UDC Forum: The Consortium of Universities Washington Metropolitan Area (Part 1)
Welcome to another edition of UDC Forum with Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, assistant professor of history at the University of the District of Columbia. One of the new terms University administrations, trustees and regents are using more today is "ROI" or return on investment. All of the key stakeholders in higher education are asking for a more effective and efficient use of the resources being placed in higher education. The Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area is a powerful force for the advancement of higher education in and around the nation's capital. Comprised of twelve universities and two colleges, the Consortium provides 155,000 students with opportunities to benefit from the combined resources of its members. Consortium institutions educate students from all 50 states and more than 14,000 from around the world. Students and faculty from over 150 countries and all continents can be found here. Joining Dr. Jowers-Barber to talk more about the Consortium and the broader context of the state of higher education in the capitol area is Dr. John C. Cavanaugh became President and CEO of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area on March 1, 2013. Previously, Dr. Cavanaugh served as Chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education where was the chief executive officer of 14 comprehensive universities with a combined enrollment of nearly 120,000 students.- published: 29 Sep 2013

Retirement Community Is America's Fastest-Growing Metropolitan Area
A retirement community in Florida called 'The Villages' was recently declared the 'nation's fastest-growing metropolitan area'. A retirement community in Florida called 'The Villages' was recently declared the 'nation's fastest-growing metropolitan area'. According to figures released by the Census Bureau, from 2012 to 2013, the number of residents in the unincorporated, but evidently desired area, grew 5.2 percent. During the short time span of one year, 5,300 new people began calling 'The Villages' home. In July of 2013, the total population count reached exactly 107,056 in the development which is spread out in the differing counties of Lake, Marion and Sumter. The community earns the metro rank because it fits the population criteria of having at least 50 thousand residents. The most recent construction of housing units has stretched into Sumter County, which helped provide the city of Wildwood with a brand new town center. According to Mayor Ed Wolf, the new increase in residents has greatly added to the tax base. Wolf says store owners in the city are quite happy with the results, as they're seeing an increase in sales. Sumter County as a whole was ranked third in the fastest-growing counties category by the Census Bureau. The major contributing factor in the ranking is the expanding construction of 'The Villages'. The main attractions in the community include hotels, theaters and golf courses. Prices for homes in 'The Villages' range drastically from $100,000 to more than $1 million, and each household has to have at least one person age 55 or older.- published: 31 Mar 2014

Collision between two Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Trains
Metro Collision Animation Collision between two Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Trains Washington, District of Columbia June 22, 2009 DCA09MR007 Board Meeting July 27, 2010 Description/Disclaimer: This narrated animation displays the sequence of operation of Metro trains 112 and 214, before they collided near the Ft. Totten Metro Station on June 22, 2010. The animation begins as Train 112 leaves the Takoma Park Station, about two and a half minutes before the accident. When Train 214 reaches the faulty track circuit, it is not detected by the train control system. Except for two brief periods when the speed command goes briefly to zero, indicating intermittent function of the faulty circuit, the train control system transmits an errant speed command of 55 mph to Train 112 as Train 214 occupies the faulty track circuit. The animation shows the operator applying the emergency braking approximately three seconds after she has a full view of Train 214 and ends with a photograph of the accident. The top of the screen shows an overhead view of the two accident trains. The blue arrow represents Train 112 and the orange arrow represents Train 214. The yellow dots on the track separate each set of track circuit segments. The middle section of the screen shows the elapsed time, the speed commands issued to each train by the train control system, and the actual speeds of each train. The bottom of the screen depicts a three--dimensional view riding along with the striking train, up to the point that it collided with the stopped train. This accident reconstruction was based on information obtained from the Train 214 event recorders. The motion of Train 112 was derived from a simulation based on speed commands that the train received from the signal system, the design characteristics of the metro trains, and other evidence. The accident occurred on track owned and maintained by WMATA, and approximately 1 1/4 miles of track are shown in the animation. The accident occurred in daylight conditions; weather and visibility at the time of the accident are not shown.- published: 27 Nov 2013
