INDONESIA THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA - G20 MEMBER
INDONESIA THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA - G20 MEMBER With a population of over 242.3 million, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and represents a sizable consumer market. In 2012, Indonesia had a gross domestic product (GDP) of $894.9 billion, making it the 16th largest economy in the world. (International Monetary Fund) The Indonesian government plays a significant role in Indonesia's market economy in which it owns over 160 enterprises and sets prices for several goods such as electricity, rice and fuel. Indonesia has the largest economy in Southeast Asia and is a member of both the G20 and APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation). According to the IMF, Indonesia is the third fastest growing economy in the G20 after India and China. The country's main economic industries include petroleum and natural gas, apparel, textiles, apparel, mining, tourism and rubber. Indonesia has endured the recent global financial crisis through its reliance on domestic consumption to drive continual economic growth. In addition, investment from both foreign and domestic sources has supported the Indonesian economy. Due to its recent economic growth and sound fiscal policies, Indonesia's debt to GDP ratio has steadily declined. Trade was been expanding swiftly between the United States and Indonesia in the last several years. Since 2005, U.S. exports to Indonesia have more than doubled from $3.1 million to $8 million in 2012. The main export categories are transportation equipment, agricultural products, chemicals, and machinery. Indonesia is actively involved with Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). APEC was formed in 1989. It serves as a multilateral forum in which Asian and Pacific economies can solve economic problems and cooperate in developing key economic sectors. Collectively, the 21 economies of APEC, which touch the Pacific Ocean, represent a large consumer market— nearly half the world's population, nearly half of all world trade and more than $31 trillion in economic output. The APEC economies are: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Republic of the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States and Vietnam. Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (ASEAN) On October 7, 2003, 10 Southeast Asian nations signed an agreement to become an economic union by 2020. The agreement sets deadlines for lowering travel restrictions and tariffs in the region of 500 million people. Trade in this ASEAN Economic Community totals more than $720 billion a year. ASEAN includes Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei and Myanmar. Indonesia will host the 25th Annual APEC meetings in 2013- published: 22 Aug 2013

G20 meeting targets an additional 2 economic growth - 23 February 2014
Financial leaders from the 20 biggest economies have set a goal of generating 2 trillion (1.2 trillion) in extra output over the next five years. During that period they aim to boost the gross domestic product of G20 countries by 2 above the levels currently expected. It is hoped the move will create tens of million of new jobs. The goal was announced at the Group of 20 weekend meeting in Sydney. The main G20 meeting is in Brisbane in November. Unprecedented US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said the agreement was essential for turning the next page in the global economic recovery. G20 members have spoken clearly: boosting growth and demand tops the global economic agenda, he said in a statement. And Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey heralded the announcement from finance ministers and central bankers as being unprecedented. He added: We are putting a number to it for the first time - putting a real number to what we are trying to achieve. The communiqu from the group, which represents about 85 of the global economy, also said they would take concrete action to increase investment and employment. The G20 major industrialised nations include the US as well as emerging economies such as Saudi Arabia and China. Each country will now present a detailed growth strategy to the G20 November summit. Tax issues Another topic discussed at this weekends meeting was the need to develop stricter rules on cross-border taxation. Profit shifting by firms away from high tax nations to lower taxation regimes has sparked public and political fury in the UK and US. Firms in the spotlight have included Starbucks, Google, Apple and Amazon. The G20 has now come up with a set of common standards for sharing bank account information across borders. An automatic exchange of information among G20 members will take effect by the end of 2015. Some multinational companies arent paying their fair share of tax anywhere, said Australian Finance Minister Joe Hockey. We want a global response. Separately, in the UK a new HMRC poster and publicity campaign is being launched on Monday to tackle offshore tax avoidance. Saudi and Indonesian leaders arrrive for G20 summit 2009 News
The leaders of the world s largest economies are set to begin two days of meetings in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on Thursday in search of a common approach to advance a fledgling economic recovery and prevent new financial meltdowns. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Saudi Arabia s Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal were among leaders to arrive on Wednesday night for the G20 leaders summit. The gathering which follows G-20 meetings last November in Washington and this past April in London includes older industrial powers along with major fast-growing developing economies such as China India and Brazil. Issues on the agenda include capping bankers bonuses overhauling financial regulation and plotting a future course for sustainable growth. Most of the G-20 leaders are coming to Pittsburgh from New York where they gathered first for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. The summit is expected to draw protesters from around the world.- published: 04 Nov 2013
