Smirnoff / Pharrell Williams: Start Pure
AEAF 2012 • Finalist (TVC/VFX)
APDG 2012 • Finalist (Design on an Advertisement) • Finalist (Visual Effects)
“How you start is everything,” says the stoic Pharrell, standing in a white, spaceship-like room. “I start pure — with a blank canvas."
Featuring his track 'Truth or Dare', Pharrell shows us how he creates layer after layer of sound to mix a track. First he adds adds the beat, trying out a round of percussionists, then the “groove”. As Pharrell sleepily points his finger, visions of instrumentalists - personified audio samples - spring to life, filling the room. “Then, the vocals,” he commands, and the white space is transformed into a packed club, its imperturbable creator above, looking on calmly at the crowd. The result: a perfectly mixed, full impact sound. The parallels to a Smirnoff mixed drink are obvious enough.
Directed by Darryl Ward of Curious Films, Cutting Edge had two weeks to create a minute-long VFX heavy piece for Smirnoff and Leo Burnett Sydney, as well as 30' and 15' versions. From the architectural pre-vis to the transitions to the rotoscoping and compositing, it was a tight turn-around.
An added feature of the campaign will be that smart phone users will be able to "Shazam" the commercial to access additional footage and further information on the campaign from an exclusive micro-website. This is a first for a TV commercial in Australia.
Says Pharrell: "I like how Smirnoff present a pure vodka, perfect for mixing - this is what I try to do with my music, so I agreed to be a part of this campaign."
For the music afficianados, watch closely for appearances of actual musicians (not actors!) such as Prescott Ellison, Stevie Starlight, and blues great Roy Gaines.

Mr. Green "Live from the Streets" featuring Peter Gaffney
Presented by Animal Bikes and Chess Move Cartel, Live from the Streets is a video series created by beatmaker Mr. Green and director Sam Lipman-Stern. The series is based around showcasing street musicians and turning their performances into hip hop beats. New episodes will be released
every two weeks.
In the second episode of Live From The Streets you find yourself at Philadelphia's First Friday with Peter Gaffney, the co-founder/director of Cabaret Redlight. Cabaret Redlight is a Philly based theater group that performs vaudeville, burlesque, spoken word and puppet theater, set to original music by the band The Blazing Cherries. Peter was playing his accordion on the street while promoting for his show "The Man from Orphan Island" (which unfortunately is no longer running) and was cool enough to agree to be a part of Live from the Streets. The beat "Live Gypsy Swing Music" will be available on itunes and at greenhiphop.com very soon. For more information on Peter and his group, check out cabaretredlight.com.
If you know of a street musician or sound that you would
like to see in a future episode, contact:
livefromstreet@gmail.com
A full Live from the Streets hip hop album
featuring rappers and singers is in the works.

The Music of Tim Green
Boat Safety Films collaborated with saxophonist extra-oridnairé Tim Green on this artist profile that explores his relationship to music as well as his upcoming album.
On the web: www.timgreenmusic.com
Bio:
Saxophonist, composer and arranger, TIM GREEN, is a rising star on the International music scene.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Tim was inspired to pursue music by a family of musicians at the young age of 10. While attending high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts, he was selected to be one of the 25 members (out of 500 auditioners) of the Grammy High School All-Star band that performed at the Grammy Award ceremony in Los Angeles, California. Green then received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2004, where he studied with world-renowned instructors such as Dick Oatts, Gary Dial, Bob Mintzer and Steve Slagle. During that period, he honed his skills performing at jazz clubs around New York and around the country. In the summer of 2003 he was invited to be a part of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass summer program, where he studied with Christian McBride, Lewis Nash, Benny Green, Wallace Roney and Russell Malone. In May 2007, Green graduated from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California with a masters degree in Jazz Studies. While attending the Institute, Green studied, performed and toured nationally and internationally with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard.
Since then, Green has had the opportunity to perform with various artists such as Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Jon Faddis, Christian McBride, Carl Allen, Rodney Whitaker, Hubert Laws, Kenny Burrell, Joe Chambers and the Moving Picture Orchestra , Patrice Rushen, Gary Thomas, Sean Jones , Jeremy Pelt , Warren Wolf , Larry Willis , Cyrus Chestnut , Rodney Green , Greg Hutchinson , Peter Martin , Queen Latifah , Mo’ Horns, Dontae Winslow, Gary Bartz and Wynton Marsalis. Green is also a member of the “Soulful Symphony”, conducted by Darin Atwater, which recently received a residency at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore Maryland.
After having the opportunity to play and/or record with world- renowned gospel artists like Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin , Donnie McCurkin , Yolanda Adams , Mary Mary, Men Of Standard, Joe Pace and Youthful Praise gospel music has grown to be one of Tim’s strongest influences. In August of 2005, Green released his debut album entitled “Divine Inspiration” on G Major Records, which features hymns and spiritual songs. He has performed on the nationally televised Stella Gospel Music Awards, BET’s hit gospel competition show “Sunday Best “ and has been working with his own band that features all original music with the jazz and gospel sound. Recent performances include places such as Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the Mercy Soul Quintet.
Another highlight for Green was finishing as one of the three finalists for the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2008. He ultimately finished second in the final voting, but due to his fast-rising repuatation in the music community long before the competition, he was already considered first in the eyes of many.
Always giving back to younger musicians and to his community, Green currently serves as the saxophone professor at Morgan State University and also teaches at his former high school, the Baltimore School For The Arts.
Fire, brimstone, and a deep spiritual connection with his listeners is what best describes Green’s style. It is apparent that Tim Green’s fire will burn brightly for a long time.

Stop
Stop, created by choreographer Susan Marshall, is a music video featuring an original score by Pulitzer prize-winning composer David Lang, played by members of the electric guitar quartet Dither and Mantra Percussion. Stop is a virtual companion piece to Susan Marshall & Company's new dance performance Play/Pause, which will tour the US this fall. Stop references the dance moves and sleek production value of popular music videos, but introduces abstraction by adding choreographic complexity, and stripping away context to make the dancers' movements the primary element.
==Play/Pause tour dates==
September 19-21, 2013 :: The Dance Center of Columbia Chicago
October 5, 2013 :: ASU Gammage
October 29-31, 2013 :: The Kennedy Center

PETER GREEN'S FLEETWOOD MAC - 1970 - "Albatross"
Peter Green (born Peter Allen Greenbaum, 29 October 1946) is a British blues rock guitarist and the founder of the band Fleetwood Mac. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his work with the group, Green's songs have been recorded by artists such as Santana, Aerosmith, Midge Ure, Tom Petty, Gary Moore and Judas Priest. A major figure and bandleader in the "second great epoch" of the British blues movement, Green inspired B. B. King to say, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have both lauded his guitar playing. Green's playing was marked with idiomatic string bending and vibrato and economy of style. Though he played other guitars, he is best known for deriving a unique tone from his 1959 Gibson Les Paul. He was ranked 38th in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". His tone on the Bluesbreakers instrumental "The Super-Natural" was rated as one of the 50 greatest of all time by Guitar Player. In June 1996 Green was voted the third-best guitarist of all time in Mojo magazine. Green made his recording debut in 1966 with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers on the album A Hard Road (1967), which featured two of his own compositions, "The Same Way" and "The Supernatural". The latter was one of Green's first instrumentals, which would soon become a trademark. So proficient was he that his musician friends bestowed upon him the nickname "The Green God". In 1967, Green decided to form his own blues band and left the Bluesbreakers. Green's new band, with ex-Bluesbreaker Mick Fleetwood on drums and Jeremy Spencer on guitar, was initially called "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac featuring Jeremy Spencer". Bob Brunning was temporarily employed on bass guitar, as Green's first choice Bluesbreakers' bassist John McVie was not yet ready to join the band. Within a month they played at the Windsor National Jazz and Blues Festival in August 1967 and were quickly signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label. Their repertoire consisted mainly of blues covers and originals, mostly written by Green but some by slide guitarist Spencer. The band's first single, "I Believe My Time Ain't Long" with "Rambling Pony" as a B-side, did not chart but their eponymous debut album made a significant impression, remaining in the British charts for over a year. By September 1967, John McVie had replaced Brunning. Their second studio album Mr. Wonderful was released in 1968 and continued the formula of the first album. In the same year they scored a hit with Green's "Black Magic Woman" (later covered more successfully by Santana), followed by the guitar instrumental "Albatross" (1969), which reached number one in the British singles charts. More hits written by Green followed, including "Oh Well", "Man of the World" (both 1969) and the ominous "The Green Manalishi" (1970). In 1969, the group signed with Warner Bros. Records and recorded their fourth studio album "Then Play On" that year, prominently featuring the group's new third guitarist Danny Kirwan. Spencer, however, made virtually no contribution to Then Play On, owing to his reported refusal to play on any of Green's original material. Beginning with "Man of the World"'s sad lyric, Green's bandmates began to notice changes in his state of mind. He was taking large doses of LSD, grew a beard and began to wear robes and a crucifix. Mick Fleetwood recalls Green becoming concerned about wealth: "I had conversations with Peter Green around that time and he was obsessive about us not making money, wanting us to give it all away. And I'd say, 'Well you can do it, I don't wanna do that, and that doesn't make me a bad person". While touring Europe in late March 1970, Green binged on LSD at a party at a commune in Munich, an incident cited by Fleetwood Mac manager Clifford Davis as the crucial point in his mental decline. Fleetwood Mac roadie Dinky Dawson remembers that Green went to the party with another roadie, Dennis Keane, and that when Keane returned to the band's hotel to explain that Green would not leave the commune, Keane, Dawson and Mick Fleetwood travelled there to fetch Green. By contrast, Green stated that he had fond memories of jamming at the commune when speaking in 2009: "I had a good play there, it was great, someone recorded it, they gave me a tape. There were people playing along, a few of us just fooling around and it was... yeah it was great." He told Jeremy Spencer at the time "That's the most spiritual music I've ever recorded in my life." After a final performance on 20 May 1970, Green left Fleetwood Mac.- published: 04 Dec 2013

Here's a decidedly funky video attempting to show the different sounds in the "Peter Green Mod". The magnet of the neck pickup has been flipped 180 degrees so the center position is 'out of phase'. Keep your eye on the pickup selector. Hopefully you will hear the differences in the sounds.- published: 20 Jun 2011
