Backyard aquaponics: DIY system to farm fish with vegetables
Rob Torcellini bought a $700 greenhouse kit to grow more vegetables in his backyard. Then he added fish to get rid of a mosquito problem and before long he was a committed aquaponic gardener. Now his 10 by 12 foot greenhouse is filled with not only vegetables, but fish. And the best part is: the poo from that fish is what fertilizes his garden. Aquaponics combines fish farming (aquaculture) with the practice of raising plants in water (hydroponics). It's organic by definition: instead of using chemical fertilizers, plants are fertilized by the fish poo (and pesticides/herbicides can't be introduced to kill pests because they could harm the fish). Since the plants don't need dirt, aquaponics allows gardeners to produce more food in less space. And in addition to the vegetables they can grow, most aquaponics gardeners cultivate edible fish as well. In this video, Rob shows us the aquaponics greenhouse in his Connecticut backyard, that he built mostly from scavenged parts, as well as his DIY indoor system where he's growing lettuce under a grow light. Minecraft - Wheat Farm Tutorial Part 1: Automatic Fields
In-depth tutorial on creating an automatic farm setup, ready to be used with any flood gate system. This video is part 1 of a multipart tutorial going over how to design and build an "advanced" automatic wheat farm like the one shown in my video: www.youtube.com In this video I show how to plan and build the fields, irrigation, collection area, and water-routes needed for an automatic farm. It is completely ready to install either a flood gate, as shown in my first video (and the topic of the next tutorial) or a simple Piston. Thank you everyone for the awesome feedback and support for my work, it really helps me out. If you have any way of making an improved design share it with me, or if you used an alternate setup I would love to see it. And of course, if you build it on a server I'd love a tour of it if you'd invite me :) If you enjoyed the video and it helped you at all, share that with me by maybe a little thumbs up action, or comments, or if you really like it and want to see more (and make me feel good) you can even sub and share it! (end of shameless self-plug) I'm working on the Water-gate tutorial as you read this, but its a lot more indepth and is taking me longer to plan out every step of the tutorial to make it good. ===User Pics=== Here is a beautiful set of fields done by drted, who quadrupled the fields and made a massive industrial complex out of the thing. Its gorgeous (and uses pistons). imgur.com He's even taken pictures of harvested seeds to show the ...

How to make a Top Drip Bucket Hydroponic System
HydroponicsFriend.com This video contains instructions for building your own Top Drip Bucket Hydroponic System using a 5 Gallon Bucket, a Mesh Pot Bucket Lid, and the GH Farm Kit. This kit was intended to be used for the General Hydroponics Water Farm System. I knew with a little modification I could build my own system and save a few dollars. The Pumping Column is an "Air Lift Pump". It uses air bubbles instead of an electric water pump to supply the hydroponic nutrient to the plant. I recommend you buy the 10" lid. As you see in the video the 8" will work also with a very easy modification. I'm using this system to have my own home grown heirloom tomatoes. The links I promised are posted on my website here. http "Protofunk by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" creativecommons.org

Organic Farming: Can It Feed Us? (Part 2)
VVH-TV News Special Organic Farming: Can It Feed Us? Part 2 Karl Grossman Chief Investigative Reporter examines Organic Farming on Eastern Long Island. What is organic farming? Organic farming can be defined as an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance is placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, livestock and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed. Reliance on external inputs, whether chemical or organic, is reduced as far as possible. In many European countries, organic agriculture is known as ecological agriculture, reflecting this reliance on ecosystem management rather than external inputs. The objective of sustainability lies at the heart of organic farming and is one of the major factors determining the acceptability or otherwise of specific production practices. The term 'sustainable' is used in its widest sense, to encompass not just conservation of non-renewable resources (soil, energy, minerals) but also issues of environmental, economic and social sustainability. The term 'organic' is best thought of as referring to the concept of the farm as an organism, in which all the component parts - the soil minerals ...

Internet of food: Arduino-based, urban aquaponics in Oakland
The land in West Oakland where Eric Maundu is trying to farm is covered with freeways, roads, light rail and parking lots so there's not much arable land and the soil is contaminated. So Maundu doesn't use soil. Instead he's growing plants using fish and circulating water. It's called aquaponics- a gardening system that combines hydroponics (water-based planting) and aquaculture (fish farming). It's been hailed as the future of farming: it uses less water (up to 90% less than traditional gardening), doesn't attract soil-based bugs and produces two types of produce (both plants and fish). Aquaponics has become popular in recent years among urban gardeners and DIY tinkerers, but Maundu- who is trained in industrial robotics- has taken the agricultural craft one step further and made his gardens smart. Using sensors (to detect water level, pH and temperature), microprocessors (mostly the open-source Arduino microcontroller), relay cards, clouds and social media networks (Twitter and Facebook), Maundu has programmed his gardens to tweet when there's a problem (eg not enough water) or when there's news (eg an over-abundance of food to share). Maundu himself ran from agriculture in his native Kenya- where he saw it as a struggle for land, water and resources. This changed when he realized he could farm without soil and with little water via aquaponics and that he could apply his robotics background to farming. Today he runs Kijani Grows ("Kijani" is Swahili for green), a small ...

Minecraft - Advanced Automatic Wheat Harvesting System
In this video I show off my new greenhouse and demonstrate my Advanced Automatic Wheat Harvesting System and its features. What makes it "Advanced" is that its the first automatic wheat harvesting system that features the ability to turn the flow of water not only on, but off--without the use of mods. In other words, Flood Gates! This is made possible due to a remarkable contraption designed by Zomb13 in the Minecraft forums, which I have implemented into my design and give a tour of in the second half of my video. Credit goes to him, visit his thread and show him your support for his amazing work. Zomb13 Reusable Water Control Machine & Multi-Use Lava www.minecraftforum.net As well as the addition of this water gate, I have outfitted my automatic greenhouse with a low-profile transportation system to send wheat and items to and from my base with no hassle, as well as indicator and warning lights, a custom designed domed glass ceiling, and classy wood paneling (which ironically make my greenhouse anything but "green" in eco-friendly terms, but it looks so good!) I am debating making a tutorial video showing how to make Zomb13's water gate, as well as my greenhouse--as long as I get enough interest. If you would like to see that make sure to leave a comment and Like/subscribe so I can know. If I get enough requests and views to have it worth making I'll work on creating a more in depth how-to. *UPDATE* Tutorial is available! "Minecraft - Wheat Farm Tutorial Part 1 ...

H2O Farm on BBC's Countryfile
www.h2ofarm.co.uk H2O FARM were very excited to be featured on Countryfile 15th January 2012. We had welcomed Adam Henson and the Countryfile team to our facility at the Spanish bit riding school in Dorney prior to Christmas to film the piece and the system looked fantastic on the TV. Adam took a keen interest in the concept of reliably producing tons of high quality fresh fodder every day and we explained the entire process along with actually showing him how we harvested and re-seeded the system. "I really enjoyed meeting Adam and taking part in the piece for countryfile" commented Howard Campion Director of H2O FARM. "The whole process was very interesting with filming taking over 4 hours and covering everything about the system and the value of the feed. Seeing his bulls devour the fresh fodder on prime time TV was a highlight of the 5 minute feature and we have already received numerous enquiries with regard to the hydroponic system".

Losing Ground
Bad federal policy and intensifying storms are washing away the rich dark soils in the Midwest that made this country an agricultural powerhouse and that remain the essential foundation of a healthy and sustainable food system in the future. The Environmental Working Group produced this short film with Atlas Films that provides stark images illustrating how federal farm subsidies and ethanol mandates, piled on top of skyrocketing crop prices are supporting an intensive monoculture that kneecaps any hope for a more resilient and diverse food and farm system. Let's Play Minecraft - Episode 35: Collecting Farm Mobs
I show off the start of my new hostile mob system. The aim is to make it super efficient so that only about 12 spawning pads will be needed total. If I understand things correctly, this 12 spawning pad system will actually be more efficient than if I was to make it 17x17 spawning pads (289). I show a very cool x-ray vision trick that FreakEntertainer taught me via PM on YouTube. I will be using this one often. We also start Levels 3 & 4. I spend most of this video setting up 4, 14x14 (16x16 pattern) grass spawning pads on Level 4 to spawn large amounts of the farm animal mobs. I vastly improve efficiency of the spawning pads by killing incredible amounts of grass surrounding the area. This is a very strange and unique approach to automating farm mob harvesting. You are free to make your own systems based on my idea. Be warned though that it is a lot of work, and you may want to wait to see how successful mine ends up being so that you know if it is worth the effort. I will make a more detailed tutorial about how to setup a similar system in a few weeks if enough people seem interested in the idea. GRACE IS GONE-Dave Matthews& Tim Reynolds-Farmaid 10-4-09
FARMAID 2009 Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. Dave Matthews joined the Farm Aid Board of Directors in 2001. Farm Aid has raised nearly $35 million to promote a strong and resilient family farm system of agriculture. Farm Aid is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to keep family farmers on their land. Farm Aid accomplishes this mission by:Promoting Food from Family Farms Farm Aid stages America's longest running annual concert event that unites farmers, artists, consumers, and concerned citizens to build a powerful movement for good food from family farms. Throughout the year, Farm Aid promotes food from family farms through inspiring and informative television, radio, mail, and web campaigns. Growing the Good Food Movement The Good Food Movement is growing the number of Americans reaching for and demanding family farm-identified, local, organic or humanely-raised food. Farm Aid grants build connections between farmers and consumers creating new markets for family farmers. Helping Farmers Thrive Through 1-800-FARM-AID and www.farmaid.org, Farm Aid staff refers farmers to an extensive resource network of family farm organizations across the country. The referrals support farmers seeking to make transitions to more sustainable and profitable farming practices, and also provide immediate and effective support ...
