Baku (Azerbaijani: Bakı, IPA: [bɑˈcɯ]) is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. Baku is located 28 meters below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world. Baku is also the largest city in the world located below sea level. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, which projects into the Caspian Sea. The city consists of two principal parts: the downtown area and the old Inner City (21.5 ha). At the beginning of 2009, Baku's urban population was estimated at just over two million people.[3] Officially, about 25 percent of all inhabitants of the country live in Baku's metropolitan area. Baku is divided into eleven administrative districts (raions) and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on islands in the Baku Bay and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 km (37 mi) away from Baku. The Inner City of Baku along with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. According to the Lonely Planet's ranking, Baku is also among the world's top ten destinations for urban nightlife.[4] The city is the scientific, cultural and industrial center of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there, including SOCAR, one of the world's top 100 companies and others.[5] The Baku International Sea Trade Port, sheltered by the islands of the Baku Archipelago to the east and the Absheron Peninsula to the north, is capable of handling two million tons of general and dry bulk cargoes per year.[6] Baku hosted the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and will host the 2015 European Games. Bakı, Бакы, МФА (азерб.): [bɑˈcɯ]) — столица Азербайджанской Республики, крупнейший промышленный, экономический, и научно-технический центр Закавказья, а также крупнейший порт на Каспийском море и самый большой город на Кавказе[7][8]. Площадь Бакинской агломерации составляет 2130 км²[1]. Баку расположен на южном берегу Апшеронского полуострова. Город по своей древности, величине территории и численности населения является одним из старинных и крупнейших городов Востока. С населением Апшеронского полуострова население агломерации составляет 2 545,6 тыс. жителей[5]. Баку удостоен в 2010 году Программой ООН по окружающей среде (UNEP) звания одного из главных городов по проведению Всемирного дня окружающей среды. Подобные города в Европе избираются ежегодно. The competition claims to be an apolitical celebration of European unity, but when the President of Azerbaijan declared the victory a national achievement he offered the nation up to the harsh glare of the international spotlight - for better or worse. The Republic of Azerbaijan is situated in the South Caucasus, bordering the Russian Federation to the north, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey to the west, Iran to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the east. Its capital is Baku. Covering a total of 86,600 square kilometres, Azerbaijan is a mountainous country with almost half its territory comprising the wooded mountains of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus. Its population was estimated at 8.2 million in July 2009.
The national day of Azerbaijan is Independence Day, celebrated on 28 May. It celebrates the founding of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan in 1918.
