Västerbotten County (Västerbottens län) is a county or län in the north of Sweden. It borders the counties of Västernorrland, Jämtland, and Norrbotten, as well as the Norwegian county of Nordland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

Västerbotten County covers the province of Västerbotten and parts of the provinces Lapland and Ångermanland.

The main aim of the County Administrative Board is to fulfil the goals set in national politics by the Parliament and the Government, to coordinate the interests of the county, to promote the development of the county, to establish regional goals and safeguard the due process of law in the handling of each case. The arms for Västerbotten County is a combination of the arms of Västerbotten, Swedish Lapland and Ångermanland. When it is shown with a royal crown it represents the County Administrative Board. Up until the Finnish War 1808-1809 and the Treaty of Fredrikshamn the province of Västerbotten also included a small part of today's Finland. This part has later been integrated in Lapland, Finland. The Eastern Botten or Ostrobothnia was in the Finnish side.

Gustav Torgny Lindgren (born 16 June 1938 in Raggsjö, Norsjö, Västerbotten County) is a Swedish writer.

Lindgren is the son of Andreas Lindgren and Helga Björk. He studied in Umeå to become a teacher and worked as a teacher until the middle of the 1970s. He was for several years active as a local politician for the Swedish Social Democratic Party. In the 1980s he converted to the Catholic faith.

Lindgren began as a poet in 1965 but had to wait until 1982 for his breakthrough, with The Way of a Serpent (Swedish: Ormens väg på hälleberget). Lindgren has been translated into more than thirty languages and is one of Sweden's most internationally successful contemporary writers. He became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1991.

The way of a Serpent tells the story of a farmer family in a poverty-stricken region in the northern parts of Sweden in the nineteenth century. The family formerly owned its land, but had to sell it cheap during a succession of years of famine. The new owner collects his rent as long as there is money in the household, and exploits the women when there is no money.

Sara Lidman (December 30, 1923 - June 17, 2004) was a Swedish writer.

Born in the village Missenträsk in the northern parts of Skellefteå Municipality, Lidman was raised in the Västerbotten region of northern Sweden. She studied at the University of Uppsala where her studies were interrupted by her receiving tuberculosis. She achieved her first great success with the novel Tjärdalen (The Tar Still). In this novel and in Hjortronlandet she depicts themes like alienation and loneliness. In this and her following three novels, she described the difficult conditions for poor farmers in the northern Swedish province Västerbotten during the nineteenth century.

Her innovative style was influenced by dialects and biblical language.

In connection with her first four novels, she wrote a number of texts with strong political content. She engaged in protest against the Vietnam War (including traveling to North Vietnam and participating in the Russell Tribunal) and apartheid in South Africa. She also supported the miners strikes in North Sweden and was active in the Communist movement and after that in the environmentalist movement. After 1977, she wrote five additional novels that dealt with the colonization of northern Sweden.

Ulf Carlsson is a male former table tennis player from Sweden. From 1980 to 1988 he won several medals in singles, doubles, and team events in the Table Tennis European Championships, and in the World Table Tennis Championships.
