#BBCtrending: Colombian fury at miniskirt rape remarks A Colombian nightclub owner has suggested a woman allegedly raped outside his club may have invited the attack by wearing a miniskirt. Andres Jaramillo has since apologised for his remarks, but not before women's rights groups took to social media to vent their fury. They asked supporters to post pictures of themselves in miniskirts under the umbrella hashtag #Yomepongounaminifaldayque - I wear a miniskirt - so what? BBC Bogota correspondent Arturo Wallace told #BBCtrending's Anne-Marie Tomchak about the huge response, and what it says about Colombia's ongoing struggle against sexual violence. Is this the end of Iraq? For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWORLDNEWS10 raq is facing its most severe crisis in years, with the country on the brink of break-up amid lightning offensives by Sunni Muslim militants. How has it happened so quickly? Iraq's plagued by violence, so what's new? The US-led invasion in 2003 unleashed a bloody insurgency led by Iraq's Sunni Arabs, who controlled the country under Saddam Hussein. Attacks on officials and civilians triggered large-scale reprisals by members of the Shia Arab majority. Although still below the peak of 2006, sectarian violence has been on the rise since US troops withdrew in late 2011. Current events kicked off in December when Sunni militants seeking to create an Islamic state in Iraq and Syria seized the central city of Falluja. Backed by local tribesmen, the militants exploited widespread anger among Sunni Arabs, who accuse Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, a Shia, of discriminating against them and monopolising power. Six months later, the militants launched an assault on Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, to the north. Thirty-thousand soldiers dropped their weapons and fled when confronted by an estimated 800 gunmen. Emboldened, the militants advanced southwards, towards the capital. The assaults on Iraq's towns and cities have been led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (known as ISIS). Five years ago the US said the al-Qaeda breakaway was "on the verge of a strategic defeat". Today, it carries out almost daily bombings in Baghdad and controls territories stretching for hundreds of miles through western and northern Iraq and into Syria, where it aspires to form a state. However the brutal tactics of ISIS's fighters and the extreme interpretation of Islamic law they have imposed on areas under their control have so alienated rebel groups in Syria that they have joined forces to expel them. ISIS has even proved too much for al-Qaeda's central leadership, which disavowed the group in February. Despite the backlash, ISIS grows ever stronger. Although ISIS numbers only an estimated few thousand fighters, they are hugely bolstered in Iraq by support from Sunni tribesmen and former soldiers from the Iraqi army, which was controversially dissolved by the US after the overthrow of Saddam. Colombia - Timelapse
Colombia - 2012
On my second holiday to this stunning country I decided to do the fatal thing and take my camera along with me. I thought about shooting a timelapse shot or two… I ended up filming on average 2 shots per day over the course of 4 weeks and it really became a working holiday!
I was a little nervous to begin with. I had been there before, but didn’t take my DSLR along with me. Now Colombia is vastly safer than it was 20-30 years ago – however its still a little risky if you don’t know where to go. Also, the very nature of timelapse means your stuck in one place for an hour or two and it could be a nice target for opportunists! Luckily I had my father in law and new camera assistant Moises - He even took a small baseball bat along with him on an evening in Bogota! In the end we weren’t troubled at all and I’m so glad I managed to capture so many great images.
Quite a bit of this film was shot in Bogota, and in the Quindio region, including Armenia. We also travelled to Melgar, Manizales and Pereira.
I was limited in what I could take kit wise due to travelling with a baby. So I took a very lightweight tripod, a Canon7D and my trusty 17-55mm f2.8 lens. Had a few problems with camera shake in post, but actually the small tripod held up OK!
This time round I shot a fair amount of HDR timelapse – and had days of processing with Photomatix. On balance I think it was really worth it. So many of the scenes had extreme exposure contrast and I really wanted to preserve detail in the sky and in the landscape itself. It was cut using FCP, and graded with Magic Bullet Looks. All of the tilt shift effects are done in post using Magic Bullet.
Please do go ahead and visit this country if you get the chance!

Colombia
Spent a couple weeks in Colombia with my girlfriend and decided to compile some clips I took into a short travel video. I never really set out to make these things, but I always get back with nowhere near enough clips to make something longer, but just enough to make a little short. Maybe the next time I'm on an airplane, I'll put more time into making these.
Hope this fuels your wanderlust and/or gets you excited to visit Colombia soon.

4/3/14 - Texas Banking Memo, China, Colombia, Vietnam, BitPay & PayStand
http://www.moneyandtech.com/apr3-news-update/ Here is your summary of today's top news stories in Money & Tech: The Texas Department of Banking released a Supervisory Memorandum outlining its policies on virtual currencies, in terms of the Texas Money Services Act. Saying that: "The Exchange of one cryptocurrency for another cryptocurrency is not money transmission." And that "Because cryptocurrency is not money or monetary value, the receipt of it in exchange for a promise to make it available at a later time or different location is not money transmission. This includes intermediaries who receive cryptocurrency for transfer to a third party, and entities who, akin to depositories, hold cryptocurrency on behalf of customers." Check out http://www.moneyandtech.com/ for our interview with Patrick Murck, General Counsel of the Bitcoin Foundation for his interpretation of the news out of Texas. Most of the major bitcoin exchanges in China have begun suspending payment services in response to the central bank's directive. BTC China announced Wednesday that it has suspended dealings with its payment provider Yijingdong. Huobi, OKCoin and FXBTC have likewise received notices from their financial partners and are halting customer deposits. And as we reported Wednesday, BTC38 will be suspending all bank transfers and fiat-to-crypto trading. But they aren't giving up yet. Bloomberg today quoted OKCoin saying, "We have prepared an emergency plan ahead of the April 15 deadline and will launch an overseas version soon. Please don't doubt us." BitPay reported Wednesday that they have opened yet another office in Amsterdam, and are adding another board member as well. Given how quickly they are growing, it's no surprise that they've also reportedly initiated another funding raise, this time aiming for $20 to $30 million. Watch our recent interview with BitPay CEO Tony Gallippi to learn more about their payment services and plans for growth. Swedish bitcoin exchange Safello is making a strong move to establish itself as Europe's leading bitcoin exchange, offering instant, direct payments from 86 European banks in 11 countries. The Banco Central de Colombia released their much-anticipated official statement on Tuesday, confirming that bitcoin is not considered a currency or means of legal tender in Colombia. That said, members of the local Colombian digital currency community are still optimistic, viewing this statement as a first step in relations with regulators. Online payment service PayStand has opened up from its private beta to offer payment processing in bitcoin, e-checks and credit cards to more online merchants for a monthly fee. VBTC, the first online Vietnam Bitcoin Digital Currency exchange, has been condemned as illegal by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which claims that Bitcoin is not a commodity or a service in current Vietnamese legal documents. Bitcoin Vietnam and Bit2C, the companies behind the exchange, counter that Bitcoin was never banned in Vietnam. Yet despite the nebulous regulatory landscape, bitcoin adoption has continued to grow among businesses and individuals in Vietnam, which will hopefully force more clarity on the subject soon. 18 of Europe's top kickboxers will go head-to-head this Saturday in the first Bitcoin Fight Night, competing in London's iconic O2 venue for a prize of 5,000 pounds in bitcoin. Among the matchups will be a celebrity bout with broadcaster and bitcoin enthusiast Max Keiser. And before the fights commence, the venue will host a free bitcoin meetup, featuring a panel debate titled 'How Bitcoin Can Fight Back Against the Hackers'. Following a successful CoinSummit, we got to sit down with organizer Pamir Gelenbe one more time to recap and reflect on the event. Find that interview, and a list of all of our CoinSummit coverage, on our website soon. Shocking Moment Hitman Shoots Edison Cortes In Colombian Bar And Kills Brother Who Stop Fleeing
Shocking Moment Hitman Walks Into Colombian Bar, Shoots Man And Kills Brother Who Stop Fleeing For TWO POUNDS Edison Cortes, 27, was blasted at close range while his brother Fredy was gunned down as he chased the hired assassin This is the horrifying moment a hitman gunned down a customer in a packed Colombian bar before shooting the man's brother dead as he tried to stop him fleeing. The assassin walked in, ordered a beer and smoked a cigarette as he calmly identified his target before pulling a gun out of a shoulder bag and firing at him five times, leaving him critically injured. The victim's brother rushed at him to stop him firing a sixth shot but was blasted in the chest and died at the scene. CCTV shows the brother chase after the gunman, staggering back through the door a short time later. The man appears to be exhausted but he soon collapses and it becomes apparent that he has been shot as blood seeps from a wound visible through his white T shirt. The shocking images were broadcast on Colombian TV today as police appealed for information on the mystery assassin. Edison Cortes, 27, remains critically ill in hospital where he is under police guard. His brother, named as 25 year old Fredy Cortes, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting in a suburb of the capital Bogota. He leaves a pregnant wife and a seven year old daughter. Both worked as electrical engineers for a company owned by their father. Their mother Nancy insisted she had no idea why the hitman had targeted her eldest son. Edison had phoned her moments before the attack to say he would drop by to see her after a beer with his brother and two friends. Devastated Nancy, a regular church goer, said: "I don't know why anyone would want to kill Edison. "He was a hard-working boy who wasn't involved in anything he shouldn't have been. "We're terrified now that the assassin will try to murder him in hospital." Thousands of hitmen are allegedly available for hire in Colombia. Two years ago, Spanish newspaper El Pais put the number of assassins in the city of Medellin, home to Pablo Escobar's legendary drugs cartel, at around 5000. It was claimed they were willing to kill for just over TWO POUNDS. Medellin police commander General Yesid Vasquez dismissed the report as rubbish, saying it did not reflect the city's current reality. He claimed the real number of hitmen in the city was closer to 500.- published: 07 Feb 2014
