A delicate balance: Australian relations with China and Japan
Australia has a fine diplomatic line to tread between China and Japan, with both countries important trading partners to Australia.
The Australian Government gave the impression that our economic ties with Japan are as important as those with China during Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe's visit, but when it comes to the potential for trade growth, the gap between Japan and China is widening fast in China's favour.
