Battlefield Iraq: Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province
Battlefield Iraq Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province. Heavy Fighting Firefights And Clashes In Iraqs Anbar Province. Since 2014 the Anbar Province is place of fierce fighting between Sunni Iraqi Militias and the Iraqi Army. The main area of the clashes are the citys Ramadi and Falluja where a strong sunni population is located. According to Officials and witnesses, the Iraq government mainly has lost control over the strategic citys, west of Baghdad. The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi. Al-Qaeda black flags have been seen on government and police vehicles captured by the fighters. The army has besieged Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, and has launched air strikes on the city. Security forces backed by tanks on battled militants in Iraq's Anbar province, where fighting has displaced thousands and sparked warnings of rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings. Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja. The takeover of Fallujah and parts of Ramadi is the first time that tribal fighters have exercised such open control in major Iraqi cities since the height of the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003. The fighting has left more than a hundred people dead and forced thousands of Falluja's residents to flee the city, to Baghdad, northern Iraq and the southern city of Karbala, where Shiite leaders are hosting the displaced families in housing built for religious pilgrims. The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants. Iraq's prime minister has urged residents and tribes in Anbar province to "expel" al-Qaeda-linked fighters to avoid an all-out battle - remarks that may signal an imminent military move to retake the former insurgent stronghold. The Insurgents mainly ambushing Iraqi Army convoys in urban areas and attacking small check points and police stations with small arms, rpgs and ieds. The Iraqi Army repels with Air Strikes and armored infantry units. The ISIL rebels were trying to bring the battle to the cities of Anbar and Fallujah because there's no security there and they know they will be thoroughly defeated in the desert. The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008. Officials have blamed the upsurge in violence to a resurgent Al-Qaeda emboldened by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, but the government has itself faced criticism for not doing enough to address the concerns of Iraq's disaffected Sunni Arab minority ahead of April elections. Iraqi Security Forces Fight Militants in Anbar Province - 3 January 2014
Iraqi Security Forces Fight Militants in Anbar Province - 3 January 2014 Special forces have clashed with hundreds of Sunni militants in two Iraqi cities. The clashes with the fighters from the al-Qaeda linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) were in Fallujah and Ramadi, where some 250 fighters were equipped with armed vehicles. Both cities are in the province of Anbar, where Sunni militant activity has been on the rise. At least 23 people were killed in militant attacks elsewhere in Iraq. Sunni Arabs in Iraq claim they have been targeted and politically marginalised by the Shia-led government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a charge the prime minister denies. The fighting in Ramadi was reported to have eased by Thursday evening, but it was not clear whether authorities had totally re-established control in either city. A senior police officer in Anbar province had earlier been quoted as saying ISIS fighters had seized at least 10 police stations and had freed a number of prisoners. ISIS fighters posted videos of themselves burning government vehicles, setting up checkpoints and issuing challenges to the authority of Mr Maliki. Sunni tribal fighters also took to the streets, with reports that some were fighting on the government side. Also on Thursday, authorities arrested a Shia militia leader in what may be seen as an attempt to appease Sunni sentiment. Wathiq al-Batat is the commander of the Mukhtar army, a recently formed Shia militia which was implicated in a rocket attack last week. Iraqi air force strikes al-Qaeda-linked militants in Anbar Province
Subscribe to ITN News: http://goo.gl/zRYiYn Ahead of a possible assault on the city of Fallujah, Iraqi government forces battling an al-Qaeda offensive near the Syrian border have launched air strikes on suspected militant locations in Anbar Province. Government officials in western Anbar have also recently met with tribal leaders to urge them to help repel the militants, who have taken over parts of Ramadi and Fallujah, strategic cities on the Euphrates River. Al-Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and ISIL have been steadily tightening their grip in Anbar in recent months, in a bid to create a Sunni Muslim state. But last week's capture of positions in Ramadi and large parts of Fallujah was the first time in years Sunni insurgents have taken ground in the province's major cities, and actually held the positions for days. In Fallujah, ISIL's task has been made easier by disgruntled tribesmen who have joined its fight against the government. Thousands of people who live in Fallujah have fled the city. However, on Thursday morning, there were some reports claiming the situation has stabalised, accompanied by calls for residents to return home. Report by Mark Morris. A suicide bomber has killed at least 15 people in a separate incident north east of Baghdad. In the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi jihadist militants have posted videos of themselves burning government vehicles and setting up checkpoints. Their action is seen as a direct challenge to the authority of the Shia Prime MInister, Nuri al-Malaki. "The military operations in Anbar have political goals to achieve. Al-Maliki wants to achieve security and so make political gains in the province, but at the same time he doesn't want to present gifts to the Sunni politicians that he has always accused of being involved with terrorism," said Ali al-Sari a political commentator. The air strikes come on the back of operations in December including one codenamed "Iron Hammer" which was launched after at least 18 soldiers including a commander were killed by militants. Iraq - Iraqi Armed Forces clash with Militants in Anbar Province
In Anbar Province, Islamic extremists in league with al Qaeda have taken the city of Fallujah -- where U.S. forces fought a ferocious battle in 2004. The fight today is between the two main branches of the Islamic faith -- the Sunni and the Shia -- which are now at war with eachother. Last week, the Iraqi military went on the attack, firing at extremists who had overrun Mosques, jails and police stations in the main towns of Anbar, Fallujah and Ramadi. The insurgents are reported to still be in control of Fallujah. Armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenades, they're battling local tribesmen, and the largely U.S. trained and equipped Iraqi army. The violence is a spillover from the savage civil war next door in Syria, where al Qaeda-linked militants have exported their cause and their men across the border. They're mostly Sunni Muslims who want to rule this part of the world, and impose hardline Shariah law. These days though, their main enemy is no longer the U.S. military- it's the millions of Shiite Muslims who live there, and the Shiite controlled government that rules Iraq. Over the past year, this religious conflict has grown. In the country America believed was headed for stable democracy, nearly 8,000 civilians were killed in 2013- a return to the kind of violence Iraqis haven't seen since the worst years of the war.- published: 10 Jan 2014

Suicide Bomber Kills Anti-ISIL Leader In Iraq's Anbar Province
One of the leaders of Iraq's pro-government Sunni tribal fighters was killed late Tuesday by a suicide bomber in western Anbar province's capital of Ramadi late Tuesday, one of his men said. Mohammed Khamis Abu Risha was touring a checkpoint manned by his fighters in Ramadi when a suicide bomber hugged him, said one of his men who witnessed the attack. Abu Risha was the commander of hundreds of men in the desert province's capital, where security forces and a smaller number of pro-government Sunni tribal fighters have for months been battling tribesmen furious at Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki and militants hailing from the al Qaeda spinter group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/oUB4wGdsC8Q/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com- published: 03 Jun 2014
