RTW/Roma Surrectum II: The Battle of Watling Street 61 AD
The Battle of Watling Street 61 AD. 10,000 Roman Legionaires and auxiliaries led by the Roman Governor of Britain Gaius Suetonius Paulinus crushed completely a vast army of revolting Britons numbering between a 100,000 to 230,000 including wemen and children, led by Queen of the Iceni tribe Boudicea aka Boudicca. Under the leadership of Boudicea the Iceni were joined by the Trinovantes any many other Britons. They have revolted after the Roman centurions went too far and raped Boudicea and her 2 daughters and plundered the area. The vast host she gathered, fell furiously on the undefended Roman town of Camulodunum (Colchester) were Roman veterans and their families have settled and slaughtered the whole lot. A force of roughly 2,500 legionaires from the IX legion was sent to aid their brethren but were ambushed by Boudicea's men on their way, lost some 3 cohorts and the rest retreated back to camp. The revolting Britons killed & plundered every Roman town they came across including Londinium (London) and spared no one. So the Roman goverenor Paulinus gathered all men he could muster roughly 10,000 men and marched to stop Boudicea. His forces included the XIV legion, Veterans from the XX and the rest were Auxiliaries from the neighbourhood. The Romans positioned themselves near Watling street, waiting for Boudicea and her army, on a hill between a narrow defile with woods on their backs and flanks so they would not be surrounded. Paulinus ordered his army to form a wedge-like formation and when the barbarians approached, shouting and crying out their warcries, the Romans threw their pila into the densly-packed Britons and attacked with sword and shield. The slaughter was horrible, the disciplined Romans hacked, butchered and pierced their foes mercilessly. Soon the barbarians realised all is lost and turned to flight but their own families and wagons on the rear had blocked their retreat and proved disasterous for them. 80,000 Britons lay dead and the Romans lost as few as 400. It was a most significant victory for Rome. Boudicea ended her life with poison and Gaius Suetonius Paulinus won a decisive victory over the Britons and crushed the rebellion.
