Scheduled and coordinated by the U.S. Navy Third Fleet, RIMPAC also offers Canada the senior members of the Canadian Forces the opportunity to assume positions of leadership, further enhancing Canada's ability to work with other nations of the Asia-Pacific region. RIMPAC 2012 involves forces from Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) is the world's largest international maritime exercise, designed to prepare military forces to work together in missions ranging from providing humanitarian aide to full combat operations. RIMPAC began as an annual exercise in 1971 and since 1974 has been scheduled every other year. The endurance of exercise demonstrates the value of bringing international forces together to train and improve their ability to operate in a joint and combined multi-national force environment. Canada, along with only Australia and the United States, has participated in RIMPAC since its inception.

A 'Historic Moment': China's Naval Ships Head to RIMPAC 2014

Four Chinese naval ships set sail on Monday, on their way to take part in the Hawaii-based RIMPAC international maritime exercise. This year's RIMPAC will feature participants from 23 nations, with China joining for the very first time. According to Chinese media reports, China will be represented at RIMPAC by the Haikou (a missile destroyer), the Yueyang (a missile frigate), the Qiandaohu (a supply ship), and the Peace Ark (a hospital ship). 1,100 Chinese officers and soldiers will take part in the drill, including a diving squad and a commando unit.

RIMPAC 2012 Portaaviones Chile USS Nimitz (CVN-68) En Hawaii: Ministro Allamand y comandante en jefe de la Armada de chile participan en ejercicio Rimpac 2012 Este fin de semana se inició la visita del ministro de Defensa, Andrés Allamand y del comandante en jefe de la Armada, almirante Edmundo González a Hawaii, Estados Unidos, para participar en el ejercicio internacional -considerado el más grande del mundo-, Rim to the Pacific (Rimpac), el que por primera vez tiene como comandante de un "Grupo de Tarea" a un oficial chileno. El Centro de Operaciones del ejercicio Rimpac 2012, opera en el Pacific Warfighting Center (PWC). Este año participan 42 buques, 6 submarinos, 200 aeronaves y más de 25 mil hombres de 22 países y hacen su debut las marinas de: India, México, Nueva Zelanda, Noruega, Filipinas, Rusia y Tonga. Homenaje en el "USS Arizona Memorial" En la tarde del viernes, Allamand junto al almirante González, encabezaron el homenaje en el USS Arizona Memorial, que recuerda y marca el lugar donde murieron 1.102 de los 1.177 marinos que estaban a bordo del USS Arizona, durante la mañana del 7 de diciembre de 1941 cuando fue atacado Pearl Harbor. Este sábado, las autoridades chilenas, visitaron el portaaviones "USS Nimitz", que opera como puesto de comando de Rimpac 2012. A bordo del "Nimitz" se encuentra, ejerciendo como Comandante del Grupo de Tarea (CGT), el capitán de navío Luis Sánchez, quien tiene a cargo cuatro Unidades de Tarea (TU) compuestas por 18 buques de Estados Unidos, Corea del Sur, Canadá, Singapur, Japón, Rusia, Australia y Francia. Ejercicio Internacional Rimpac Rim to the Pacific (RIMPAC), viene desarrollándose desde 1971 cada dos años frente a las costas de Hawaii y congrega a las principales marinas del mundo, lideradas por Estados Unidos. Chile participa, en forma ininterrumpida, desde 1996.

Chinese Ships Attend US-Led Navy Exercise - RIMPAC Naval Drill

Chinese ships set sail for RIMPAC naval drill (CCTV) Four vessels from the People's Liberation Army Navy have set sail for the U.S. led RIMPAC on Monday. Three vessels started their journey from the PLA South Sea Fleet in Sanya, and the forth one began from eastern China's Zhoushan port. This year's Rim of the Pacific exercise will involve 23 nations, 47 ships, more than 200 aircraft and some 25,000 troops. The naval exercises will be held between June 26 and August 1. This could be a historic moment for the PLA Navy. The farewell ceremony marks the journey to the world's largest naval games at the Pacific Ocean. "This is a major event for U.S.-China military exchanges, and a good chance for us to conduct good relationship with other navies in the region. It will also help upgrade PLA naval capabilities," said Xu Hongmeng, Deputy Commander of PLA Navy. Prior to the departure, these sailors and officers - numbering over a thousand - who will take part in the exercise, have vowed to put their best foot forward in operations and use this unique experience to establish a good image on the world stage. For the PLA Navy, RIMPAC 2014 opens a window for the world to know more about China's naval strength and thinking. For the U.S. navy, the exercise provides a chance to show its intentions to further engage with China. RIMPAC has both symbolic and practical significance for both sides in forging the new type of big power relationship. The four Chinese ships taking part in RIMPAC represent some of the best qualities of the PLA Navy. These ships will be the second largest operational group taking part in this year's exercise. Along with other navies, they will conduct disaster relief and maritime security operations, as well as complex maritime manoeuvres.

U.S. Marines from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Marine Corps Base Hawaii conduct an amphibious assault training mission as part of Rim of the Pacific 2012. Republic of Korea (ROK) Marines and soldiers from the New Zealand army also participated in the mission. The force arrived by CH-53 helicopter insertion from the USS Essex aircraft carrier.
