Top lit wood stove. Leaves black powder on the bottom and side of the pot, but wipes off easily with a sheet of toilet paper using no water. 2 cups of water boils in 5.5 minutes. Since secondary air is blowing directly to the top of the flaming wood, I think some people might say this is not, strictly speaking, a "wood gas" stove, but I think it is since there is a downward moving pyrolysis layer. Instead of looking at where in the burn chamber are there flame, perhaps also look for locations where there is no flame. With good smoke/air mixing flame should be everywhere in the chamber. I made about 8 variations of this stoves and the best one (when tested without the outer shell) has 8 primary holes of 5mm and a single slot secondary hole (width 50mm, height sloped from 12 mm to 7mm, tabs pushed in slightly downwards at 80 degrees. Also push in the lower edge of the slot to help air flow and avoid finger cuts. If tab are cut 20mm tall and pushed in at 30 degrees then secondar air is blowing at the fuel instead of the at the rising smoke and this will cause the exhaust to smell like tar. Note that the horizontally radiated heat from the un-clothed stove made the brick pot stands in the video too hot to touch. The Ikea can idea is just one way to capture this heat to keep the burning chamber hotter. Ideas from the rocket stove would be better. Best variation for the Ikea tin starts with the same as above, but add another slot directly above the first slot and 1cm below the top. Height is 1cm. Cut bottom of slot so tabs hinges on top of slot. Push in 80 degrees. This seem to burn off some more smoke before it goes above the stove. And I expect it to allow the hot air above the lower slot to enter the burn chamber. Fuel efficiency when used with rice cooker setup: 60gm of hardwood pellets will boil 1 litre of water from 27C in slightly less than 10 minutes. Fuel capacity of the particular stove mentioned (filled to 8mm below the lower slot) is 86g of pellets. Next step is to add a larger pyrolysis chamber like the one on the Mask Stove. Still can't solve the problem of how to design a simple and cheap stove that can be built using simple hand tools to boil a pot of water quickly without blacking the bottom of the pot. Sigh... If anyone see one, please please let me know. ----------------------------------------------------- Advantages of the coconut juice can wood gas stove (without the outer shell): - small and light to make it easier to pack - keeps camp gear clean and odour free - in the event you drop your backpack, it won't crush and there is nothing to come loose or fall apart - can burn wood pellets or small pieces of wood - can fit more stoves under a pot for stronger flame - Can is readily and cheaply available in most supermarkets in North America, Central America, Europe and Asia. I suspect it is available everywhere else in the world. - minutes to make using simple hand tools - no aluminum parts to give off harmful emissions - 15 seconds of extremely light smoke at flame out instead of minutes of heavy smoke for some stoves. This is due to the small diameter of the stove which allowed the primary air to reach the pellets in the center. Notes, Explanations, and Clarifications: I didn't look to see if there was any smoke at flame-out with the outer shell, but I didn't notice any. The rectangular hole on the bottom of the Ikea Nidelva can in the video is too small. I recommend it should be 30% wider. My local Ikea stopped selling these cans, the replacement version have different sizes from what is needed for the coconut juice can stove. Oh well. Like the Mask stove, the tabs for the secondary air holes are folded into the can at near 90 degrees. Do not fold them 180 degrees upwards. The tabs guide the secondary air deeper into the pot. By having the tabs on top, this directs more air downwards to begin secondary combustion lower in the can. This should provide additional time for the flame to burn inside the can without resorting to a taller stove. When I said "score a circle" on top of the lid in the video, I meant a small circle to help remove the sharp pointed tips. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to bend the triangular tabs up and down a few times and the tips will break off along the score line. Don't score where you will fold the metal into the coconut juice can. It is better to have a windscreen around the entire stove and half way up the pot then just around the stove. To make one for camping you can fold multiple layers of aluminum foil sheets . For packing it can be folded and wrapped around the stove. Reference: FE181g
