U.S. "Floating University'' Arrives In Cuba
U.S. "Floating University'' Arrives In Cuba
A cruise ship carrying 648 mainly U.S. students arrived in Havana on Monday (December 9) for a two day stay as part of an educational program called Semester at Sea. Nine years have passed since the last time the cruise and programme, sponsored by the University of Virginia in the United States, visited the island. The visit comes after Cuba temporarily reopened consular services in the United States after its bank postponed closing the accounts of its diplomatic missions in Washington and New York, it said in a statement released to media on Monday. Consular services were suspended on November 27 by the Cuban Interests Section, Havana's mission in Washington, when it failed to find a replacement for M&T; Bank Corp, which had decided to stop offering services to foreign diplomatic missions. The United States and Cuba do not have diplomatic relations but maintain lower level Interests Sections in each other's capitals. The cruise also includes students from Cuba, Mexico and Canada. A neuroscience student from the University of Chicago, Lorae Schafer, said she was excited about the visit. "I'm really excited to be in Cuba. I never thought in my life that I would be able to be here. This is such an honour, thank you so much for having us. It's great." A Cuban student who took part in the cruise, Marisol Botanes, said she cleared up misconceptions the U.S. students had about Cuba. "They come with an idea of Cuba, contrary to what it really is like. They asked incredible things for us but they thought they were true such as, if Cubans were not allowed to walk into hotels in Cuba, with CUC (Cuba's convertible peso) and whether CUC (Cuba's convertible peso) were just for tourists and not for Cubans. They had concerns like these, if there was really a regime in Cuba. I had the modest mission of explaining the truth." A sociology student from New York, Bridget Dugan, said some of her family was concerned about her visiting the island. "My grandparents were very hesitant for me to come to Cuba because they remember that time when American and Cuba were very separate. My parents were very supportive of me coming and were very excited. My friend came to Cuba last year for a month to study and she said it was the greatest experience she's ever had so I'm very excited to follow in her footsteps." The purpose of the visit is for students to learn about the country's history and scientific development while socialising with Cuban university students. Semester at Sea students will visit several universities in different provinces of Cuba during their stay. While the Cuban government does not publish statistics on the number of Cuban-Americans visiting the country each year, tourism industry sources and U.S. charter companies and travel agencies place the figure at about 350,000, all of whom must seek entry visas.- published: 10 Dec 2013
