Did you know that North Atlantic Right Whales don't have teeth? They are baleen whales, which means they have comb-like plates in their mouths that filter food from the water. Their foods of choice are zooplankton called copepods. They eat between 2 and 5 thousand pounds a day to support their 55 ton weight. That's as heavy as 10 elephants! Although international protections banning whaling went into effect in 1935, North Atlantic right whales are still one of the most endangered species in the world. With fewer than 500 left, they are now the "right" whales to save. A healthy ocean depends on North Atlantic Right Whales. And endangered whales need our help. Situated in Norway, the Atlantic Road (in Norwegian called Atlanterhavsveien) is a part of Norwegian national road 64 (Rv 64). It is close to the cities of Molde and Kristiansund in the midwest part of the Norwegian coastline. This fantastic and spectacular road is a very popular tourist attraction. Both the local population and tourist visitors frequently use the road to go fishing for cod and other fish directly from the bridges. One of the bridges is special designed for fishing. The 8.3 km (5 mile) road, with 8 bridges of a total length of 891 metres, is built on several small islands and skerries, and is spanned by eight bridges and several landfills. This road has an open sea view which is not so common for roads along the Norwegian coast. Here the distance between the islands was so small that a road could be built across the archipelago. In addition there are fjords and mountains inside the road. The Atlantic Road zigzags across low bridges that jut out over the sea, linking the islands between Molde (famous for its annual jazz festival in July) and Kristiansund in the western fjords. The Hustadvika is an infamous stretch of ocean and when in storm it is truly dramatic. In calmer weather you might spot whales and seals, writes the British newspaper The Guardian (25 April 2006). Chosen as "Norway's construction of the century" in 2005, the road links together small coastal communities. From the town of Kristiansund, the Atlantic Road is only a 30-minute drive through the Atlantic Ocean Tunnel. After passing the tunnel you cross the island of Aver?y with Kvernes Stave Church, the very scenic west side of the island, and the incredible coastline out towards Hustadvika. The Atlantic Road has been awarded the status national tourist route because of the architecture of the road and the bridges, and the incredible coastline it passes through. The Atlantic Road's sharp turns and wild nature have ranked it first on The Guardian's list of the world's best road trips, in sharp competition with world renowned attractions such as Northern Ireland's Antrim coast road and the Himalayas. The construction started 1 August 1983 and was marked by the struggle against the elements. During the six-year duration of the works were recorded up to 12 hurricane category storms. Finally the road was opened on the 7th of July 1989. The first ten years the drivers had to pay toll to drive on it, but since 26th of june 1999 (at 03:00 p.m.) the road has been toll-free. There are four panoramic views- and rest areas with facilities in bold architectural forms along the Atlantic Road. Here you can experience both nature and architecture in great interaction. Some of the viewing platforms are also popular with anglers. The road rides above some rough and uneven surfaces and it's spectacular because it rises itself and falls at many places like a sea at the time of a rough tide. Apart from the incredible road itself, the scenery surrounding it could give any driver shivers. In 1935, the railway plans definitely was set aside. But not until the 70's, the plans where again put into action, this time as a road project, and the 1 August 1983 started the construction work. The dramatic peninsula features Barley Cove beach and is highlighted by the Mizen Head Signal Station Visitor Centre. Be sure to look for seals lazily resting on the rocks below. The best pub in the entire world is located in the small village of Crookhaven. As you walk into O'Sullivan's Bar, the owner, Dermot O'Sullivan, will greet you with a friendly, "Hello boys and girls." What happens if you try to order a Guinness? You don't want to know. Go with the Murphy's; it's local and creamier! Possibly the most beautiful place in all of West Cork is Three Castle Head. The collection of three towers, built in 1207 by the O'Mahoneys, is a short hike from Dunlough Pier. The castles sit on cliffs, which offer views of the Atlantic Ocean, Mizen Head, Sheep's Head and the mountains of County Kerry. At the base of the castles is a lake. Irish legend holds that a lady haunts the lake while protecting the king's valuables that were thrown in to guard them from attackers. Between the villages of Goleen and Durrus, you will find the Coast Road. On this road is the well-preserved O'Mahoney Castle known as Dunmanus Castle. The castle was built in 1430 at the current location of Dunmanus Harbor. Views of the beautiful Irish countryside and Dunmanus Bay will have you reaching for your camera. Further along, near the village of Skibbereen is the area of Lough Hyne. Lough Hyne is a salt-water lake, fed by the tides, and is home to a varied collection of marine life. Above the lake are the walking paths of Knockamagh Wood Nature Reserve. The paths of the nature preserve lead you to commanding views of Roaringwater Bay, Baltimore harbor and Clear and Sherkin Islands. Up the coast, near the County Kerry border, is the fishing village of Castletownbere. The village is situated on the southern edge of the Beara Peninsula and is near the beginning of the southern portion of the Ring of Beara. Just out of town are the ruins of Dunboy Castle, which was destroyed by the English in 1602 after a 14-day siege. Leaving the West Cork area, head up to Bantry Bay, through Glengarriff and Kenmare up to the pride of County Kerry, Killarney. The town of Killarney is filled with a nice mix of nature and history. A visit to the Muckross area; including the house, abbey and gardens is very enjoyable. You can easily spend a full day taking in this incredible area. So, what is the best part of it all? You only have to park once as all these sites are within walking distance of each other. If you are heading back to Dublin, a stop in Cashel is very enjoyable. The Rock of Cashel is world-famous and awe inspiring. A little known abbey in Cashel is Hore Abbey that sits at the bottom of the hill in the shadows of the Rock of Cashel.
