In this video, I continue discussion of "All Things are Possible," one of the early works by Lev Shestov, an important figure in the development of Existentialism. I discuss in Shestov's critique of the philosophy and culture of his own time -- in particular metaphysics, positivism, and utilitarianism -- and his view of morality, science and logic as "those police agents", as ways in which we human beings allow necessity to be foisted off on us, infringing freedom, possibility, and experiment. In this video, I start my discussion of "All Things are Possible," one of the early works by Lev Shestov, an important figure in the development of Existentialism. I discuss in particular Shestov's critique of the philosophy and culture of his own time, his antisystematic empiricist approach to philosophy and to life, and his importance as an early interpreter who saw the connections between Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, and Nietzsche. I also discuss several of the metaphors in this work that illuminate his thought, then read and discuss a variety of passages in which he talks about why Philosophy must pull itself out of the yoke of logic, bring passion into metaphysics, and embrace the possible. In this video, I discuss the Existentialist philosopher Lev Shestov's short essay, "The Theory of Knowledge". In it, Shestov discusses the nature of truth and how post-Kantian Critical Philosophy, and the History of Philosophy have missed the sorts of truth that philosophers genuinely engaged in the practice of Philosophy -- an activity rather than a method or a discipline -- have encountered and attempted to convey. In his view, the Theory of Knowledge really functions as an apologetics for science, which indicates a kind of uneasiness or insecurity even about what is helps to be most reliable and certain. Truth in the full sense is not what the sciences can provide, nor is it found by universal assent of all rational beings, nor by application of disciplinary methods Shestov attacks logic and necessity, and espouses a metaphysical pluralism, in which it is possible for a number of great philosophers and philosophies to attain ultimate truths while still disagreeing with each other. He also distinguishes between philosophies, teachings or interpretations about those philosophies, and deductions from those philosophies.

This is a more personal video, where I talk about coming back to campus for my third year teaching Philosophy classes in the Core Curriculum at Marist College. One of the aspects that made this such a good day was meeting up with -- and catching up with -- several of my former students. I also spent some time reconnecting with various colleagues, some in Philosophy, some in other disciplines. I also end up discussing what I'm doing in my two classes, Philosophical Perspectives (focused on the themes of Love, Friendship, and Desire) and Ethics -- what sort of texts and thinkers we'll be studying, how I use the course management system to create an online learning environment, why I make my students write so much, and what kind of students (good, hardworking ones, for the most part) I get in my classes at Marist.

Intro to Philosophy: Cicero, On Friendship (part 1)

In this discussion/lecture session from my Fall 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we begin our study of Cicero's work, On Friendship. We discuss in particular the different sorts of relationships withing which we find meaning, enjoyment and satisfaction, what sorts of good people make a central priority in their lives and what the implications for friendship are. We also discuss Cicero's strong claim that only good people can actually be friends with each other. The classic question -- whether friendship is based on difference and opposites, or on similarity gets transformed into questions about what kind of opposites really can be attracted to each other, and a discussion about the attractive nature of virtue. A student asks a particularly good question -- how does Cicero's position on friendship get past Aristotle's position, which also distinguishes between friendships based in virtue or moral goodness and friendships that are based merely in pleasure or usefulness. One answer to this is that Cicero work off of Aristotle's position, adding considerations of other goods. A better answer is that Cicero focuses more explicitly on virtue's attractiveness, virtue's natural expression in doing good actions and good will towards others, and the importance of "re-loving" (redamare), i.e. loving in return

Half Hour Hegel: The Complete Phenomenology of Spirit (Preface, sec 40-42)

In this eighteenth video in the new series on G.W.F. Hegel's great early work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, I read and comment on the fortieth, forty-first, and forty-second paragraphs of the text, from the Preface. He begins by briefly exploring what dogmatic thinking consists in, and then examines the status of historical truths, discussing what degree of necessity or scientific perspective historical inquiry can involve. He then begins what will be a long discussion of the status of mathematical truths, mathematical modes of cognition, and how mathematics -- the discipline and approach held out as the preeminent one in early modernity -- does not really lead us into the heart of the phenomenon, as philosophical cognition does. In this video series, I will be working through the entire Phenomenology, paragraph by paragraph -- for each one, first reading the paragraph, and then commenting on what Hegel is doing, referencing, discussing, etc. in that paragraph. This is a fairly substantial undertaking -- producing and releasing one or two 25-35 minute videos per week, we project this series will require at least three years of work on my part. The goal is ultimately to provide something like an online lecture course covering every part of the Phenomenology, leaving no portions out, as a resource for students, lifelong learners, and even interested instructors.
