Spanish Recovery: Reality or Illusion? (Venture Capital E13)
Spain's economy is officially out of recession after more than two years, but with a growth figure of 0.1 percent is it really time to get out the sangria and start flamenco dancing? Unemployment has also improved, but remains at 26 percent -- again, nothing to go get excited about! The number of people out of work fell at the end of 2013 from a year earlier. But more than a quarter of a million people left the workforce during the year, meaning the jobless rate rose slightly. Outside a Madrid job centre one woman lamented: "My brother got a job in December after being unemployed for three years. But 40 percent of work contracts in December were temporary. I'm out of work too. People are definitely not seeing any improvement." Even as many long-term unemployed have given up looking for work, the overall jobless rate rose to 26.03 percent of the workforce. It was up from 25.98 percent in the previous quarter. More than 55 percent of young Spaniards are on the dole. Almost a quarter of all the unemployed in the 28-country European Union live in Spain, while well over half of Spain's jobless are considered long term having been out of work for more than a year. The number of Spanish homes in which all members eligible to work cannot find a job rose in the fourth quarter to 1.8 million. Away from the job centres it is possible to find optimists. Javier Urones, an analyst with X-Trade Brokers in Madrid, said: "We believe we're going through a stabilisation process in the jobless numbers. Yes, there are still close to six million people out of work, but even so we see signs of improvement. We think there will be net job creation in 2014 and it will be a good year for job creation." Spain's central bank said there were some hopeful signs in the job market. In the fourth quarter of 2013, the number of employees paying into the social security system rose 0.4 percent from the third, the first rise since early 2008, driven by the services sector and agricultural jobs. The Bank of Spain also believes the economic recovery is gaining traction. On Thursday the bank's experts said they think gross domestic product rose 0.3 percent on a quarterly basis between October and December 2013. The Madrid government is forecasting growth of 0.7 percent this year and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged households will soon feel the effects of the turnaround. This all comes as Spain formally exited a bank bailout programme .. under which it got a 41 billion euro loan from its European partners. Spotlight - Hedge funds further cripple Spain economy (P.2)
Hedge funds in Spain add to the financial crisis amid economic woes and the government's tough austerity measures. Grappling with a deep economic recession, Spain has adopted harsh austerity measures as part of attempts to deal with the dire situation. Spain has been witnessing daily protests in recent years since the country's economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008, taking millions of jobs with it. Spaniards continue street protests in the capital Madrid against the government's tough austerity measures.- published: 03 Mar 2014

Protest in Valencia, Spain June 19th 2011
On 19th of June 2011 the city of Valencia marched in a peaceful protest against the growing problems of a failing economy, high unemployment and a corrupt government.
The country of Spain has a documented 20% +- unemployment rate which is probably double considering undocumented/reported stats. Reading the signs of the protesters illustrates their frustrations. Translations coming soon.

24% DESEMPLEADOS
24% DESEMPLEADOS Translates into English 24% UNEMPLOYED.
I was invited to Zaragoza, Spain to paint at the 7th annual International art festival ASALTO (http://asaltoproduccion.es/ ) The organizers of ASALTO gave me a large selection of different sized walls to choose from for my painting. I chose this 40 metre (120 foot) long wall as I could execute my idea and concept perfectly. To make this piece even more situational and site specific I was able to get the help of local Spanish people who wanted to participate as the subjects in this piece. I invited them into my studio and had them pose as models as I traced their silhouettes on paper, that I later cut into a stencil which was painted on the wall.
Spain is the Eurozone’s 4th largest economy, however one in four people in Spain are unemployed. In August 2012, Spain's unemployment rate reached 24.4%, twice the euro-zone average. Even more shocking is the unemployment rate for those under 25 years old, is a staggering 53%! As of September 2012 there are 4,600,000 people without jobs in Spain.
An unemployment rate of 24% or 25% puts a country about where the U.S. was during the 1930s during the Great Depression. In September 2012 Spain breaks the world record and has the highest unemployment anywhere in the world!

Lisbon Calling: November 14th in Portugal
On November 14th 2012, thousands of people took to the streets of Portugal as part of a European wide general strike. Until recently, the International Monetary Fund held Portugal as an ideal example of the effectiveness of austerity policies, but today, its economy is heading in the same direction as Greece and Spain. This short documentary details the week of the November 14th strike in Lisbon and the events surrounding it.
