The Argument from Design for the Existence of God (The Reasons to Believe #47)
Released: July 11, 2014 By: Daniel Whyte III Our Reasons to Believe Scripture passage for today is Isaiah 50:4. It reads, "The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned." Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from C. S. Lewis. He said, "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important." Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled "The Argument from Design for the Existence of God" from "The Handbook of Christian Apologetics" by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli: This sort of argument is of wide and perennial appeal. Almost everyone admits that reflection on the order and beauty of nature touches something very deep within us. But are the order and beauty of the product of intelligent design and conscious purpose? For theists the answer is yes. Arguments for design are attempts to vindicate this answer; to show why it is the most reasonable one to give. They have been formulated in ways as richly varied as the experience in which they are rooted. The following displays the core or central insight. 1. The universe displays a staggering amount of intelligibility, both within the things we observe and in the way these things relate to others outside themselves. That is to say: the way they exist and coexist display an intricately beautiful order and regularity that can fill even the most casual observer with wonder. It is the norm in nature for many different beings to work together to produce the same valuable end --- for example, the organs in the body work for our life and health. 2. Either this intelligible order is the product of chance or of intelligent design. 3. Not chance. 4. Therefore the universe is the product of intelligent design. 5. Design comes only from a mind, a designer. 6. Therefore the universe is the product of an intelligent Designer. The first premise is certainly true --- even those resistant to the argument admit it. The person who did not would have to be almost pathetically obtuse. A single protein molecule is a thing of immensely impressive order; much more so a single cell; and incredibly much more so an organ like the eye, where ordered parts of enormous and delicate complexity work together with countless others to achieve a single certain end. Even chemical elements are ordered to combine with other elements in certain ways and under certain conditions. Apparent disorder is a problem precisely because of the overwhelming pervasiveness of order and regularity. So the first premise stands. If all this order is not in some way the product of intelligent design --- then what? Obviously, it "just happened." Things just fell out that way "by chance." Alternatively, if all this order is not the product of blind, purposeless forces, then it has resulted from some kind of purpose. That purpose can only be intelligent design. So the second premise stands. It is of course the third premise that is crucial. Ultimately, nonbelievers tell us, it is indeed by chance and not by any design that the universe of our experience exists the way it does. It just happens to have this order, and the burden of proof is on believers to demonstrate why this could not be so by chance alone. But this seems a bit backward. It is surely up to nonbelievers to produce a credible alternative to design. And "chance" is simply not credible. For we can understand chance only against a background of order. To say that something happened "by chance" is to say that it did not turn out as we would have expected, or that it did turn out in a way we would not have expected. But expectation is impossible without order...- published: 30 Jul 2014

Argument from evil/suffering begs the question
Argument from evil/suffering begs the question
A bad state of affairs can be turned into a good state of affairs in such a way that the bad state of affairs that preceded it is not just surpassed by the greater good of the whole, but that the bad state of affairs preceding it was in fact necessary for the greater good of the whole. It's like a disharmony in a song, which sounds ugly when heard in isolation, but makes the song as a whole greater than without it. Not being able to hear the whole song, we only witness its disharmonies in isolation. Claiming that there is no song is equivalent to claiming that there is no God, therefore it is begging the question. Taking the premise of an omnipotent, benevolent God actually seriously, any suffering that happens in the finite time here on earth is nothing compared to the eternity of goodness that would follow it in the kingdom of God. It is nothing but the prelude or the foreword titled "the fall" followed by "the redemption" to an epic neverending story of infinite glory. It's just the beginning, a bad start and the kingdom of heaven is not the happy ending of the story, as it is often thought of, but really it is the first chapter of the book after part 2 of the foreword which we find ourselves in currently. "All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before." c.s. lewis, 'the last battle' Compare also Book of Job 38, where the Lord answers to Job and makes clear that Job doesn't know the song and shouldn't expect to know it. He should expect that the worst kind of sufferings can befall him anytime for no reason that can be known by him and at the end Job realizes his ignorance: "Then Job answered the Lord and said: 2 "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 4 'Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.' 5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; 6 therefore I despise myself, and repent[a] in dust and ashes." Note furthermore that Epicurus was a welfare hedonist who believed that pleasure and pain would be the measures of good and evil. Such a limited perspective cannot even begin to comprehend the true meaning of divine omnipotence and benevolence.- published: 20 Jul 2014

The Argument from Ignorance - The Atheist Experience #761 (full episode)
The Atheist Experience is a weekly webcast and cable access television show in Austin, Texas, first aired on October 19, 1997. The show is hosted and co-hosted by rotating regulars Matt Dillahunty,[1][2] Jeff Dee, Martin Wagner, Russell Glasser, Don Baker, Tracie Harris and Jen Peeples. Frequent topics are religious dogma, morality, ethics and application of the scientific method.[3] The co-host often opens with a theme or current event, after which live calls are taken. Although debate about all theist and atheist-related views are welcome, because of the large number of Christians in the United States,[4][5][6] the emphasis is mostly on Christianity. The Atheist Experience is broadcast by the Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), an educational non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas. The central goals of the ACA are to promote positive atheism and the separation of church and state.[7] A former fan-run YouTube channel has over 91,000 subscribers and videos with over 12,000,000 views.[8] It became the official YouTube channel of The Atheist Experience by August 2012 (as mentioned in episode #774). Full episodes still are uploaded to blip.tv. Matt Dillahunty was raised a fundamentalist Baptist[9] and was a Christian for over 20 years. He served in the Navy for 8 years and spent several years in the hi-tech game industry. After this he set out to re-affirm his faith with the intent of attending seminary and pursuing a life in the ministry,[10] but through a process of study, no longer believed his previous theistic beliefs.[11] He co-founded Iron Chariots.[12] Dillahunty served as the president of the Atheist Community of Austin.[13] He is married to Beth Presswood, who sporadically co-hosts The Atheist Experience. Russell Glasser, (Princeton, New Jersey) is a software engineer for Harte-Hanks, Austin Texas. He received an MSc in computer engineering at the University of Texas in 2007.[14] Glasser is the producer of the internet radio show The Non Prophets.[15][16] He has a son, Ben.[14] Jen Peeples is an aerospace engineer. She served in the US Army for 26 years retiring as a lieutenant colonel, was a military test pilot and left the military as an aviation officer.[17] Peeples is a self-described "foxhole atheist".[18] She currently serves as the president of the Atheist Community of Austin.[13] Jeff Dee (15 May 1961) is an artist and game designer. He is a recognized figure in the role-playing game community and game industry.[19] His illustrative work shows comic book art form and influence. He is the co-creator of Villains and Vigilantes,[20] illustrator of Dungeons & Dragons, Deities & Demigods, artist for Master of Orion,[21] art director for Ultima VII and lead designer for The Sims: Castaway Stories. He co-created the The Non Prophets, an internet radio show by the Atheist Community of Austin.[22] Dee posts his opinions on his blog What Worries Jeff Dee?. Martin Wagner (27 April 1966, Henderson, Nevada) is an artist, cartoonist, and filmmaker. Wagner was a prominent figure in the short-lived comics self-publishing movement, along with Dave Sim (Cerebus), Jeff Smith (Bone) and Colleen Doran (A Distant Soil).[23] He self-published the comic book Hepcats.[24] Tracie Harris (Orlando, FL) is a graphic artist, cartoonist and publishing professional who does the Atheist Eve strip hosted on the Atheist Community of Austin web site. She received her BA in Liberal Studies from the University of Central Florida. Harris is a former Christian fundamentalist.[25][26] Harris and Dillahunty were featured on the Religion section of The Huffington Post "facing down an aggressive Christian caller with a shocking view of children who have been the victims of rape." [27] Don Baker is a PhD computer scientist working in the field of computer-supported cooperative work.[26] He has taught at the University of Texas (Austin) as an adjunct for two years. Baker is a board member of the Atheist Community of Austin. He has a strong interest in the nascent field of memetics and has spent several years exploring the implications of Christianity as a meme complex, expressed in his writings at Christianity Meme.[28] Baker serves as the secretary of the Atheist Community of Austin David Smalley of podcast Dogma Debate and the American Atheists (episode #753, 2012-03-18), guest appearance[29][30] Greg Paul, palaeontologist (episode #708, 2011-05-08), guest appearance[29][31] Ray Comfort, Evangelical Christian apologist (episode #702), live call-in[29][32] David Silverman, president of American Atheists (episode #701, 2011-03-20), live call-in[29][33] AronRa (born L.
