The Philosophies: Beyond Intelligent Design
"Beyond Intelligent Design: The Philosophies" a panel of lectures

Roy Clouser: "Genesis Regained: Creation not Creationism"
The first part of this paper concerns the theological doctrine of creation, which not to be confused with the theory of creationism. The doctrine of creation is that there is only one unoriginated being, God, on whom all else depends for existence. It goes on to say that God has called into existence ex nihilo everything found in, and true of, the temporal/spatial cosmos. In biblical language, God created everything "visible or invisible" so prima facie that includes not just things and events but also every kind of properties and laws, and all the potentialities that have unfolded since the cosmos was called into being. What this tells us about God can be summed up the way one theologian put it: " . . . that from which all other things derive their origin must neccessarily be self-existent and eternal."
This much is common to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, but in what follows I will speak only as a Christian, leaving it to Jewish and Muslim thinkers to say how closely they can agree with what I have to say about this doctrine. I find it to be both reiterated and presupposed throughout the biblical scriptures, but chiefly associated with the early chapters of Genesis. And since it is those chapters that loom large in discussions of science and religion, it is those chapters I will focus on. My purpose will be to arrive at a proper understanding of that text relative to its place in the biblical corpus and its own internal structure. My conclusion will be that its accounts of creation in six days and the origin of humans are profoundly and thoroughly religious, and are so in a way that neither yields scientific information nor needs to be reconciled with scientific information. I realize that this doesn't sound like anything new. What will be different about my presentation of it is that it will be based on the text itself rather than a sharp partitioning of humans into natural and non-natural sides, or a wave-of-the-hand dismissal of the text as, say, poetry.
The second part of this paper will not, however, proceed to the conclusion often drawn by those sharing my view of Genesis. Often that view of the text is then hitched to the hasty inference that religious belief and science have nothing--or almost nothing-- to do with one another. in opposition to that position, I will argue that self-existence is the defining characteristic of divinity, so that the control of theories by a belief about what is self-existent is the same as control by a divinity belief and thus amounts to religious control of all theories. That is to say, any theory not regulated by the biblical doctrine of creation will inevitably be controlled by an alternative religious belief, a belief in something other than God as divine and in all else as dependent on that alternative divinity. But in any case there are no religiously neutral theories.
Fr. Rafael Pascual: "Is Intelligent Design a Scientific Alternative to Evolution?"
The goal of this speech is to clarify the epistemic status of the Intelligent Design proposal. We can consider it an updated version of the classical ways to demonstrate the existence of God, in particular the so-called "fifth way". As such, it seems to be neither scientific nor properly theological, but rather a proposal at a rational-philosophical level. At the same time , it must also be made clear that the negation of purpose in evolutionary biological processes is similarly a philosophical position, not a scientific one. I propose to acknowledge this state of affairs andto reframe the debate at its proper level. On the argumentative level, it's just as wrong to neglect the controversy as to discredit the opponent. On the epistemic level, it is a mistake to present Intelligent Design as a scientific replacement for the scientific theory of evolution; it should be considered instead a genuine and serious alternative to the quasi-philosophical ideology of evolutionism.
Norbert Samuelson: "Science and Intelligent Design"
Samuelson will deal with the following two sets of issues of intellectual history and Jewish philosophy that arise from the recent Dover case decisions: Set 1: Defining science in the light of evolution: What is "science" past and present? Ought government to have a role in answering this question? Why is Darwin's discussion of evolution generally recognized today as "science" while Michale Behe's is not? Is Dawkin's discussion of evolution "science"? The discussion will include a discussion of Newton's claim in the PRINCIPIA MATHEMATICA that his argument for gravity has no hypotheses. Set 2: Defining creation in the light of religious history: What makes creation creation? Does Plato's TIMAEUS offer a creation theory? What about Aristotle's ON THE HEAVENS? What does the Genesis account say ab

Rabbi Art Green, Rabbi Nehemiah Polen, Rabbi Ebn Leader on Kabbalah
The term “Kabbalah” has become part of popular culture in the US and there are many organizations and teachers offering courses and study opportunities. Many different claims are made in regards to the goals and benefits of such study. In this conversation cult expert Steven Hassan ( http://www.freedomofmind.com ) asks Hebrew College teachers, rabbis Arthur Green, Nehemia Polen and Ebn Leader to explain the principles that can help keep Kabbalah study from becoming cult-like and destructive.

It Is No Dream (2002 - 53min.)
It Is No Dream
"If you will it, it is no dream," wrote the founder of political Zionism Theodor Herzl in 1902, prophesizing the creation of a utopian Jewish state.
One hundred years later, some of the harshest critics of Israel's occupation policies are Israelis themselves – a small minority of intellectuals, political activists and artists whose voices are rarely heard outside Israel.
Shortly after the outbreak of the second Intifada in 2001, filmmakers Benny Brunner and Joseph Rochlitz travelled through the country and spoke to a number of them:
Meir Shalev – one of Israel's best-known writers
Gideon Levy – columnist for Haaretz newspaper
Jessica Montell – Director of B'Tselem (Israeli Human Rights Center)
Yehudit Katzir – writer
Yizhar Be'er – Director of the Israeli Center for the Protection of Democracy
Adi Ophir – Professor of Philosophy at Tel Aviv University
Noa Levy – leader of the High School students "refusal-to-serve" movement
Yitzhak La'or – writer and poet
The filmmakers also attended a major peace rally in Tel Aviv, and recorded the fiery words of Yishai Rosen-Tzvi, one of the first to sign the Letter of Refusal to serve in the Occupied Territories: "Fighting against terrorism? What a joke! Government and army policies create a hothouse for terrorism (...) It is forbidden to treat men, women and children like dirt. The more people understand it, the sooner there will be an end to this cursed occupation."
The film is enhanced by the powerful work of artist David Reeb, who frequently uses images of the occupation in his drawings and paintings.
