Rise of the Zulu Nation and the Battle of Isandlwana
Rise of the Zulu Nation and the Battle of Isandlwana
This show travels to Africa to learn about the rise of the Zulu Nation. He studies their unique battle tactics and culture. He also reenacts one of Britain's most humiliating loses at the Battle of Isandlwana. The Zulu (Zulu: amaZulu) are a Bantu ethnic group of Southern Africa and the largest ethnic group in South Africa, with an estimated 10--11 million people living mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Small numbers also live in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Their language, Zulu, is a Bantu language; more specifically, part of the Nguni subgroup. They remain today the most numerous ethnic group in South Africa, and now have equal rights along with all other citizens, although there is still much more to be done establishing complete social equality in South Africa society. The Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 was the first major encounter in the Anglo--Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Eleven days after the British commenced their invasion of Zululand in South Africa, a Zulu force of some 20,000 warriors attacked a portion of the British main column consisting of about 1,800 British, colonial and native troops and perhaps 400 civilians. The Zulus were equipped mainly with the traditional assegai iron spears and cow-hide shields, but also had a number of muskets and old rifles though they were not formally trained in their use. The British and colonial troops were armed with the state-of-the-art Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle and two 7 pounder artillery pieces as well as a rocket battery. Despite a vast disadvantage in weapons technology, the numerically superior Zulus ultimately overwhelmed the poorly led and badly deployed. British, killing over 1,300 troops, including all those out on the forward firing line. The Zulu army suffered around a thousand killed. The battle was a decisive victory for the Zulus and caused the defeat of the first British invasion of Zululand. The British Army had suffered its worst defeat against a technologically inferior indigenous force. Isandlwana resulted in the British taking a much more aggressive approach in the Anglo--Zulu War, leading to a heavily reinforced second invasion and the destruction of King Cetshwayo's hopes of a negotiated peace. Following the imperialist scheme by which Lord Carnarvon had brought about federation in Canada, it was thought that a similar plan might succeed in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as high commissioner to instigate the scheme. One of the obstacles to such a plan was the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand. Sir Bartle Frere, High Commissioner of southern Africa for the British Empire, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshwayo with which the Zulu king could not comply. Cetshwayo did not comply and Bartle Frere sent Lord Chelmsford to invade Zululand.- published: 10 Feb 2014

WAR IN THE CONGO-WINNING A BATTLE WITH AFRICAN FORCES AND THE UN
People of Tanzania, SA and MALAWI, the people of DRC are thankful to the troop contribution your country has made to fight terrorism in our native country. Although we strongly regret the loss of one of Tanzanian forces, and the wounded among the SA army, we are speechless and will be always thankful for your back up. The DRC has been harassed by its neighbor RWANDA that has kept sending terrorists despite the death of 5 million. Congolese are to blame because its government did not back its patriotic soldiers. The last week of your troops involvement on the battlefield has made a big difference. The Rwandan army that was posted lest than 2 miles from Goma (a town of 1 million people) have been pushed back to more than 13 miles. The Congo forces are also working in discipline lines and have also showed a strong commitment despite casualties. But, your contribution has the credit of getting the Rwandan army off a hill from which bombs were launched on GOMA on civilians houses. Although we have opted for peace talk and diplomacy, we also know that the dictator of Rwanda only believe in blood shed. He is ruthless and have to be delt with by a strong army. World Vision- The Zambia Project
I had the pleasure of shooting this piece for World Vision. To say it was an eye opening trip would be an understatement. As crazy as it is to imagine drinking contaminated water everyday, it's even crazier when you realize that so many people spend the majority of their time just looking for it.
World Vision is an amazing organization doing great things in Zambia and all over the world. To learn more about their effort to bring Zambia clean water, visit www.worldvisionwater.org.

Livingstone, Zambia
Livingstone, Zambia, is home to one of the most beautiful views in the world, Victoria Falls. It's contrasted with devastating darkness and oppression, completely strong-held by HIV, poverty and prostitution.
1 in 3 are HIV Positive.
Women must sell themselves to survive and feed their families. They are almost guaranteed to contract HIV and spread it to others.
Poetice International is starting a new initiative to save the broken and oppressed in Livingstone.

Nelson Mandela Blames US America For War in Irak 2003 Jan 30 Speech
"If there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America. They don't care." Who said these words? Go on, guess? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Nope. Fidel Castro? Guess again. George Galloway, right? Wrong. It was the late, great Nelson Mandela, speaking in January 2003. Plenty of quotes from Madiba have been doing the rounds on Twitter and Facebook, in newspaper obituaries and online profiles, but this particular one hasn't had as much traction as the rest. Could it be because it defies the lazy image of the former South African president as a secular saint, a 'unifier', a figure who supposedly 'transcended' politics and the left-right divide? Could it be because it would force us to reluctantly acknowledge that the ex-ANC leader didn't just battle against injustice at home - who, after all, is pro-apartheid, these days? - but battled against injustice abroad, too. Against (yes, democratically-elected) leaders and governments in the west that now want to wrap themselves in his name, his memory, his legacy. Of the various tributes that have poured in over the past 24 hours from world leaders, both current and former, three in particular stood out for me. Former US president George W. Bush, in a statement put out by his office in Dallas, hailed Mandela as a "good man" and "one of the great forces for freedom and equality of our time". Former British prime minister Tony Blair told the BBC: "He was someone who would put people at their ease, he was someone who brought out the best in people, you felt that when you were with him." And the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu said: "He will be remembered as the father of the new South Africa and a moral leader of the highest order." Yes, yes, yes. We get it. We all agree on the "good man", "moral leader", "brought out the best in people" stuff. So far, so uncontroversial. But when will Messrs Bush, Blair or Netanyahu, or their outriders in the media, admit that the late South African president was also a proud, passionate and life-long critic of some of the key policies that they advocated and implemented, both in and out of high office. Take Iraq. In a speech in January 2003, two months before the invasion, Mandela said military action against the Saddam Hussein regime without UN Security Council approval would be illegitimate; he savaged both Bush and Blair for "undermining the United Nations". He also accused the then president of the United States, a "small man" who has "no foresight", of "wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust". Yes, holocaust. And yes, Mandela said it. Not John Pilger or Michael Moore. "Why is the United States behaving so arrogantly?" he continued. "All that (Mr. Bush) wants is Iraqi oil." Again, Nelson Mandela speaking. Not Tony Benn or the Stop The War Coalition. (In the same speech, incidentally, he also attacked the United States more broadly for its poor post-war record on human rights and for its nuclear strike on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was in this context that he made his stinging remark about America's "unspeakable atrocities".) Take Afghanistan and the so-called 'war on terror'. After initially giving his support to the US-led assault on the Taliban in the aftermath of the horrific 9/11 attacks, Mandela quickly backtracked, saying in January 2002 that his earlier views had been "one-sided and overstated". He apologised for having given the impression that he was "insensitive to and uncaring about the suffering inflicted upon the Afghan people and country" and reminded the Bush administration that the "labeling of Osama bin Laden as the terrorist responsible for those acts before he had been tried and convicted could also be seen as undermining some of the basic tenets of the rule of law". In his 2002 statement, Mandela reiterated his opposition to acts of terror, and reminded readers of how appalled he had been by the barbarism of the 9/11 attacks, but argued that those responsible for bringing down the Twin Towers must be "apprehended and brought to trial without inflicting suffering on innocent people". Do we now have to rebrand Madiba as an apologist for Al Qaeda and appeaser of the Taliban? Take, perhaps above all else, Israel and its treatment of the occupied Palestinian people. Mandela referred to Yasser Arafat as a "comrade in arms"; in February 1990, just 16 days after being released from prison, Mandela embraced Arafat in Lusaka, Zambia, comparing the Palestinian struggle against Israel to the black struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa.- published: 09 Dec 2013

New warning of terror attacks against US bound flights, FOX News
WASHINGTON — The United States intercepted electronic communications this week among senior operatives of Al Qaeda, in which the terrorists discussed attacks against American interests in the Middle East and North Africa, American officials said Friday. The intercepts and a subsequent analysis of them by American intelligence agencies prompted the United States to issue an unusual global travel alert to American citizens on Friday, warning of the potential for terrorist attacks by operatives of Al Qaeda and their associates beginning Sunday through the end of August. Intelligence officials said the threat focused on the Qaeda affiliate in Yemen, which has been tied to plots to blow up American-bound cargo and commercial flights. The bulletin to travelers and expatriates, issued by the State Department, came less than a day after the department announced that it was closing nearly two dozen American diplomatic missions in the Middle East and North Africa, including facilities in Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Britain said Friday that it would close its embassy in Yemen on Monday and Tuesday because of "increased security concerns." It is unusual for the United States to come across discussions among senior Qaeda operatives about operational planning — through informants, intercepted e-mails or eavesdropping on cellphone calls. So when the high-level intercepts were collected and analyzed this week, senior officials at the C.I.A., State Department and White House immediately seized on their significance. Members of Congress have been provided classified briefings on the matter, officials said Friday. "This was a lot more than the usual chatter," said one senior American official who had been briefed on the information but would not provide details. Spokesmen for the State Department and the C.I.A. also declined to comment on the intercepts. The importance of the intercepts was underscored by a speech that the Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, posted on jihadist forums on Tuesday. In his address, Mr. Zawahri called for attacks on American interests in response to its military actions in the Muslim world and American drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors statements by jihadists. Security analysts said Friday that in the aftermath of the furor over the Obama administration's handling of the attack last year on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, the State Department is now more likely to publicize threat warnings when deemed credible, both to alert the public and to help deter any imminent attacks. "A decision to close this many embassies and issue a global travel warning for a month suggests the threat is real, advanced and imminent but the intelligence is incomplete on where," said Bruce Riedel, a former C.I.A. case officer and a Brookings Institution scholar. The embassy closings come toward the end of the Ramadan holidays and the approaching first anniversary of the terror attack Sept. 11 on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. "We are particularly concerned about the security situation in the final days of Ramadan and into Eid," the British Foreign Office said in a statement, referring to the Muslim holy month that ends Wednesday evening. Obama administration officials publicly declined to discuss what specific information had prompted the increased alarm and alerts, citing a desire to protect classified sources and methods. But intercepting electronic communications is one of the National Security Agency's main jobs, as the documents leaked by Edward J. Snowden, a former N.S.A. contractor, have only underscored.
