Nazneen Contractor (born August 26, 1982) is a Canadian actress, best known for her role as Layla Hourani on CBC's The Border, and, more recently, as Kayla Hassan on 24 (season 8).
She married fellow Canadian actor and 24 co-star Carlo Rota on April 1, 2010
Nigel Bennett (born 19 November 1949) is an English actor/director/writer who has been based in Canada since 1986. He is best known for playing the vampire patriarch Lucien LaCroix in the TV series Forever Knight, for which he won the Canadian Gemini Award for best supporting actor in a dramatic series.
Bennett has also been in a number of major films such as Murder at 1600 and The Skulls, and many, many other TV series. He had recurring roles in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues and Lexx. He also starred in a series of Oatmeal Crisp cereal commercials in the 1990s.
Teaming up with writer P.N. Elrod, Bennett co-authored a series of acclaimed "James Bond with fangs" vampire adventure novels for Baen Books. The "Lord Richard, Vampire" trilogy includes Keeper of the King, His Father's Son, and Siege Perilous. He also contributed the short story "Wolf and Hound" to "Dracula's London," a collection edited by Elrod for Ace Science Fiction.
In 2006, he appeared in the Ken Finkleman miniseries At The Hotel, for which he was nominated for a Gemini Award.
The Border is a Canadian drama that aired on CBC Television and 20 other TV networks worldwide. It was created by Peter Raymont, Lindalee Tracey, Janet MacLean and Jeremy Hole of White Pine Pictures. The Executive in Charge of Production is Janice Dawe. Episodes in the first season were directed by John Fawcett, Michael DeCarlo, Ken Girotti, Kelly Makin, Brett Sullivan and Philip Earnshaw. The first season had a total budget of 20 million dollars, with about 1.5 million dollars per episode.
The series is set in Toronto and follows agents of the fictitious Immigration and Customs Security (ICS) agency. ICS was created by the Government of Canada to deal with trans-border matters concerning Canadian national security including terrorism and smuggling.
The cancellation of The Border was announced by the CBC after three seasons were aired.
The show stars many Canadian television actors such as James McGowan, Graham Abbey and Catherine Disher. Sofia Milos and Daisy Beaumont are the only non-Canadian actresses to star, as United States Department of Homeland Security special agent Bianca LaGarda and British intelligence agent Charlotte Bates respectively.
James McGowan is a Canadian actor.
James McGowan was born on May 30, 1960, in Montreal, Quebec, the youngest of John and June McGowan’s three sons. He grew up in Dollard-des-Ormeaux and attended John Abbott College where he studied theater. James graduated from Concordia University with a B.A. in Communications. After graduating, he took a job as a copy writer at an advertising agency rather than pursuing an acting career as he did not believe he could make a living acting. He took a "a mind-numbing 9-to-5 job” in the audio-visual department at McGill University. While there he got in touch with a friend who was directing plays at the Montreal university expecting to pursue acting simply as a hobby.
"I needed some kind of artistic outlet and I've always loved the process," McGowan said. "I started out slowly doing student plays and plays at the William Shatner building.” "It was immediate," he said. "As soon as I got on and got the first words out, then it was just, 'Wow, I love this. I've always loved this.” It wasn’t easy breaking into television in Toronto given his age."The truth of the matter is that, at 36, you're trying to audition for parts and you're up against guys who've been doing it for 15 years and have résumés that reflect that. It was hard at first to just get to see people."
Written by Russ Ballard and Dewey Bunnell
You must be lost in a faraway land
I searched forever your footprints in the sand
I feel you need me, I have to answer
That desperate call that I do not understand
A burning bridge, a lonely highway
Another dark night thinking alone
What could've happened, am I just dreaming
It doesn't matter but there's one thing that I know
If I could make it to the border
If I could make it to the coast
If I could make it to the border
I'd be in the arms of the girl I love the most
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Make it to the border
So on and on I keep on running
To make the border before the light
Just one more river, then I can make it
Again you'll be in my arms tonight
If I could make it to the border
If I could make it to the coast
If I could make it to the border
I'd be in the arms of the girl I love the most
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Make it to the border
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Make it to the border
If I could make it to the border
If I could make it to the coast
If I could make it to the border
I'd be in the arms of the girl I love the most
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Make it to the border
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Make it to the border
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Make it to the border
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Dry forever the sun blinds off the whitewashed walls
Unbelieving she looks up from the unswept floor
You don't have to go you don't have to tell me
All that talk of lofty causes wrapped in foolish pride
That's a lie
That you don't have to tell me
I don't wanna hear how wisdom walks beside you
Or how God is inside you again
No wire marks the border
No fence or wall
No town breaks this horizon
Nothing at all
Dust surrounds her the men go hungry for disaster
All they leave behind are
The old and useless and the broken
That never will be mended
I don't wanna hear you're captured by the madness
Of ideas long discredited from other people's minds
They're all lies
That you don't have to tell me
All that comes of this is poverty and hardship
Still you don't absorb a word I say
But now there is a border
A line of blood
Now men patrol the border
But they're dead
Somewhere a bird is flying oh
Somewhere the wind is sighing oh
I hope it brings you comfort
Cos it's surely no good to me
This wind blows me down
And cuts me like a knife
And now the darkness and coldness
That freezes out illusion
Restores the picture gives back the pieces
And lays them on the empty floor
I don't want to hear so you don't have to tell me
How you rewrite history a little every day
Till it's lies
That you don't have to tell me
I don't want to hear how good it really has been
How wonderful the troubles we shared
No I don't want to hear so you don't have to tell me
They meet down in Brownsville, in a little border dive
She was just looking for someone to dance with, he was
just looking for a fight
They knew what they what they wanted, but that's about
all they knew
They liked to be with each other, just to see what the
other would do
They're walking on the border, love that wild side
They're walking on the border, ain't they feeling fine
The sun fell on Loretta, asleep in the back of the van
Jim smoked his Camel, stared across the Rio Grande
He said "Hey wake up Loretta, we got some work to do
Got to see a friend of a friend, help a friend down in
Para crud"
They're walking on the border, love that wild side
They're walking on the border, ain't they feeling fine
Back in Brownsville Texas, a week on down the road
They ran out of American money, ran out of Mexico
There was kissing on the corner, ain't it good to be
alive
Then they crashed the door of the liquor store, she
handed him his .45
They're walking on the border, love that wild side
They're walking on the border, ain't they feeling fine
Walking on the border, love that wild side
We, we must go on now, wherever people go who go on together
And now, try to hold on now, too many of us have run, run out of the circle
Can you hear me, are you breathing
I need you near me, no I'm not leaving
I'm in no hurry to do this alone
I am standing here with my arms open wide
I am waiting here, heart in my hand on the border
Dreams, dreams may seduce you
But sooner or later they're gone and you're back where you started
Oh look, look at these scars now
How many wounds does it take before we are healing
Can we go on now, from what we have done now
Yes we must go on, our questions unanswered
I know what we're after is right here in our hands
Chorus:
I am standing here with my arms open wide
I keep waiting here, heart in my hand on the border
And every step we take gives us the strength to go on
And all the love we make gets us closer to home
I can see it all so clearly now, I can hear your voice in a song
And it burns down inside my soul, it takes me down this winding road
We can find our way back home
We, we must go on now, wherever people go who go on together
(chorus)
Oh, standing here with my arms open wide
And I keep waiting here, on the borderline
And every step we take gives us the strength to go on
And all the love we make gets us closer to home
Gotta get away from THE BORDER
There’s too many memories here
And all the things that I used to love
Became everything I fear
And I wanna recognize
But I just don’t think it’s you
Cuz every time I look into your eyes
I swear I can see right through
So I run and I run
Just to find I’m standing still
Cuz I’m trying to move
Without breaking any shells
And I’m frozen in this state
Trying not to cross the line
But I guess it’s just a matter of time
Till I cross THE BORDER line
The water tastes like poison
The air’s so hard to breathe
And the skin I’m in is starting to drive me crazy
I gotta get away from me
So I run and I run
Just to find I’m standing still
Cuz I’m trying to move
Without breaking any shells
And I’m frozen in this state
Trying not to cross the line
But I guess it’s just a matter of time
Time till I can finally breathe
Go whereever my heart leads
Get to know myself again
Learn to be my own best friend
Left this weight up off my shoulders
And finally be free
But I run and I run
Just to find I’m standing still
Cuz I’m trying to move
Without breaking any shells
And I’m frozen in this state
Trying not to cross the line
I run and I run
Just to find I’m standing still
Cuz I’m trying to move
Without breaking any shells
And I’m frozen in this state
Trying not to cross the line
But I guess it’s just a matter of time
It’s a matter of time
Until I cross THE BORDER line
