Inflation target 5%, don't want rupee back at 45 level: RBI Governor to NDTV
In an exclusive interview to Prannoy Roy, Dr Raghuram Rajan says that RBI aims to bring down inflation to a level at which an ordinary person doesn't have to worry about every day. He said while RBI cannot control onion prices, some tough measures are needed to tackle inflation as it has spreads beyond food to services like healthcare, education and housing. Raghuram Rajan also told NDTV that he is not uncomfortable with current levels of 61-62 of the rupee, but insisted that he doesn't want the rupee to go back to 45 to the dollar levels. His message for the industry is to bear with central bank's decision to raise rates till inflation cools down. RBI Governor announces Monetary Policy
RBI Governor, Raghuran Rajan announces Monetary Policy. The RBI has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to anchor inflation and inflationary expectations. In his first monetary policy review after taking over as the RBI governor, Raghuram Rajan increased repo rate to 7.5 percent from 7.25 percent with immediate effect, while the reverse repo rate stands adjusted at 6.5 per cent. However, the Marginal Standing Facility rates was reduced by 75 basis points to 9.5 percent. The measure was taken to tighten liquidity and arrest volatility in the foreign exchange market. RBI also reduced the minimum daily maintenance of the Cash Reserve Ratio from 99 percent of the requirement to 95 percent, effective from the fortnight beginning September 21, while keeping the CRR unchanged at 4 percent. In its last policy review in July, weak rupee led the RBI to keep all key interest rates unchanged.- published: 20 Sep 2013
