(Reuters) - A passenger ferry carrying about 470 people was listing badly off South Korea's southwest coast and had sent a distress signal, a Korean coast guard official said on Wednesday, and a rescue mission was underway. Korean television news reports said the ferry was sinking and that many of the passengers on board were students on the way to Jeju island, about 100 km (60 miles) off the coast, on school trips. Those reports could not be confirmed immediately by the coast guard. The coast guard official, speaking from Mokpo city on the southwest coast, said a rescue operation had been launched but could provide no further details. YTN television said 100 passengers had already been rescued. The ferry, which also carries cars and trucks, has a capacity of about 900 people. A passenger on board told YTN television a rescue helicopter had reached the vessel. The unidentified passenger, who sounded calm, said those on board were in their cabins but were having trouble keeping their balance. The reason for the ship's difficulties was not immediately clear. Heavy fog had set in overnight in the area, leading to cancellations of many passenger ferry services to islands. However, news reports said visibility in the area was fair. (Guardian) Coastguard vessels and helicopters despatched to rescue passengers - mainly students bound for holiday island South Korea despatched coastguard vessels and helicopters on Wednesday to rescue around 450 passengers -- mostly high school students -- on a ferry sinking off the southern coast, officials said. "The ship is taking in water and sinking," a coastguard spokesman told AFP by phone. "There are around 450 people on board and we have coastguard vessels, commercial ships in the area, as well as helicopters all engaged in the rescue operation," the spokesman said. Earlier reports had put the number of people on board at 350. Most of the passengers were believed to be high school students on a trip to the southern resort island of Jeju. The Yonhap news agency cited rescue agency officials as saying 130 passengers had already been taken off the stricken ferry, which ran into trouble 20 kilometres (13 miles) off the southern coast. "We heard a big thumping sound and the boat stopped," one passenger told the YTN news channel by telephone. "The boat is tilting and we have to hold on to something to stay seated," the passenger said. The reason for the ship's difficulties was not immediately clear. Heavy fog had set in overnight in the area, leading to cancellations of many passenger ferry services to islands. However, news reports said visibility in the area was fair. The exchange of fire into the Yellow Sea followed Pyongyang's sudden announcement that it would conduct live-fire drills in seven areas north of the Koreas' disputed maritime boundary. North Korea routinely test-fires artillery and missiles into the ocean but rarely discloses those plans in advance. The announcement was seen as an expression of Pyongyang's frustration at making little progress in its recent push to win outside aid. North Korea fired 500 rounds of artillery shells over more than three hours, about 100 of which fell south of the sea boundary, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said. South Korea responded by firing 300 shells into North Korean waters, he said. No shells from either side were fired at any land or military installations, but Kim called the North's artillery firing a provocation aimed at testing Seoul's security posture. There was no immediate comment from North Korea. In Washington, White House spokesman Jonathan Lalley called North Korea's actions "dangerous and provocative" and said they would further aggravate tensions in the region. Monday's exchange was relatively mild in the history of animosity and violence between the Koreas, but there is worry in Seoul that an increasingly dissatisfied North Korea could repeat the near-daily barrage of war rhetoric it carried out last spring, when tensions soared as Pyongyang threatened nuclear strikes on Washington and Seoul in response to condemnation of its third nuclear test. Residents on front-line South Korean islands spent several hours in shelters during the firing, and officials temporarily halted ferry service linking the islands to the mainland. Kang Myeong-sung, speaking from a shelter on Yeonpyeong island, which is in sight of North Korean territory, said he didn't hear any fighter jets but heard the boom of artillery fire. BREAKING NEWS - North and South Korea exchange fire across maritime border
BREAKING NEWS - North and South Korea exchange fire across maritime border
The two Koreas traded live fire into the sea across their disputed maritime border on Monday, after Seoul said a North Korean military exercise dropped shells into South Korean waters. "Some of the shells fired by North Korea dropped in our area and our side responded with fire," a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) told AFP. There was no indication that either side was firing at any particular target. Officials on the South Korean border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong said residents were being evacuated to shelters as a precaution. The North Korean live fire exercise began at 12:15 pm (0315 GMT) and the South began responding with its own volley of artillery shells within 30 minutes. "For the moment, both sides are firing into the sea," the JCS spokesman said. North Korea regularly conducts live-fire drills but, in an unusual move, it had notified the South of Monday's exercise in advance. The JCS had immediately warned it would respond in the event of any shells falling on its side of the border. The Yellow Sea boundary is an extremely sensitive region that has been the scene of brief but bloody clashes in the past. In November 2010, North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong island, killing four people and triggering concerns of a full-scale conflict. "The aim is to threaten us and rack up tension on the Yellow Sea border and the overall Korean peninsula," South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Wi Yong-Seop told reporters before the North Korean drill began. "The fact that they sent a message to us indicates their hostile intention," Wi said. -- 'New form' of nuclear test -- The exchange of fire came a day after North Korea threatened to carry out a "new form" of nuclear test -- seen as a possible reference to efforts to build a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a ballistic missile. Pyongyang has carried out a series of rocket and short-range missile launches in recent weeks, in a pointed protest at ongoing annual South Korea-US military exercises. On Wednesday it upped the ante by test-firing two mid-range ballistic missiles capable of striking Japan. It was the first medium-range missile launch since 2009 and coincided with a trilateral summit attended by the South, the United States and Japan that focused on presenting a united front to the dangers posed by Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. UN resolutions prohibit the North from firing any ballistic missiles and the UN Security Council said it would consider taking "appropriate" action -- a response that triggered the North's "new" nuclear test threat. North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests, the most recent -- and most powerful -- in February last year. Most experts believe it is still some way from mastering the technology required to build a miniaturised warhead -- a development that would be seen as a game-changer in assessing the North's nuclear arms capabilities. The de-facto maritime boundary between the two Koreas -- the Northern Limit Line -- is not recognised by Pyongyang, which argues it was unilaterally drawn by US-led United Nations forces after the 1950-53 Korean War. As its military and economy have grown, so too have China's dreams of dominating an island chain centered on Taiwan and including Japan's Senkakus. China's increased belligerence in the region is part of its plan to control the Yellow Sea, the South China Sea and the larger East China Sea. Its military doctrine refers to dominance over the "first island chain," which encompasses the East China Sea. The next step is dominance over what Beijing calls the second island chain extending from Japan to Indonesia. Some analysts have even speculated about plans for a third island chain strategy extending as far as Hawaii. China military will take "defensive emergency measures" if aircraft enter the area without reporting flight plans or identifying themselves. China's defense ministry warned in a statement that all aircraft that fail to comply with its new rules for transit through the zone could be shot down. Media reports say that the ministry issued a map showing the new East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, including what the Chinese call the Diaoyu Islands. The map of the new defense zone, pulled off a Chinese website, shows that it overlaps Japan's defense zone over the Senkakus, a group of uninhabited islands located south of Okinawa and north of Taiwan that sit atop significant oil deposits. Tensions escalated in February when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe denounced what he said was China's use of fire-control radar in January twice on Japanese targets in the East China Sea. Japan's Defense Ministry said that it sent jets up 306 times in the 12 months ended in March 2013 and 149 times in the April-September period in response to Chinese incursions. The U.S. is obligated to defend the islands under the 1960 U.S.- Japan Security Treaty, which covers all territories under Japanese administration, including the Senkakus http://news.investors.com/112513-680586-beijing-east-china-sea-maritime-grab.htm?ven=fox_businesscp&src;=aurlaeu- published: 08 Dec 2013

Hyosarang Hospital, the hospital where the fire broke out, specializes in care for the elderly, helping those with dementia, palsy, and other chronic diseases. Reportedly, at least six other people were injured in the incident and are currently hospitalized and in critical condition. There were 35 employees and patients on the second floor of the hospice where the fire broke out just a little after midnight; the 45 people on the first floor all managed to escape without injury. Officials with the Jangseong Fire Department were unable to immediately specify what caused the fire. The blaze was put out after about six minutes, but authorities stated that those who died suffocated on poisonous gases given off by the flames. Most of the victims who died were in their 70s and 80s and therefore confined to their beds, reports stated. This is only one in a series of disasters which have left South Korea reeling. The most well-known is the ferry disaster in which a ferry sunk off the coast last month leaving over 300 people dead. The search for dozens of victims from the ferry sinking is still underway. A subway crash earlier this month in the South Korean capital of Seoul resulted in dozens of people injured. Wednesday's incident is the second deadly blaze to strike the nation. On Tuesday, seven died and 20 were injured in a fire at a bus terminal in Goyang city. The recent disasters have caused a global focus to hone in on recent safety lapses in South Korea and President Park Geun Hye has made promises to overhaul public safety mechanisms in the country in hopes that future incidents such as these can be prevente TAGS abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines- published: 28 May 2014

Among the passengers, around 320 were students who were traveling with several teachers to the resort island of Jeju. In total there were 447 passengers and 27 crew on the ferry, a total of 474 people. The Coast Guard has confirmed that there is at least one death as a female body was recovered around 1135 AM (local time). The distress signal was received from the ferry, identified as the Sewol, around 9 AM (local time). The South Korean Ministry of Security and Public Administration has confirmed that 179 passengers have been rescued. YTN and other local media have reported that all students aboard the ship have been saved, but remains unconfirmed by the Coast Guard. One parent told the network that her child was safe, and was with 11 others. All of them jumped into water and were rescued by a ship. Of the 11, one suffered a fractured leg, but the remainder were reportedly uninjured. One student, resting at the Jindo Indoor Auditorium with other rescued passengers, told YTN that he heard a loud bump, which was quickly followed by the ship beginning to sink. He jumped into the sea before swimming to a rescue vessel. "I had to swim a bit to get to the boat to be rescued," student Lim Hyung Min told the network. "The water was so cold and I wanted to live. I think most of the students are now rescued. I have 20 other students with me and many of us suffered from hypothermia but now we are OK because we got blankets." The ship listed badly, leading to authorities ordering all remaining on the stricken ship to jump into the sea, YTN has reported. The ferry is now almost completely submerged. The water is 12.6 degrees centigrade (55 degrees Fahrenheit). Humans can survive for around two hours at this temperature. The students were in touch with their parents by telephone. President Park has ordered all available vessels, along with special operations divers, to contribute to the rescue effort, semi-official news agency Yonhap has reported. Do You Know South Korea?
From Daejeon to Seoraksan to Busan to Seoul. Our S.Korea road trip last October (2010).
I'm happy to see that so many people in South Korea have shared this video. I really wanted to show South Korea's beauty to people that are not familiar with it, but it's great others back in S.K. find it to be a heartfelt look into their country.
My parents live in Daejeon. You can checkout my dad's photography of Korea here:

For more S. Korea, this is a video of my mom's painting group on a mountain near Daejeon:

What caused South Korea ferry disaster? BBC News
We examine what could have been behind the disaster, and what went wrong. The evacuation has already been criticised. Passengers were initially instructed to remain in the cabins, and only two life boats were launched. North, South Korea Trade Artillery Fire Across Maritime Border | BREAKING NEWS - 31 MARCH 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS North and South Korea have exchanged fire across the disputed western maritime border, South Korea has said. North Korea announced early on Monday that it would hold live-fire drills in seven parts of the border area. South Korea says it returned fire after North Korean shells landed in its territorial waters. The area has been a flashpoint between the two Koreas. In late 2010, four South Koreans were killed on a border island by North Korean artillery fire. Earlier that year, a South Korean warship sank near the disputed border with the loss of 46 lives. Seoul says Pyongyang torpedoed the vessel but North Korea denies any role in the incident. The UN drew the western border after the Korean War, but North Korea has never recognised it. Missile tests The live-fire exercises were announced by North Korea in a faxed message from its military to the South's navy. The exercises would take place in seven border areas, the message said. South Korean had warned of immediate retaliation if any ordinance crossed the border. In November 2010, North Korea fired shells at the border island of Yeonpyeong, killing two marines and two civilians. It said it was responded to South Korean military exercises in the area. The latest incident comes days after North Korea test-fired two medium-range Nodong missiles over the sea, its first such launch since 2009. Late last week, the UN Security Council condemned the launch and said it was considering an "appropriate response". That launch followed a series of short-range missile tests, seen as a response to the current US-South Korea annual military exercises. Over the weekend, North Korea also threatened to conduct a "new form" of nuclear test.
