dimensional items can't manage the climb and fall back onto another line below.
The flat stuff now falls onto a belt which goes under the first optical sorter. This is a line of small cameras that can recognise the different types of rubbish. This one is set to 'see' soft plastic film and when it sees some approaching, it triggers a jet of air which hits the item as it crosses the end of the belt, blowing it on to another belt behind. It's very fast but watch closely and you'll see the plastic flying off. That's amazing!
This rubbish left on the belt drops down to another below. It then passes the second optical sorter, which is set to 'see' all paper and card products. It's very important that nothing else gets through so just to make doubly sure there are two people inspecting it.
Remember the 3D stuff that didn't make it to the top of the line earlier? Let's go and see what happened to it. Here it is, going past a very powerful magnet which attracts all ferrous metal -- that's metals like iron and steel which are magnetic. Everything else won't be attracted by the magnet so goes on to this eddy current machine which removes all non-ferrous metals such as aluminium -- things like drink cans. All the metals are collected in the skips below.
The non-metallic material left on the belt then goes twice past another optical sorter. The first time it puts all plastic on one side and the second time it puts all paper and card on the other. Anything left over will also go into the fuel product or RDF we mentioned before.
Under the machine are all these bays where the different materials end up. The contents are eventually baled and wrapped like this ready to be transported.
What an amazing machine!
So where does it all go? The metal will be sent to be melted down so it can be made into other metal products. Paper will be recycled into tissue such as toilet roll and hand towels. Plastics are recycled into new products; some obvious ones such as carrier bags and bin liners, but also fleeces, umbrellas, children's toys and even car bumpers. Card is generally shipped to China for recycling. This goes on ships that have delivered products from China into the UK, and need to return anyway, so it is reasonably environmentally friendly.

At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer.
All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors.
And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items.
At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. "It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea," says resident, Hatsue Katayama. "If you get used to it, it becomes normal."
Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste.

Most waste streams are relatively easy to recycle. Glass, plastic, aluminium and even metals can be recycled into useful by-products. But not so food waste.
By utilising IMC's WasteStation food waste processor, many of these problems are removed or reduced leading to large savings in many areas.
Food waste typically represents around 40% of total commercial catering waste. Of this 40%, approximately 77% is liquid.
WasteStation grinds the food waste into fine particles, these particles feed directly into the built-in dewatering system.
Through centrifugal action, the WasteStation forces out the excess liquid from the macerated waste.
This "grey water" is fed directly to drain, the resulting solid fraction of the food waste is collected in small, easily managed, lidded bins, ready for onward processing.

The figures are breathtaking, to the point of being on the verge of miraculous. ABAL, the Brazilian Aluminium Association’s 2011 figures show that for the tenth (yes, 10th) year running Brazil has the highest rate of aluminium can recycling in the world reaching a new world record of 98,3%. In other words, over 98 of every 100 cans produced in Brazil make their way to the recycling plant before hitting the rubbish heap. Brazil is a vast country so that equates to 2million cans recycled per hour and in São Paulo the system is of such efficiency that the same metal you drink out of today will have a 98% chance of being back on a shelf somewhere in the city within 33 days. It is of the end of a conveyer that comes from the Recycling Building to the Waste Building. It is running all day and the pile you see is a couple of hours accumulation.

The figures are breathtaking, to the point of being on the verge of miraculous. ABAL, the Brazilian Aluminium Association’s 2011 figures show that for the tenth (yes, 10th) year running Brazil has the highest rate of aluminium can recycling in the world reaching a new world record of 98,3%. In other words, over 98 of every 100 cans produced in Brazil make their way to the recycling plant before hitting the rubbish heap. Brazil is a vast country so that equates to 2million cans recycled per hour and in São Paulo the system is of such efficiency that the same metal you drink out of today will have a 98% chance of being back on a shelf somewhere in the city within 33 days.
To put that in context, the next highest recycler of aluminium cans is Japan at 92,6%, a highly developed and procedure-focused country. The average for Europe is a shameful 66,7% which in turn is still slightly higher than the rate of 54,1% in the US.
The can recycling business indirectly saves energy due to a recycled can being 20 times more energy efficient to produce than a new one and as a sector injects over R$ 600million into the Brazilian economy per year. Impressive figures but how is that achieved.
Whilst the ABAL and the politicians may point to educational programs, social initiatives, environmental awareness, technlogy and processing chains, the real answer is in the last paragraph. It’s all about the money. Part of the R$ 600million comes from paying for to have these cans searched for and collected by a legion of scrap hunters or catadores as they are locally known.
No catador is hunting cans for the joy of global environmental impact, rather the can has become the best scrap to hunt. You get more reais per gram handing a can than virtually anything else, and they are thrown out in abundance. It is the cheapest and most efficient recycling system and requires no government investment.
For every 75 cans a catador gets approximately R$3 (depending on the region) whereas a kilo of paper or 20 plastic PET bottles fetch just a few cents.
The catadores are paid enough for it to be worthwhile for them to eek out a living on collecting cans (rather than other material) but sufficiently poorly to ensure recycling is a highly profitable activity. Pure capitalism at work, ethically questionable, but without a doubt effective as the 98,3% figure shows
But before we celebrate here’s a thought for the next time you go to a major event in São Paulo and you see a catador collecting cans: the time he invests in collecting cans he neglects in collecting other material. And without true governmental initiatives, excelling in one sector will by definition mean failing in other. With two decades to go before it can reprocess spent nuclear fuel, the US will have to bury nearly 70,000 tons of it, a research lab reports. It comes after Congress and the Obama administration defunded a planned nuclear waste repository in 2011. Some may take it many steps further and I think it's possible because whilst at the highest level of recycling it's all covered, Servicing small business & residential homes is still very open for anyone wanting to pick up e-waste in smaller qty's. The capital of Burkina Faso has been named "Cleanest City in Africa" three times, mainly thanks to the women's cooperatives managing the city's recycling. "We clean the city, fight poverty and raise awareness", says Oumou Traore, with some pride. In one of the poorest nations in the world the signs of progress are heartening. "We have verified that there is progress. People's behaviour and habits have changed!"

But, why bother to recycle? The benefits are far from indisputable. According to advocates of the new green orthodoxy, recycling is essential if we are to reduce pollution and alleviate global warming, but given its limited impact on CO2 emissions, it often seems as if the imperative to recycle has more to do with conspicuous 'good citizenship' than efficient waste management. Perhaps recycling is not only an inconvenient, but an unnecessary part of our daily routines.
Some have hailed the recycling industry of Mumbai as an economic model that we should all take notice of. Many inhabitants of the Indian city spend their time sorting dumped rubbish for recycling. But, how does this resource efficiency match up to our standards of human efficiency? Might a certain amount of wasted material be a price worth paying for the freedom to spend time on other things?

With two decades to go before it can reprocess spent nuclear fuel, the US will have to bury nearly 70,000 tons of it, a research lab reports. It comes after Congress and the Obama administration defunded a planned nuclear waste repository in 2011.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a facility that does research for the Department of Energy (DOE), said that "about 68,450 [metric tons] or about 98 percent of the total current inventory by mass, can proceed to permanent disposal without the need to ensure retrievability for reuse or research purposes" in its report, published near the end of 2012. The rest of the waste, the report said, could be kept available for research on fuel reprocessing and storage.
The report was fairly obscure until being cited in a DOE document that showed plans to find a new permanent waste dump after Congress and the Obama administration cut funding for the Yucca Mountain repository in 2011.
Reprocessing has little support in Washington due to concerns that spent fuel could fall into the wrong hands. Nevertheless the DOE started looking into reprocessing methods in 2005.
But following the March 2011 disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, US officials became wary of recycling radioactive waste.
The Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future, co-chaired by Energy Secretary Steven Chu, said that "no currently available or reasonably foreseeable reactor and fuel cycle technology developments - including advances in reprocessing and recycling technologies - have the potential to fundamentally alter the waste management challenges the nation confronts over at least the next several decades, if not longer" in a report.

Advertising to local businesses and households with flyers gets me enough e-waste to keep me busy at a comfortable level.
Some may take it many steps further and I think it's possible because whilst at the highest level of recycling it's all covered, Servicing small business & residential homes is still very open for anyone wanting to pick up e-waste in smaller qty's.
Space is always an issue for me so it's a balance between bringing stuff in, researching and then either selling or scrapping.

There are some ISO standards related to recycling such as ISO 15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management control of recycling practice.
Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, tires, textiles and electronics. The composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste—such as food or garden waste—is also considered recycling.[2] Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection centre or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned and reprocessed into new materials destined for manufacturing.
In the strictest sense, recycling of a material would produce a fresh supply of the same material—for example, used office paper would be converted into new office paper, or used polystyrene foam into new polystyrene. However, this is often difficult or too expensive (compared with producing the same product from raw materials or other sources), so "recycling" of many products or materials involves their reuse in producing different materials (for example, paperboard) instead. Another form of recycling is the salvage of certain materials from complex products, either due to their intrinsic value (such as lead from car batteries, or gold from circuit boards), or due to their hazardous nature (e.g., removal and reuse of mercury from thermometers and thermostats).

The Republican frontrunner name-dropped ex-presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Scott Walker, as well as John Kasich, one of the three remaining men vying for the GOP's nomination. An water leak in the attic of a Toulouse home has led to the discovery of a 400-year-old masterpiece that may have been painted by Italian master Caravaggio, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
