Filmmaker Brian Knappenberger on New Aaron Swartz Documentary The Internet's Own Boy

"Aaron [Swartz] was on the edge, he was ahead of everybody else and that's just not a comfortable place to be," says Brian Knappenberger, a documentary filmmaker who is behind a new film about Swartz's life called The Internet's Own Boy. Reason TV sat down with Knappenberger to talk about the film and a few of Swartz's ideas about freedom in the age of the Internet. Swartz was a programming prodigy who helped create RSS and Creative Commons, and he co-founded Reddit. After selling Reddit to Condé Nast, Swartz turned his attention to political organizing, becoming a popular Internet activist who tried to bring attention to progressive causes and freedom on the web. In 2012, he helped bring attention to censorship issues in the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, a protest that culminated with top websites like Google, Wikipedia and Reddit blacking out their pages. "He had a set of skills that he could put in the service of the public good and he didn't see a reason that if he had those skills that he shouldn't do that," says Knappenberger. In 2013, Swartz took his own life after the U.S. Department of Justice charged him with two counts of wire fraud and 11 violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act a few years prior for illegally downloading millions of academic research articles from JSTOR, a nonprofit company that sells such materials. The charges carried a maximum penalty of $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison. "And this is research that is paid for by taxpayers or research that was already in the public domain," says Knappenberg, who says the Justice Department may have tried to make an example of Swartz. "Honestly, the vast majority of things that Aaron was doing seemed to be political organizing, so what were they trying to deter?" Knappenberger was the producer and director of the 2012 documentary We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists and has produced documentaries for Bloomberg, Frontline, and PBS. Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and atomic number 79. It is a dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal with an attractive, bright yellow color and luster that is maintained without tarnishing in air or water. Chemically, gold is a transition metal and a group 11 element. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements, solid under standard conditions. The metal therefore occurs often in free elemental (native) form, as nuggets or grains in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. Less commonly, it occurs in minerals as gold compounds, such as with tellurium as calaverite, sylvanite and krennerite. Gold resists attacks by individual acids, but it can be dissolved by aqua regia (nitro-hydrochloric acid), so named because it dissolves gold. Gold also dissolves in alkaline solutions of cyanide, which have been used in mining. It dissolves in mercury, forming amalgam alloys; is insoluble in nitric acid, which dissolves silver and base metals, a property that has long been used to confirm the presence of gold in items, giving rise to the term acid test. This metal has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history. Gold standards have sometimes been monetary policies, but were widely supplanted by fiat currency starting in the 1930s. The last gold certificate and gold coin currencies were issued in the U.S. in 1932. In Europe, most countries left the gold standard with the start of World War I in 1914 and, with huge war debts, did not return to gold as a medium of exchange. The value of gold is rooted in its medium rarity, easily handling, easy smelting, non-corrosiveness, distinct colour and non-reactiveness to other elements; qualities most other metals lack. A total of 174,100 tonnes of gold have been mined in human history, according to GFMS as of 2012.[2] This is roughly equivalent to 5.6 billion troy ounces or, in terms of volume, about 9261 m3, or a cube 21.0 m on a side. The world consumption of new gold produced is about 50% in jewelry, 40% in investments, and 10% in industry.[3] Besides its widespread monetary and symbolic functions, gold has many practical uses in dentistry, electronics, and other fields. Its high malleability, ductility, resistance to corrosion and most other chemical reactions, and conductivity of electricity have led to many uses, including electric wiring, colored-glass production, and gold leafing. Most of the Earth's gold probably lies at its core, the metal's high density having made it sink there in the planet's youth. Virtually all discovered gold is considered to have been deposited later by meteorites that contained the element,[4][5][6][7][8] with the asteroid that formed Vredefort crater having been implicated in the formation of the largest gold mining region on earth, Witwatersrand basin.

Attila the Hun One of History's Monsters

A marauding barbarian with a reputation as one of history's monsters, even today Attila's name is a synonym for savagery. Attila (/ˈætɨlə/ or /əˈtɪlə/; ?--453), frequently referred to as Attila the Hun, was the ruler of the Huns from 434 until his death in 453. He was leader of the Hunnic Empire, which stretched from the Ural River to the Rhine River and from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea. During his reign he was one of the most feared enemies of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. He crossed the Danube twice and plundered the Balkans, but was unable to take Constantinople. His unsuccessful campaign in Persia was followed in 441 by an invasion of the Eastern Roman Empire, the success of which emboldened Attila to invade the West . He also attempted to conquer Roman Gaul (modern France), crossing the Rhine in 451 and marching as far as Aurelianum (Orléans) before being defeated at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. Subsequently he invaded Italy, devastating the northern provinces, but was unable to take Rome. He planned for further campaigns against the Romans but died in 453. The historiography of Attila is faced with a major challenge, in that the only complete sources are written in Greek and Latin, by the enemies of the Huns. His contemporaries left many testimonials of his life, but only fragments of these remain. Priscus, a Roman diplomat and historian who wrote in Greek, was both a witness to and an actor in the story of Attila, as a member of the embassy of Theodosius II at the Hunnic court in 449. Although he was obviously biased by his political position, his writing is a major source for the life of Attila and he is the only person known to have recorded a physical description of him. He was the author of an eight-volume work of history covering the period from 434 to 452. Today we have only fragments of this work, but it was cited extensively by the 6th-century historians Procopius and Jordanes, especially in Jordanes's The Origins and Deeds of the Goths. As it contains numerous references to Priscus's history, it is an important source of information about the Hunnic empire and its neighbours. Here, he describes the legacy of Attila and the Hunnic people for a century after Attila's death. Marcellinus Comes, a chancellor of Justinian during the same era, also describes the relations between the Huns and the Eastern Roman Empire. Numerous ecclesiastical writings contain useful albeit scattered information, sometimes difficult to authenticate or distorted by years of hand-copying between the 6th and 17th centuries. The Hungarian writers of the 12th century, wishing to portray the Huns in a positive light as their glorious ancestors, repressed certain historical elements and added their own legends. The literature and knowledge of the Huns themselves was transmitted solely orally, by means of epics and chanted poems that were handed down from generation to generation. Indirectly, fragments of this oral history have reached us via the literature of the Scandinavians and Germans, neighbours of the Huns who wrote between the 9th and 13th centuries. Attila is a major character in many Medieval epics, such as the Nibelungenlied, as well as various Eddas and sagas. Archaeological investigation has uncovered some details about the lifestyle, art and warfare of the Huns. There are a few traces of battles and sieges, but today the tomb of Attila and the location of his capital have not yet been found.

Top Documentary Films: What Happened to Chernobyl After The Explosion - Full Documentary A little over an hour's drive north (130km) of the city of Kiev is one of the most talked about places, and probably the most controversial tourist attraction in the Ukraine. Amidst an empty, stark, and abandoned landscape the site of Chernobyl sits here.Now that radiation levels have decreased to allow guided tours, you can safely venture forth from the comfort of your rented Kiev apartment or hotel in Kiev to follow in the steps of the many thousands of visitors from all over the world who have visited the site since it was deemed safe to reopen in 2002. Protected by thick walls, the viewing area allows visitors clear sight of the doomed sarcophagus. This has become a form of modern icon a little like the Empire State building or Windsor Castle, due in the main to having being seen by millions of people as portrayed in newspapers/ magazines, or when the terrifying news of the explosion was reported worldwide by television crews. 20 years since reactor number 4 exploded, spending a few hours near Chernobyl is actually very safe. Much of the region records only slightly elevated levels of radiation - about 22 micro-roentgens, as opposed to the usual 14. Around the actual reactor, the relative hot spots are diligently monitored on a regular basis, and have posed no risk to human life. National Health Protection agencies from the UK, Europe, and USA all now agree that visitors will receive no more radiation during a visit to Chernobyl than that experienced whilst travelling on a transatlantic flight! The one thing all visitors are told to avoid doing, however, is to avoid eating any food grown within the zone. Therefore, all tours supply lunch for their groups in the form of fresh food brought with them from Kiev. Each guide carries a Geiger counter, and they are intimately aware of exactly where they can and cannot take their tour groups, plus everyone visiting is automatically screened for radiation levels before they leave the zone. Close by is the town of Pripyat, once home to 47,000 nuclear workers and their families, and now an atomic-era Pompeii. Trees thrust through the empty shells of hotels, restaurants and bars, and the huge football stadium is stark and overgrown. In the local school, classrooms lie with open books and the detritus of lives dramatically interrupted by evacuation - it reminds one of being aboard a large land-locked Maria Celeste. There are still some people living in the exclusion zone. They number around 350, most of them elderly residents. Many were moved out to Kiev accommodation after the accident, but all missed their homes and decided en-mass to return. They live a normal life growing their vegetables, and are seemingly unperturbed by the radiation.
