There were only three flag designs adopted, with later, minor variants made to those designs, that served as the official national flags of the Confederate States of America and used during its existence from 1861 to 1865. Since the end of the American Civil War, personal and official use of Confederate flags, and of flags derived from these, has continued under some controversy.
The state flags of Mississippi and Georgia are based on Confederate flags. The flag of North Carolina is based on the state's 1861 flag, which dates back to the Confederacy and appears to be based on the first Confederate flag. The flags of Alabama and Florida appear to be of Confederate inspiration, but are actually derived from the Cross of Burgundy flag, which flew over the territory of Spanish Florida.
The first official flag of the Confederacy, called the "Stars and Bars," was flown from March 4, 1861, to May 1, 1863.
The first national flag of the Confederacy, inspired by Austria's national flag, was designed by Prussian artist Nicola Marschall in Marion, Alabama. The Stars and Bars flag was adopted March 4, 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama and raised over the dome of that first Confederate Capitol. Marschall also designed the Confederate Army uniform.
"Battle Flag" (or "Battleflag") is a song by Pigeonhed (Shawn Smith and Steve Fisk) from their 1997 album The Full Sentence. It was remixed by Lo Fidelity Allstars featuring Pigeonhed for Pigeonhed’s Flash Bulb Emergency Overflow Cavalcade of Remixes album and later included and released as a single from the Lo Fidelity Allstars album How To Operate With A Blown Mind. Though it failed to garner much success in the United Kingdom, it gained modest airplay on both radio and MTV in the United States. It was also extremely successful on alternative rock radio stations in the United States, peaking at #6 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, the only U.S. chart appearance by either Lo Fidelity Allstars or Pigeonhed. The song also reached #36 in the UK.

Confederate flag removed from Pensacola Bay Center 12 11 2014
Escambia County will no longer fly the Confederate battle flag or the Spanish, French or British flags at the Pensacola Bay Center. After an emotional discussion, the Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 to remove the five-flag display from the county property and replace it with the U.S. flag.
Pointing to the U.S. flag behind his seat in the commission chambers, Commissioner Doug Underhill said, “This is the flag that I wore on my uniform when I went into harm’s way. This is the flag that is draped over the coffins of our soldiers when they are returned home. This is flag that we all swear our oaths under. This is the flag of Escambia County.”
Underhill’s statement came after dozens of statements from the audience both for and against keeping at least some form of the Confederacy flag at the Pensacola Bay Center, the only county property that flew all five flags.
At the public forum before the regular meeting, all the comments were in opposition to the Confederate battle flag.
Catrina Ramos presented the board 175 petitions to take down the Confederate flag. “The flag symbolizes hate, disenfranchisement and the great divide in our nation,” she said. “We hold our graduations at the civic center. When I walk out and see that flag, it tells me that I don’t matter, my accomplishments don’t matter.”
Diane Krummel talked about the race riots in Escambia during the 1970s and how the Confederate flag was part of them when Escambia High changed its team name from “Rebels” to “Gators.” “It divides Escambia County,” she said. “The flag is another thorn in the side of Escambia County.”
Rev. Julie Cain put an armband with a Nazi swastika on her arm and said that it, too, symbolizes hate. Though it’s part of German history, that flag is not flown in Germany today.
“The Confederate flags has multiple meanings, but it is associated with a very racist regime,” said Cain. “It is a very inappropriate for a public building and encourages hatred and racist acts.”
Retired Marine Col. Jim Smith said the first flag was the only Confederate flag that actually flew over the city of Pensacola during the 18 months before it surrendered to the Union.
Larry William, a Navy veteran, said the he and Col. Smith both served their country. They are not asking the county to fly the Marine Corps or U.S. Navy flags to honor those who died while in those uniforms.
After the citizens spoke, the commissioner weighed in. Grover Robinson, who was the commissioner who brought forth the discussion item, talked about his family’s history, which included ancestors that fought in the American Revolution and the Civil War. He also talked about his grandfather who fought for the rights of his African-American clients in the 1950s and who later became a judge.
“I’ve seen both sides of this issue,” said Commissioner Robinson. “I don’t see how we can continue to fly the battle flag.”
He made the motion to replace the battle flag with the first flag used by the Confederacy – “Stars & Bars.” “For the past 15 years, this is the flag used by the city of Pensacola, Fiesta of Five Flags, Five Flags Speedway, and (pointing to a member in the audience) our church,” said the commissioner.
Before Robinson received a second to his motion, Commissioner Lumon May offered an substitute motion, asking the board to first agree to take down the battle flag before deciding what other flag to fly. His motion passed 5-0.
Commissioner Robinson made a motion for the first flag, but didn’t receive a second. Commissioner Wilson Robertson said he preferred the third flag.
In 2000, Commissioner Robertson made the motion to fly that battle flag at the civic center, and a few of the citizens questioned his decision. The commissioner responded to his critics.
“I’m proud of my Southern heritage,” said Robertson. “I will not apologize for my vote (in 2000). “
Commissioner May seized the moment and made the motion to take down the remaining flags, except for the U.S. flag.
“That is the flag that flies over every other county building,” said May. “It’s flag that our children pledge allegiance to in school.”
When it was clear that May and Underhill had the support of the majority of the board, Commissioner Robinson asked that they simply rescind the previous action that took down only the Confederate battle flag and vote in one motion to take down at the Pensacola Bay Center all flags except that U.S. flag.
The motion passed 4-1, with Commissioner Wilson Robertson voting against the motion. http://ricksblog.biz/pensacola-bay-center-no-longer-to-fly-confederate-flag/

Confederate flags were reportedly burned and buried on Monday in several southern states as part of a movement to get rid of the flag and its offensive historical context.
A total of 13 ceremonies were held on Memorial Day. While not every ceremony involved the burning of the flag, in each, the flag was buried in a series of WSMV called "funerals."
In Nashville, Tenn., the flag was burned and buried and artists and participants took turn delivering eulogies, according to WSMV.
In Clarkston, Ga. the ceremony was organized by Terone Allen who said the burial was symbolic, according to television station WTVM.

Why the Confederate flag started trending after the Charleston shooting
In the wake of the mass shooting in South Carolina, the image of the Confederate flag started trending online - driven by liberals who blame it for stoking racism in America.
As news broke of a mass shooting which killed nine in a church in Charleston in the state of South Carolina, a mostly predictable reaction developed online. But alongside trending phrases such as "Charleston shooting" and "Black lives matter", another term became a top US trend on Twitter: "Confederate".
It's a reference to the red and blue Confederate battle flag, which 150 years after the American Civil War is still flown outside South Carolina's state house. The flag has long been a contentious issue across the American south, where some see it as a symbol of slavery, racism and a failed breakaway nation, while others consider it an essential part of southern US heritage and an homage to freedom and military service. The debate sometimes - but not always - breaks down along racial lines. (Here's an essential primer on the flag controversy by the BBC's Tom Geoghegan.) In a measure of just how divisive the flag is, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday on a case involving whether the flag could be banned from customised car number plates in Texas.

Supreme Court: Texas OK to reject Confederate flag plate
The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Texas is allowed to reject a license plate design that featured a Confederate battle flag.
In a 5-4 decision authored by Justice Stephen Breyer, the court held that, "When the government speaks, it is not barred by the Free Speech Clause from determining the content of what it says."
"We hold that Texas's specialty license plate designs constitute government speech," Breyer wrote in an opinion joined by the unusual line-up of Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Elena Kagan. Breyer said that "Texas was consequently entitled to refuse to issue" the plates that were submitted by a group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and prominently featured the controversial Confederate battle flag.
The group sought to honor the reputation of soldiers who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Breyer said that because private speech was not at issue in the case, "just as Texas cannot require SCV to convey the State's ideological message, SCV cannot force Texas to include a Confederate battle flag on its specialty license plates."

Texas Can Reject Confederate Flag License Plates, Supreme Court Rules
The US supreme court has ruled against a Confederate veterans group seeking the right to put the controversial Confederate flag on Texas speciality license plates. A debate over the Confederate flag has made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Texas is trying to keep the flag off specialized license plates. So, do states have the right to ban the Confederate flag?

This is me explaining my view points of the confederate flag. Granted I love the south and I plan on being in the south for the rest of my life. I just do not like this particular symbol that people use for southern pride. Because it is not. It is racist pride.

"A lot of lives have been lost around this confederate flag," Allen said. “If you don't see the hate that comes along with it, that has come along with it, if you don't see the racism behind what has been founded with the usage of it, then you're ignoring it.”
Another event was held in Orlando, Fla. and involved a ceremony in which the flag was put into a box and burned before the ashes were scattered across a wetlands pond, television station WKMG reported.
The Orlando event was reportedly organized by Julian Chambliss, the chair of the Department of History and coordinator of the Africa & African-American Studies program at Rollins College.
"That part of our history needs to be buried," Chambliss said.
WKMG also spoke with a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans who said that, while he respected the movement’s right to free speech, he didn’t appreciate that the ceremony was held on Memorial Day.
"That's a day for the soldiers,” John Adams told the station. “Respect that day and let our boys who gave their lives rest in peace."
According to WSMV, the events were meant to commemorate the work of John Sims, the artist who conceptualized the movement. Sims' work has reportedly focused on the Confederate flag for the past 15 years. Past projects include a piece called the “Recoloration Proclamation,” in which Sims used black, red, and green to re-color the flag with the colors of the Black Liberation movement, according to WSMV.

Black Artist Set to Burn and Bury the Confederate Flag on Memorial Day 2015
Black Artist Set to Burn and Bury the Confederate Flag on Memorial Day 2015. Artist John Sims said that here in America we have the right to fly whatever flag we want. Also, we have the right to burn whatever flag we want to burn. The Confederate flag is a flag of terror from its use by the KKK in the 1920s to the anti-civil-rights movement in the 50s and 60s.

Why the Confederate flag started trending after the Charleston shooting

ABC Speculates On Shooting: Black Attorney General? Confederate Flag?
ABC on Thursday used the tragic shooting in South Carolina to wildly speculate and link other topics. Reporter Pierre Thomas offered, "Remember, the new attorney general, who is African-American, is a daughter of the south and the child of a Baptist minister." In a separate segment, correspondent Good Morning America's Paula Faris interjected, "One trending topic is whether or not South Carolina will fly the Confederate flag on top of the state capitol at half-staff."

Supreme Court: Ok for Texas to Reject Confederate Flag Plate
The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that states have the right to decline to issue controversial license plate designs — such as one featuring the confederate battle flag — even if they set up programs through which private groups can request specialty plates.
Justice Stephen Breyer, joined by the court’s other liberals and conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, concluded that such license plates amount to government speech and that allowing private parties to propose designs does not convert them to the kind of public forum where the First Amendment dictates that government be evenhanded.

In a 5-4 decision authored by Justice Stephen Breyer the Court held that, "When the government speaks, it is not barred by the Free Speech Clause from determining the content of what it says."
"We hold that Texas's specialty license plate designs constitute government speech," Breyer wrote in an opinion joined by the unusual line up of Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Elena Kagan. Breyer said that "Texas was consequently entitled to refuse to issue" the plates that were submitted by a group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and prominently featured the controversial Confederate battle flag.

Texas Can Reject Confederate Flag License Plates, Supreme Court Rules
The US supreme court has ruled against a Confederate veterans group seeking the right to put the controversial Confederate flag on Texas speciality license plates. The case, Walker v Sons of Confederate Veterans, centered on first amendment issues of free speech and to what extent a speciality license plate represents the views of the state that issued it or the drivers who put it on their car. In a rare move, conservative justice Clarence Thomas joined his liberal colleagues in finding that Texas can reject vanity license plates including the flag.

The ignorance of the confederate flag
This is me explaining my view points of the confederate flag. Granted I love the south and I plan on being in the south for the rest of my life. I just do not like this particular symbol that people use for southern pride. Because it is not. It is racist pride.

Activists Burn & Bury Confederate Flags In Memorial Day 'Funerals'
