It extends from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south, bounded by Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east. At 165.25 million square kilometres (63.8 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean -- and, in turn, the hydrosphere -- covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth's land area combined.[1] The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific.[2] The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).[3] The eastern Pacific Ocean was first sighted by Europeans in the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great "southern sea" which he named Mar del Sur. The ocean's current name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish expedition of the world in 1521, as he encountered favourable winds on reaching the ocean. He therefore called it Mar Pacifico in Portuguese, meaning "peaceful sea"

Radiation Of The Pacific Ocean In The Next 10 Years - Japan Nuclear Disaster

This is a 10 year timelapse of the radiation from Fukushima, Japan, contaminating the Pacific Ocean A sequence of global ocean circulation models, with horizontal mesh sizes of 0.5°, 0.25° and 0.1°, are used to estimate the long-term dispersion by ocean currents and mesoscale eddies of a slowly decaying tracer (half-life of 30 years, comparable to that of 137Cs) from the local waters off the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plants. The tracer was continuously injected into the coastal waters over some weeks; its subsequent spreading and dilution in the Pacific Ocean was then simulated for 10 years. The simulations do not include any data assimilation, and thus, do not account for the actual state of the local ocean currents during the release of highly contaminated water from the damaged plants in March--April 2011. An ensemble differing in initial current distributions illustrates their importance for the tracer patterns evolving during the first months, but suggests a minor relevance for the large-scale tracer distributions after 2--3 years. By then the tracer cloud has penetrated to depths of more than 400 m, spanning the western and central North Pacific between 25°N and 55°N, leading to a rapid dilution of concentrations. The rate of dilution declines in the following years, while the main tracer patch propagates eastward across the Pacific Ocean, reaching the coastal waters of North America after about 5--6 years. Tentatively assuming a value of 10 PBq for the net 137Cs input during the first weeks after the Fukushima incident, the simulation suggests a rapid dilution of peak radioactivity values to about 10 Bq m−3 during the first two years, followed by a gradual decline to 1--2 Bq m−3 over the next 4--7 years. Adrenalin junkies not sated by the three-day hike to Ciudad Perdida can enjoy heart-pumping action in San Gil -- the adventure capital of Colombia - with rafting, abseiling and rock climbing among the activities on offer. To savour the true essence of Colombia, sample the local cuisine and abundance of tropical fruits. Empanadas are a popular dish of meat and potatoes wrapped in a pastry pouch. With coffee and sugar plantations a major part of the country's primary industries, Colombians are unsurprisingly renowned for having a sweet tooth. Locals like to indulge in desserts such as the milk-based arequipe, and drink their coffee black. Each South American country has its own regional music and dance style and for Colombia that's salsa and cumbia. For a taste of Columbia's renowned nightlife, head to Bogota or Cali, known as the salsa capital of South America. For many centuries the giant turtles were considered to be a culinary delicacy and a total of fourteen sub-species of giant turtle inhabit the islands, some of which have been known to live for more than a hundred and fifty years. Even today ocean biologists and an assortment of other scientists follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and in the 1960's a research station on one of the islands was named in his honour. With the introduction of non-indigenous dogs, cats and rats, the ecological balance on some of the islands has become critical, however, since 1959 the Galapagos Islands have been designated as a protected area.

In this travel video from Maui, Hawaii, I travel to Maui and start off by heading to Haleakalā National Park to watch the sunrise from the highest volcano in Maui. On this part of the island, clouds form at the base of the volcano, and as the sun rises, a myriad of colors form and provide an unforgettable visual experience. Next I throw on a wet suit and hit the waves to learn how to surf -- my first time ever. Though I've ridden the New York City subway after happy hour before, I was still a little unsure about how my balance would be on a surfboard. Luckily, the surf instructor had a black labrador dog out on her board with us in case anything went terribly wrong. Finally, I wrap up the day by heading to the beach with a ukulele to have a jam session with a local Maui resident and ukulele player, where we jam out to some Bob Marley as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, framed by the nearby islands of Moloka'i and Lana'i.
