March For Puttinu - 3 January 2014
C (SD) Company is an elite company made of 110 soldiers who are all volunteers to participate in EU LED Crisis Management Operations, most of whom have already deployed in support of KOSOVO AID; EU NAVFOR; EUTM SOMALIA; EUMM GEORGIA; and several FRONTEX deployments. This company is made up of highly trained and fit young soldiers, who out of their own initiative, came up with the idea to organise a charity event in aid of Puttinu Cares. At the beginning the event was to take shape in the form of a fun run however these motivated soldiers kept coming up with more ideas and eventually the event was dubbed as March For Puttinu. All C (SD) Coy soldiers pledged to participate in the event. The event kicked of on the 11th of December when all Coy soldier presented themselves at the blood transfusion centre to donate blood. Such a large number of donors kept the nurses and staff busy. With this injection of donated blood Mater Dei Hospital was temporarily alleviated of blood shortage. Meanwhile the soldiers kept training for this event which will be conducted irrespective of weather conditions. The soldiers will March along a 15km route in full uniform carrying 20 kg of weight in their back pack. The route is as shown below and funds will be raised along the route with the assistance of volunteers provided by Puttinu Care Foundation. Once at Msida Creek (near Black Pearl) the soldiers will dare the cold winter waters and swim across to Maritime Squadron base (Haywharf) fully clothed. After the swim they will pick up their back packs once again and continue their March up to City Gates Valletta. At City Gates the soldiers will be awaited by young children who are currently benefiting from assistance provided by Puttinu Care Foundation. The soldiers together with these young real life heroes will march up to St Georges Square. Once at St Georges Square all the soldiers together with the young warriors will once again do their utmost to collect more funds. Event will kick off at 0830hrs from St Georges Bay St Julian and the soldiers are expected to be at Msida Creek for the swimming event round 1100hrs. It is being envisaged that the soldiers will meet the children near city gates at around 1400hrs. An SMS hot line has been initiated and everyone is urged to participate in this noble cause. Each donation is worth ONLY 2 € making this affordable to all. The public is invited to meet and cheer these soldiers anywhere along the route. Your support will be greatly appreciated by all the soldiers especially while daring the cold waters at Msida Creek. C (SD) COY soldiers are doing their utmost to put a smile on the faces of these children. While everyone will be busy shopping around or enjoying the holidays these soldiers will be marching and swimming to help those in need. The Battle of Prilep
The Battle of Prilep
The Battle of Prilep or Battle of Pirlepe in the First Balkan War took place on November 3, 1912. The Serbian army encountered Ottoman troops near the town of Prilep, in today's Republic of Macedonia. The clash lasted for three days, and the Ottoman army was overwhelmed and forced to retreat. Bad weather and difficult roads hampered the 1st Army's pursuit of the Ottomans after the battle of Kumanovo, forcing the Morava Division to move ahead of the Drina Division. On 3 November, in the autumn rain, forward elements of the Morava Division encountered fire from Kara Said Pasha's 5th Corps from positions north of Prilep. This started the three-day battle for Prilep, which was broken off that night and was renewed the next morning. When the Drina Division arrived on the battlefield, the Serbs gained an overwhelming advantage, forcing the Ottomans to withdraw south of the city. On 5 November, as the Serbs moved south of Prilep they came again under Ottoman fire from prepared positions on the heights of the road to Bitola. Bayonets and hand grenades gave the Serbs the advantage in hand-to-hand fighting, but they still required the better part of the day to force the Ottomans to retreat. The overt and guileless nature of the Serbian infantry attacks impressed one Ottoman observer, who noted: "The development of the Serbian infantry attack was as open and clear as the execution of a barracks exercise. Large and strong units covered the entire plain. All the Serbian officers were seen clearly. They attacked as if on parade. The picture was very impressive. One part of the Turkish officers were struck dumb by the wonder of this mathematical disposition and order, the other sighed at this moment because of the absence of heavy artillery. They remarked on the arrogance of the open approach and clear frontal attack." The artillery abandoned in Skoplje would have helped the Ottoman defenders south of Prilep. The Serbs demonstrated the same lack of subtlety in their infantry attacks that caused heavy casualties among all the combatants during the Balkan Wars and would cause many during the First World War. During this battle, the Serbian 1st Army was without the presence of its commanding general, Crown Prince Alexander. Ill from the rigors of the cold and wet campaign, he maintained telephone contact with his army from his sickbed in Skoplje. The short, sharp battles around Prilep demonstrated that the Ottomans were still capable of opposing the Serbian march through Macedonia. Even after abandoning the city of Prilep, the Ottoman 5th Corps fought stubbornly south of town. The size and enthusiasm of the Serbs overcame the Ottomans, but at a cost. The Ottomans suffered around 300 dead and 900 wounded, and 152 were taken prisoner; the Serbs had losses of around 2,000 dead and wounded.
